We would not have been able to do this without the help of the Trust and are truly grateful. Hosting the event also gave us something exciting to look forward to and gave encouragement to the life of our church. The Montgomery Trust exists to bring the insights of renowned academic and scientific minds to anyone seeking to understand faith more deeply. It was established thanks to a bequest from Sir Alexander Cecil Montgomery of Albury, Surrey – a Baronet who lived from 1859 until 1939. He was passionate about communicating modern Bible scholarship, with an emphasis on Christian apologetics, to everyone. His will stipulated that the Trust is: “ ...for the purpose of promoting lectures in explanation and defence of the Christian Religion and with a view to removing difficulties widely felt in the way of faith in God and to demonstrate the reasonableness of theistic faith.” – Paragraph 7 from the Will of Sir Alexander Cecil Montgomery, 1937 In addition, Sir Alex expressed a preference for the lecturers ‘being proficient in some branch of science or scholarship and preferably lay, with a gift for popular exposition’. There are now over 30 Montgomery Trust Lecturers, who each offer up to 3 lecture titles MONTGOMERY MONTGOMERY TRUST LECTURERS and themes to choose from. • Dean's Welcome
Dean’s Welcome Dear Supporters and Friends of St Paul’s, Again, we have experienced an action- packed year so far. This is a fine testament both to the many clergy, staff and volunteers who organise services and events, but also to the active visitors and supporters whose enthusiasm for St Paul’s quite clearly knows no bounds. For all this, we are extremely grateful. As we begin the run up to Christmas, and then beyond into 2012 with HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, we can look back on many 2011 highlights described or shown in this “Dome” – the memorable 300th anniversary service in June for a capacity congregation of the current staff and supporters of the cathedral, the Royal Gala Concert in March which raised £150,000 for the cathedral, and much, much more. Over and above these, the constant flow of visitors, the regular cycle of services, the opportunities to engage The Right Reverend Graeme Knowles Dean, St Paul’s Cathedral with schoolchildren perhaps visiting for their very first time, or with our corporate neighbours holding a dinner in the Crypt: all these show how vibrant and relevant the cathedral continues to be to the City, the national and the international communities. • St Paul's Cathedral Annual Report 2011
Annual Report 2011 MISSION STATEMENT St Paul’s Cathedral stands as a symbol and focus of the presence of God in the world and is served by a community of people who work and worship in this place. Founded in 604, we continue to share in the ministry of the Bishop and Diocese of London and in the wider mission of the church throughout the world. In the 21st century we present a place of refreshment and encounter in which church, city and nation meet to celebrate a common history and discern the Kingdom of God within the new horizons of an international metropolis. Using our diverse skills we cherish for future generations the inheritance of worship, scholarship, teaching, music making, art and architectural craft. Valuing this inheritance we are committed to the cultural diversity, equal opportunities and personal development of all who work here. We welcome all who visit this House of God. The resignation of Dean Knowles late in 2011 was the cause of great sadness and regret amongst those who worship at, work for and support St Paul’s Cathedral. Graeme Knowles achieved a great deal in his four years as Dean of St Paul’s. He contributed to so many areas of the Cathedral’s life, notably, its worship, music and liturgy, its support to the Diocese of London and to the Cathedral’s sound financial management. The Chapter LITURGY AND MUSIC REPORT The Reverend Canon Michael Hampel | Precentor he Cathedral has continued to Donald Hunt, now Assistant Organist at T host services of national, diocesan St Mary Magdalene, Newark-on-Trent, and local significance throughout 2011, and the appointment of Charles Williams including the Cathedral’s own 300th as Dean’s Virger.
