These works were created during the School’s first hundred years from 1861 on North Terrace to the early 1960s when the school was on the brink of moving to its Stanley Street North Adelaide campus in July 1963. In particular, the event forms part of the broader South Australian School of Art History Project and focuses on works that are held among the Art Gallery of South Australia’s magnificent collection of Australian prints, drawings and photographs. A celebration of life, art and exhibition This year Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest celebrates 75 years of art practice and exhibition on this site. In 1942, Gerald Lewers purchased this property to use as an occasional residence while working nearby as manager of quarrying company Farley and Lewers. A decade later, the property became the family home of Gerald and Margo Lewers and their two daughters, Darani and Tanya. It was here the family pursued their individual practices as artists and welcomed many Sydney artists, architects, writers and intellectuals. At this site in Western Sydney, modernist thinking and art practice was nurtured and flourished. Upon the passing of Margo Lewers in 1978, the daughters of Margo and Gerald Lewers sought to honour their mother’s wish that the house and garden at Emu Plains be gifted to the people of Penrith along with artworks which today form the basis of the Gallery’s collection. Received by Penrith City Council in 1980, the Neville Wran led state government supported the gift with additional funds to create a purpose built gallery on site. Opened in 1981, the gallery supports a seasonal exhibition, education and public program. Len Kader, my grandfather, was a member of this battalion and often spoke of the trials and tribulations of going to war. After his 1977 passing due to war wounds he received at El Alamein, I inherited photographs and memorabilia which inspired my passion for this historical event. Over the years, I have spoken to, and interviewed many of the original battalion veterans and relatives. These encounters have shown me a relaxed and funny side to some of the antics the Aussies got up to, while growing a respect for the hardships they dealt with. It has been an amazing journey for me. I have realised these were ordinary men, under extraordinary circumstances, who not only had a devotion to their country, but a devotion to each other. Their various ages and backgrounds did not matter as they saw each other as brothers. To me, it is very important that this amazing and accurate recollection of the 2/48th Battalion be republished for the 70th anniversary of the El Alamein battles. In 1989, Roger Butler, the then President of the Print Council, and Curator of Australian Prints at the National Gallery of Australia invited Grahame King to speak at the First Australian Print Symposium. His presentation concerned the early history of the Print Council. In later discussions with Roger Butler he offered his papers relating to the formation and running of the Print Council to the National Gallery of Australia. This small collection includes papers that document Grahame King’s activities with the PCA, the adult education classes he taught and lectures he gave for university courses. The majority of documents comprising this collection are administrative and relate to the PCA; other material includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, financial records and copies of published articles. The collection has been described to item level.
