Diana M. Marangu – MBChB, MMed, MPH, MPhil, PhD July 2019 1) PERSONAL INFORMATION Name Diana Mwendwa Marangu OrcID http://orcid.org/0000-0003-3895-2210 Google Scholar https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=ReQlaT4AAAAJ&hl=en Address P. O. Box 55554-00200, Nairobi, Kenya Date of birth January 29, 1983 Phone +254 721 28 28 15 E-mail [email protected] Nationality Kenyan 2) PERSONAL STATEMENT I am passionate about improving respiratory health in children, nationally, regionally and globally. While pursuing an MPH in Global Health at the University of Washington, my colleague Dr. Nuttada Panpradist from Bioengineering and I conceptualized a point-of-care diagnostic for pulmonary TB (PTB) from urine samples. We convinced our supervisors that this was important and the collaborative effort resulted in a Global WACH/Coulter Foundation pilot grant award. My MPH thesis, a meta-analysis on the diagnostic accuracy of nucleic acid amplification tests in urine for PTB formed the literature review for this project, under the mentorship of Professors Grace John-Stewart and Beth Devine. Thereafter I embarked on a PhD in Tropical and Infectious Diseases and conducted research to optimize TB contact investigation in Nairobi (TB-Kwisha study) under the supervision of Professors Walter Jaoko, Elizabeth Obimbo, Deepa Rao, Joseph Babigumira and Grace John-Stewart. I then commenced my paediatric pulmonology training at Red Cross Children’s Hospital/University of Cape Town. During this fellowship, I undertook research on exogenous lipoid pneumonia (ELP) in African children. I reported the first case series on paediatric ELP in Africa, performed a systematic review to highlight the importance of recognizing this interstitial lung disease in children, and also participated in the development of an ELP preventive strategy in the Western Cape of South Africa, under the mentorship of Dr. Marco Zampoli, Dr. Aneesa Vanker, and Professors Diane Gray and Heather Zar. I have recently returned home to work with my fellow colleagues and the community to further optimize respiratory health, research and education in Kenya. 3) EDUCATION 14/12/2018 MPhil Paediatric Pulmonology, University of Cape Town, South Africa 25/10/2018 Certificate Paediatric Pulmonology (board certified by the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa) 14/09/2018 PhD Tropical and Infectious Diseases, University of Nairobi, Kenya 22/08/2014 MPH, University of Washington, Seattle, USA 07/12/2012 MMed Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Nairobi, Kenya 07/12/2007 Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB), University of Nairobi, Kenya 4) POSITIONS AND EMPLOYMENT Since 2018 Paediatric Pulmonologist, Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Nairobi, Kenya 2016-2018 Paediatric Pulmonology Fellow, Department of Paediatrics, University of Cape Town, South Africa Since 2015 Lecturer, Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Nairobi, Kenya 2014 Volunteer Intern, TB Control Program, Public Health Seattle and King County, Seattle, USA 2013-2018 Senior Fellow Trainee, International AIDS Research and Training Program, University of Washington, USA 2012-2015 Tutorial Fellow, Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Nairobi, Kenya Since 2012 Paediatrician, Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Nairobi, Kenya 2009-2012 Paediatrics Registrar, Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Nairobi, Kenya 2009 Senior House Officer, Department of Paediatrics, Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi, Kenya 2008 Medical Officer Intern, Department of Paediatrics, Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi, Kenya 5) INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Mentoring and teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Nairobi.
