From the Thomistic Approach to the Franciscans Giovanni Patriarca1 Recibido: 01/09/2020 / Aceptado: 27/02/2021 Abstract. This essay provides a general overview of the development of economic theories in 13th and 14th centuries in the light of the latest studies and offers new perspectives for future investigations. Scholasticism is a milestone in the history of Western philosophy as well as its contribution to scientific method and innovation. At the end of the Middle Ages, the ideal of shared norms and values clashes with the tensions of commercial transformation. In this historical framework – characterized not only by an unprecedented international trade and new financial institutions but also by a sort of proto-empiricism – the philosophical speculation tries to find a unitary “way of knowledge” between the legitimacy of individual interests and the primacy of general principles. This interdisciplinary effort is based on the innovative interpretation of theology, (natural) philosophy, Roman and Canon law such as local customary rules applied to the emergent economic issues. Este ensayo ofrece una visión general del desarrollo de las teorías económicas en los siglos XIII y XIV a la luz de los últimos estudios y ofrece nuevas perspectivas para futuras investigaciones. La escolástica, así como su contribución al método científico y la innovación, es un hito en la historia de la filosofía occidental. A finales de la Edad Media, el ideal de normas y valores compartidos choca con las tensiones de la transformación comercial. En este marco histórico, caracterizado no sólo por un comercio internacional sin precedentes y nuevas instituciones financieras, sino también por una especie de proto-empirismo, la especulación filosófica trata de encontrar un “camino del conocimiento” unitario entre la legitimidad de los intereses individuales y la primacía de principios generales. Este esfuerzo interdisciplinario se basa en la interpretación innovadora de la teología, la filosofía (natural) y el derecho romano y canónico, así como las reglas consuetudinarias locales aplicadas a los problemas económicos emergentes. According to Lionel Robbins’ classic definition, “Economics is the science which studies human behavior as a relationship between ends and scarce means that have alternate uses.” Yet most modern economists assume that economic choice involves only the means and not to the ends of human action. The reason seems to be that most modern economists are ignorant of the history of their own discipline before Adam Smith or Jeremy Bentham. Leading economists like Gary Becker attempt to explain all human behavior, including love and hate, as a maximization of “utility.” But historically and logically, an adequate description of economic choice has always required both a ranking of persons as ends and a ranking of scarce goods as means. What is missing from modern economics is an adequate description of the ranking of persons as ends. This is reflected in the absence of a satisfactory microeconomic explanation (for example, within the household) as to how goods are distributed to their final users, and in an overemphasis at the political level on an “individualistic social welfare function,” by which policymakers are purported to add up the preferences of a society of selfish individuals and determine all distribution from the government downwards, as if the nation or the world were one large household. As this “hole” in economic theory is recognized, an army of “neo-scholastic” economists will find full employment for the first few decades of the 21st Century, busily rewriting the Utilitarian “economic approach to human behavior” that dominated the last three decades of the 20th Century.

McCarthy In this essay, we will examine the influence of natural law theory on the early and later writings of Karl Marx in order to show the continuity between his nineteenth-century critical social theory and the classical and medieval tradi- tions. In his 1926 work, Religion and the Rise of Capitalism, Richard Tawney wrote in a relatively obscure and largely forgotten comment that Marx was the “last of the Schoolmen,”1 that is, last of the medieval natural law theorists fol- lowing in the footsteps from the twelfth to the fourteenth century of Pierre 1 Richard Tawney, Religion and the Rise of Capitalism (London: J. Murray, 1927). By character- izing Marx as the “last of the Schoolmen,” Tawney was referring to Thomas Aquinas’ labor theory of value and the continuity of traditions between Marx and neo-Aristotelian medieval Scholasticism. Tawney argued that Marx was the end of a long tradition of theorists that included the 13th-century theologian Thomas Aquinas, the 14th-century scholastic Henry of Langenstein, and the 16th-century Protestant reformer Martin Luther who made the point that the appropriate and “reasonable remuneration” of wages for a worker or merchant should be based on their labor and contribution to the common good. “The medieval theorist condemned as a sin precisely that effort to achieve a continuous and unlimited increase in material wealth which modern societies applaud as a quality, and the vices for which he reserved his most merciless denunciations were the more refined and subtle of the economic virtues” (pp.

    CMS MEMORY IN THE MIDDLE AGES APPROACHES FROM SOUTHWESTERN EUROPE Memory was vital to the functioning of the medieval world. People in medieval societies shared an identity based on commonly held memo- MEMORY IN THE MIDDLE AGES THE MIDDLE IN MEMORY ries. Religions, rulers, and even cities and nations justifi ed their exis- tence and their status through stories that guaranteed their deep and unbroken historical roots. The studies in this interdisciplinary collec- tion explore how manifestations of memory can be used by historians as a prism through which to illuminate European medieval thought and value systems.The contributors have drawn a link between memory and medieval science, management of power and remembrance of the dead ancestors through examples from southern Europe as a means and Studies CARMEN Monographs of enriching and complicating our study of the Middle Ages; this is a region with a large amount of documentation but which to date has not been widely studied. Finally, the contributors have researched the role of memory as a means to sustain identity and ideology from the past to the present. This book has two companion volumes, dealing with ideology and identity as part of a larger project that seeks to map and interrogate the signifi cance of all three concepts in the Middle Ages in the West. CARMEN Monographs and Studies seeks to explore the movements of people, ideas, religions and objects in the medieval period.   • Ruskin and Political Economy
    Donald Winch Ruskin and Political Economy Since I was educated originally as an economist, and have spent a number of years writing the history of what Ruskin came to regard as ‘the most cretinous, speechless, paralysing plague that has yet touched the brains of mankind’, you will sense my discomfort in speaking about his relationship with political economy on this celebratory occasion, surrounded by a distinguished gathering of Ruskinians.1 What I have to say, however, depends as much on my longer second occupation as a practitioner of intellectual history as it does on my fading knowledge of economists’ ways of thinking. Intellectual history requires a measure of generosity towards past thinkers, even an enjoyment of their quiddities. But approaching Ruskin’s views on political economy without prejudice requires an effort. For example, I cannot recognise the author of the Wealth of Nations, still less the author of the Theory of Moral Sentiments, in Ruskin’s description of Adam Smith as that ‘half-bred and half-witted Scotchman’ who had taught the ‘deliberate blasphemy’ that ‘thou shalt hate the Lord thy God, damn His laws, and covet thy neighbour’s goods’.2 Nor can I recognise John Stuart Mill in the hypercritical remarks that pepper Ruskin’s writings and correspondence. Supposing it to be true that Mill genuinely was ‘a poor cretinous wretch’ whose opinions on political economy were as false as Ruskin believed them to be, I still cannot believe that Mill was literally ‘the root of nearly all immediate evil among us in England’? 3 No doubt some of these pronouncements can be excused as rhetoric – in a post-modern world most things can.
