MONTHLY CHAPTER REPORT | This report can be viewed at the UAP Corporate Website www.united-architects.org Page 4 of 17 I have been mentioning some trivia about Badminton in the previous chapter monthly reports and now since we hailed as one of the Champion in Billiards (8ball) (and we still got the first place guys in Badminton too!), I would like to share some trivia about…Billiards Trivia: Billiard is also called Cue sports; it’s a game with various styles, although you have to hit the balls using a stick, all cue sports are generally regarded to have evolved into indoor games from outdoor stick-and-ball lawn games (retroactively termed ground billiards), and as such to be related to the historical games jeu de mail and palle-malle, and modern trucco, croquet and golf, and more distantly to the stickless bocce and bowls. The word "billiard" may have evolved from the French word billart or billette, meaning "stick", in reference to the mace, an implement similar to a golf club, which was the forerunner to the modern cue; the term's origin may have also been from French bille, meaning "ball".The modern term "cue sports" can be used to encompass the ancestral mace games, and even the modern cueless variants, such as finger billiards, for historical reasons. "Cue" itself came from queue, the French word for a tail. This refers to the early practice of using the tail of the mace to strike the ball when it lay against a rail cushion . MONTHLY CHAPTER REPORT | This report can be viewed at the UAP Corporate Website www.united-architects.org Page 5 of 17 It’s more interesting to see this attendance sheet signed by some inactive and semi-active members who joined, participated and supported the said activity. I just hope to see them more often and be active also in attending the GMM and incoming projects that the chapter will be doing for the next succeeding months. Guess what?, for the first time, our basketball team scored higher that our opponent hurray!!...it was a very exciting game that led to overtime. Apparently we didn’t win that game but we enjoyed the game a lot as if we are the champion!! . The chapter member badminton players invited colleagues and friends to join them in one badminton day practice at JCAS Sports Center. They just love the sport and the camaraderie and warm welcome from the Del Pilar architects. TRIVIA: Camaraderie is a noun which means mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time together. “It is an absolute human certainty that no one can know his own beauty or perceive a sense of his own worth until it has been reflected back to him in the mirror of another loving, caring human being.” MONTHLY CHAPTER REPORT | This report can be viewed at the UAP Corporate Website www.united-architects.org Page 7 of 17 After playing the very tiring and fat burning sport, the group opted to savour the dinner prepared by the Chapter members…what else to partake…our very own favorite LECHON!. • History and Rules for Medieval Ground and Table Billiards by THL Aurddeilen-Ap-Robet
Original Published October 2013; Updated March 2017 History and Rules for Medieval Ground and Table Billiards by THL Aurddeilen-ap-Robet A Brief History of the Game The Modern game of Billiards (originally called “Port and King”) is generally regarded to have evolved into an indoor game from outdoor stick-and-ball lawn games such as Jeu de mail, Paille-maille, Trucco, Croquet, Golf, and the stick-less game of Bocce. The first literary mention of a form of the word "billiards" appears in Edmund Spenser's Mother Hubberd's Tale in 1591, where he speaks of "all thriftless games that may be found ... with dice, with cards, with billiards". The word "billiard" may have evolved from the French word billart or billette, meaning "stick", in reference to the mace, an implement similar to a golf club. The term billiard may have also originated from the French word bille, meaning "ball". A form of billiards was played outdoors in the 1340s, and was reminiscent of croquet in that it used hoops and pins. King Louis XI of France had the first known indoor billiard table constructed in the 15th Century. Louis XIV further refined and popularized the game, and it swiftly spread amongst the French nobility. While the game had long been played on the ground, this version appears to have died out in the 17th century, in favor of croquet, golf, and various bowling games.
