Gigi’s “Elizabeth A. “Mary Lea 1793” from the Design Studios of Hands Across the Sea Samplers

It is with great pleasure that I announce that this stunning sampler reproduction, “Mary Lea 1793,” from The Design Studios of Hands Across the Sea Samplers, will be our 2017 Attic Stitch-Along. Mary embroidered this exquisite sampler when she was only 11 years old ~ the model shown here was beautifully executed by Jacqueline Morris. The model, left, will be on display at The Attic throughout 2017. At 373 x 445, it’s a sizable project, very doable in a year’s time. The model is stitched on Lakeside’s Vintage Meadow Rue with Au Ver A Soie’s Soie d’Alger. The overdyed silk conversion is shown on the next page.

Mary Lea’s sampler is bordered with lilies and carnations, is filled with wonderful motifs, a plethora of birds as well as several butterflies and squirrels, a sweet cat and dog on either side of the manor house. I love the touches of blue throughout the sampler, the two apple trees and other trees, and the tulips and other flowers. The sampler is cross stitch over two, , with the verse and other words cross stitch over one. The verse: Great God with Wonder and with Praise Not all the Books on Earth beside On all thy Works I look Such heavenly Wonders tell But still thy Wisdom Power and Grace Then let me love my Bible more Shine brightest in thy Book And take a fresh Delight Here would I learn how Christ had dyed By Day to read these Wonders o’er The Attic, Mesa, AZ Toll-Free: 1.888.94-ATTIC (1.888.942.8842) www.atticneedlework.com

I needed to scale it down - so I contacted Mr Miller from Miller Carpentry Creations and asked him to take a look at the piece. He also was intrigued by the mechanics and shape of the piece. He asked me what size I would roughly need and I said abut 7 x 8 and cherry, please. Time passed and one day a superbly mini version arrived at my home. I could not wait to start working and creating times that would showcase this beautiful handcrafted desk. When thinking/dreaming of stitches and how bands of stitches flow into samplers, Jane Austen's use of words that weave into brilliant tapestry of stories come to mind. The Swan’s Bower with Betsy Morgan/Willing Hands

The theme this time around is "swans" - swan eggs, baby swans, adolescent swans, full grown swans. The title of the design is The Swan's Bower and the original inspiration came from a motif on an 1813 English Sampler which is in Betsy’s collection. Another inspiration was a motif on a sampler that Betsy saw in a museum in Timaru, New Zealand last year.

The format for this etui comes from an antique needlebook that she bought at Beating Around the Bush in Australia last year. The original is burgundy colored velvet and is rather worn and ugly, but the construction of it fascinated her and she thought that she could take the format and run with it. The original was commercially made in England in the early 1900's

Betsy’s version is much larger and has pockets inside, made from the yellow silk Dupioni lining fabric. There are 3 "smalls" to tuck into the pocket - a scissor holder and fob and a floss holder. Also included is a swan beeswax thread waxer and a tiny enameled swan charm. The center of the inside of the book Betsy has been stitching for over 50 years, beginning with stamped has an attached needle/pin holder which has a thick piece of yellow wool felt Erica Wilson Crewel kits when she was a child. “Maria Katarin’s Stitching Reticule” is a Mexican stitcher's purse. It is named for Betsy’s adopted daughter, Caitie, who is part Mexican. The various motifs and techniques used in this purse were inspired by an 1844 sampler from Pachuca, Mexico which is in her collection.

When folded closed, the reticule measures 4 x 8 inches. It is stitched on light mocha Belfast linen using Gloriana silk flosses and is lined in olive silk Dupioni. Inside there are 3 small pockets for holding your small needlework tools including two of the smalls in this design - a scissor fob and a thread winder. The reticule also includes a 5-inch stitched ruler.

Stitches include: Aztec, eyelet, diagonal pattern , pulled four-sided, long-arm cross, diagonal satin, Mexican klosters, satin, rice, upright cross, cross over one and cross over two.

. . . With Thy Needle & Thread

SUMMER SCHOOLHOUSE, Lessons in Abecedarian, the 4-part series from Brenda Gervais/With thy Needle & Thread is coming in 4 installments, the first one projected for late June. Brenda says this mystery series will consist of 4 lessons/4 separate charts, with a total of 6 projects. The chart ship dates are as follows: Lesson #1, June 20th, and the next 3 lessons on the 20th of each subsequent month. Charts will retail for $12 each. The floss palette consists of 15 beautiful shades of hand-dyed fibers, 5 each from Weeks, Gentle Arts, and Classic Colorworks. (Cottons show, below left, at the bottom.). And as is the custom at The Attic, we are also offering a conversion to hand-dyed silks. The projects all coordinate and are designed to be placed together for a striking vignette of tiny handwork, each done over 1 on 28c fabric. The required fabric for all 4 lessons is a 9" x 55" piece.
