World Naked Gardening Day (commentary by Melissa Martin Ph.D)

Yes, it’s a thing. The first Saturday of May brings along a rather bizarre awareness day. And just how do you celebrate World Naked Gardening Day? Plant peppers and tomatoes in your birthday suit. Hoe dirt in the nude. Trim trees au naturel. Ouch! Avoid poison ivy. Itch!

It’s the Sixteenth Annual World Naked Gardening Day in 2020. Over a decade of bonding in the buff with bare buns. World Naked Gardening Day was founded in 2005 by Mark Story of .

World Naked Gardening Day is even featured in , the free encyclopedia. I guess that makes it official. WNGD is endorsed by , Clothes Free International and American Association for Nude .

Moreover, our needs to move toward a healthy sense of both body acceptance and our relation to the natural environment. Why Do Online Nudist Communities Never Work? Part One

The internet was responsible for a big boost in nudism. You could search the internet for clubs and , instead of sneaking an ashamed look at the back pages of naturist magazines. You could safely connect with other nudists without revealing your name or face. Nudists have al- ways been relegated to the fringes of society, but on the internet, everyone is on the fringe.

However, it’s remarkable that nudist communities don’t seem to be very successful, as a rule. There is no single nudist community with a large membership that has stuck around for more than a few years. Read more

Why Do Online Nudist Communities Never Work? (Part Two)

In my recent post, I pointed out that nudist communities don’t usually work online. I’ve never run an online nudist community before (although I do moderate one), although I’ve been a member of many of them.

But I do perceive some fundamental problems with nudist communities - not with any particular nudist communities themselves, but with the concept of nudist communities in general. And these problems mean that no nudist community, at least with the typical membership- participation , can really succeed.

On the Internet, No One Knows...

The biggest problem, and this goes back to my previous piece on the subject, is authenticity. It’s like the New Yorker comic from back in the late 90s: on the internet, no one knows whether you’re really a nudist. Authenticity is really difficult to verify. And unfortunately there are many 3 nudists on the internet who are not who they say they are. Read more One Man's Year As A Nudist

Most people wouldn't feel comfortable removing all their clothes in public, but for some it's a way of life. American writer Mark Haskell Smith overcame his nerves and spent a year immersing himself in the world of nudism.

"If you're at the airport, you don't make jokes about bombs. When you're with nudists you don't make jokes about . And God forbid, don't get an erection - you will probably be asked to leave," says Haskell Smith.

These are just two of things he learned as he visited naturist resorts around the world.

His first stop was the Desert Sun in Palm Springs, California. "I was terrified. I was there, awkward and anxious in my room, putting on layer after layer of sunblock, until finally, when I walked outside, I was a beacon of light and highly reflective. There are all these people around the pool and they all look at me and then they wince and cover their faces.

"I was really insulted, I thought, 'Hey wait, I'm 20 years younger than all of you people,' and then I looked down… and I got it, I was like, 'Oh dear.'"

After getting over his sunblock faux pas, he went to several nudist resorts in Europe. Cap d'Agde in the south of is one of the best-known. Water Volleyball Highlights Looks Like I’m Not The Only One. Another weekend staring at the walls Wishing I was playing Water Volleyball

The news is still full of trends In the past two weeks I have seen a lot of bodies. Bodies of water and human bodies. Keeping me away from our friends So many different rivers, lakes and that I find it hard to believe I haven’t been on the Things will get better over time road for months and months. Not quite as many naked bodies but still quite a few for only two Right now, I have run out of words to weeks. In our day to day lives we don’t often see naked people except for our sexual partners. In rhyme the last fourteen days I’ve seen eleven. With each one I’ve had a totally platonic time, nothing weird or untoward. Fancy that aye!? Eleven different, and yet all basically the same, bodies. Each one with its own qualities, quirks, strengths and weaknesses. Each one naked and free not worry- ing about what the others around are thinking of it. They have been young and old ranging from 20s to 70s and everything in between. Ranging from life long naturists to first time skinny dip- pers, but not one of them has told me they find it weird or uncomfortable. Looks like peo- ple do enjoy being naked just like me!

The bodies of water I have seen and dipped in have been some of the most beautifully clear waters I have ever seen in my life. This country should win some kind of award for the most swimmable country on earth. Almost every corner that I turn there is a new wonderland of free- dom, seclusion and stunning beauty to be played in. On the east coast I’ve walked for hours on wild beaches where my only companions are seals. In marvelous Marlborough I’ve jumped into river after river of the bluest blues. In Nelson lakes I’ve showered under the spray of a waterfall and jumped off jetty's. Now, in Abel Tasman I am attempting to escape the crowds and find some beach seclusion.

I am most certainly in a frenzy on this trip, darting from place to place. I arrive at one amazing swimming hole, I swim, I take some photos, I write a little, then I must move on to explore the next. So many places to go, so little time! Amongst all the beauty and seclusion there has also been plenty of wild goose chases. Times I have driven for what seems like an eternity down wind- ing gravel roads, then scrambled through bushes, scratching my legs on brambles. Only to find a rough, rocky river flowing at such a speed that if I were to jump in, I’d be swept off and never seen again. Or times when I have arrived at a place of incredible natural beauty, strolled around a 4 little, Read more About Us

As far as I can tell, there are two reasons to blog, both legitimate, but depending on who you are and where you are in life, maybe not of equal weight. 1) You blog to get your thoughts out into print. A sort of catharsis. An exercise to see if you can formulate your thoughts into a coherent sentence. If not, maybe your thoughts were actually… nothing. (Brian, Family Guy, c.2012).

Or 2) You actually have this delusional perception that maybe your thoughts, once committed to cyberspace, might actually sway the masses, or maybe even a few people on the fence, to con- sider for a moment the absurdity of the textile industry and how the entire human race has somehow decided that certain anatomical parts are dangerous, while others are simply… func- tional. A may get the credit for perpetuating the human species, but when I imagine life without elbows or opposable thumbs, I get pretty sad!

To be sure, the airing of one’s thoughts in a public forum is cathartic, especially when it’s some- thing you believe in, like naturism, for example! While some people can get a bit evangelical about this whole thing, I would be pretty happy if the “whole thing” wasn’t actually a thing. A nudist is someone who doesn’t think people should feel a sense of shame about being naked or seeing others naked!

Who’s Afraid of the Female Nude?

Male wonder whether they can work with the female form, while the world questions what their intentions were in the first place. By Michael Slenske

The western art canon is in no small part a parade of famous female nudes, from Praxite- les’s of Knidos from the fourth century B.C. to Manet’s 19th-century prostitutes (notably the recumbent, unamused Olympia) to John Currin’s -meets-Fragonard women — and almost all of them have been made by white male artists. Of course, as art historian Linda Nochlin famously observed, it was difficult for women to paint nudes when historically they weren’t even allowed to attend figure- classes because of the naked people necessarily present.

While feminist art critics have for decades pointed out the shortcomings of the “male gaze,” the post-#MeToo reckoning with the art world’s systemic sexism, its finger-on-the-scale prefer- ence for male genius, has given that critique a newly powerful force. And the question of the moment has become: Is it still an artistically justifiable pursuit for a man to paint a naked wom- an?

To answer this question, I reached out to a number of prominent male artists known for doing just that (as well as for nude men). But most of them — including Currin, Carroll Dun- ham, Jeff Koons, and the young Mexican-American painter Alex Becerra (some of whose nudes are drawn from escort ads) — declined to talk about their work’s relationship to the current social climate. Presumably, they worried about unintentionally saying the wrong thing that would then echo endlessly across social media, damaging their reputations. For emerging artists, there is the fear of a possibly career-derailing gestalt fail. “I’ve been in conversations with other [male artists], and they were just like, ‘I quit working with the figure. I’m only doing abstract work, because I don’t want to touch it,’ ” says Marty Schnapf while walking me through his recent solo show “Fissures in the Fold” at Wilding Cran Gallery in Los Angeles. He thinks we could be living through “a new Victorian age” — or at least that’s his explanation for the mixed responses he’s received for his gender-confusing neo-Cubist nudes, Read more 7 Mark Your Calendars Are Exhibitionism and Nudism the Same Thing? Not at All! Many people outside the nudist lifestyle consider a nudist and an exhibitionist to be very much the same thing. It is true that both are without clothes, but that is the only similarity between them.

In fact, there are many differences between nudists and exhibitionists. The most important dis- tinction that helps differentiate them, though, is their intent. Unfortunately, the nudity compo- nent has led textiles to assume that nudism and exhibitionism are the same, giving nudism a very negative connotation.

How Do We Define “Nudist”?

In its purest form, nudism is the preference to be “open and free” with oneself, and encounter the liberation and exhilaration that results from not wearing the cloaks that society, which can come across as very shallow at times, forces us to wear.

It is about being:

“Open” - allowing others to view your genuine true self and not shielding yourself with artificial facades that mask who you honestly and genuinely are.

"Free" - because it feels like you are as free as a bird flying far above the horizon when you shed the shell of clothes that bind and restrict your body.

Hence, “Open and free”.

If you have found for yourself how pleasurable and exhilarating nudity is, you already appreciate how freeing it feels. If you feel fantastic while not paying attention to what others perceive, you are a nudist without dispute. Read more
