EMILIO NAVAIRA, 1962-2016 Tejano music legend Emilio Navaira dies at 53 May 16, 2016: Tejano Superstar Emilio Navaira, who scored numerous crossover hits, died Monday evening at his home in New Braunfels TX. He was 53. He is believed to have died from natural causes. Oscar de la Rosa, lead vocalist for Tejano group La Mafia, called Navaira “my friend and companion, one of the greats in our genre.” According to the San Antonio Express-News, Navaira was the last Tejano act to play Rodeo Houston in 2007 for a crowd of more than 69,000 fans. He was the lead singer for David Lee Garza y los Musicales (1984-1988), followed by forming his own band with his brother Raúl—a band called Rio. As shown in the 1992 La Prensa photo, the hermanos were known for their onstage antics, most notably a dance move known as the “Emilio Shuffle.” R.I.P. Emilio!
