To find evidence for this ideal and how it was regarded at the time, in this study a survey is made of woolworking references in the contemporary Augustan poets Vergil, Tibullus, Propertius and Ovid. Other extant versions of the Lucretia legend do not mention woolworking; Livy appears to have added Lucretia’s devotion to wool, a tradition in keeping with Augustan propaganda. -

Casey Roth Dionysiac Art and Pastoral Escapism The pastoral lifestyle was appealing to many people in the Hellenistic and Roman world, as it provided an escape from the stresses of the city.1 This longing to flee the materialistic urban centers was reflected in art and literature, in which Dionysiac figures, such as satyrs or even herdsmen, were represented and described in this idealized environment and provided viewers with a sense of being carefree. Dionysiac elements in art and literature represented this escape from the chaotic city, overcoming boundaries to allow one to welcome a utopia.2 Not only were boundaries overcome in both a worldly and geographic sense, but also identity was challenged. As a result of escaping the city through pastoralism, one could abandon their identity as a civilian for an existence defined by pastoral bliss.3 Pastoralism was associated with an idyllic landscape and can act as an escape from reality. -

Ambivalent States: Anglo-American Expatriates
AMBIVALENT STATES: ANGLO-AMERICAN EXPATRIATES IN ITALY FROM 1848 TO 1892 by MOLLIE ELIZABETH BARNES (Under the Direction of Tricia Lootens) ABSTRACT This dissertation studies Anglo-American expatriates who address, or pointedly don’t address, the Risorgimento and the Unification of Italy. I argue that the ambivalence writers associate with Italy is important, not just because it upends allegiances normally understood as simply republican or as simply anti-republican, but also because it challenges the ways we read the mood of the period and the ways we define emerging nation-states. I frame the dissertation with Margaret Fuller, who argues that this mid-century moment forced her to reconcile seemingly incompatible allegiances to “Art” and to the “the state of the race” or “the state of the people.” Anglo-American Italophiles were, in fact, often overwhelmed by ambivalence in the wake of the mid-century revolutions; and expatriate writers often realized allegiances to politics and to aesthetics, to republicans and to anti-republicans. I trace Anglo-American expatriates in three cities (Rome, Florence, and Venice) and across two generations (1848–1870 and 1871–1892), and I divide the dissertation into three diptychs: chapters one and two are about Rome; chapters three and four are about Florence; and chapters five and six are about Venice. The first half of each diptych shows how mid-century writers weren’t defined by unequivocal republicanism or unequivocal anti-republicanism but by a much more elusive disposition: politicoaesthetic ambivalence. I argue that this ambivalence intensifies in the years just following the unification of the peninsula. -

This thesis advances the name of Raphael Santi, the High Renaissance artist, to be included among the famous and highly esteemed Humanists of the Renaissance period. While the artistic creativity of the Renaissance is widely recognized, the creators have traditionally been viewed as mere craftsmen. In the case of Raphael Santi, his skills as a painter have proven to be a timeless medium for the immortalizing of the elevated thinking and turbulent challenges of the time period. His interests outside of painting, including archaeology and architecture, also offer strong testimony of his Humanist background and pursuits.
