With unprecedented access to a top athlete, the film tracks all the elements that make up McCoy's life. We see him in action at racecourses across the UK and Ireland. We are with him at the Cheltenham Festival and Aintree. We see him struggling with injury at home, setting himself new targets and grappling with the decision whether to retire or not. We track the successful early part of the season, when AP harbours the outrageous idea of riding 300 winners in a season. We see the shattering effect of injury on body and psyche. We witness the torment of deciding whether this is to be his last season, and we are there as he goes through the public agony of playing out his retirement in public. And then it's no more. Our cast is the team around him; the billionaire owner, JP McManus, the trainers, the fellow jockeys that make up that unique band of brothers, and above all, his wife Chanelle, who has lived through everything at his side. This is far from just being a story about racing, although there will certainly never be another AP McCoy. It is about universal themes, recognisable to the widest audience; relationships, decisions, sacrifices. CULTURAL REPRESENTATIONS OF THE MOORS MURDERERS AND YORKSHIRE RIPPER CASES by HENRIETTA PHILLIPA ANNE MALION PHILLIPS A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Modern Languages School of Languages, Cultures, Art History, and Music College of Arts and Law The University of Birmingham October 2016 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. Any use made of information contained in this thesis/dissertation must be in accordance with that legislation and must be properly acknowledged. Further distribution or reproduction in any format is prohibited without the permission of the copyright holder. Abstract This thesis examines written, audio-visual and musical representations of real-life British serial killers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady (the ‘Moors Murderers’) and Peter Sutcliffe (the ‘Yorkshire Ripper’), from the time of their crimes to the present day, and their proliferation beyond the cases’ immediate historical-legal context. Through the theoretical construct ‘Northientalism’ I interrogate such representations’ replication and engagement of stereotypes and anxieties accruing to the figure of the white working- class ‘Northern’ subject in these cases, within a broader context of pre-existing historical trajectories and generic conventions of Northern and true crime representation. Interrogating changing perceptions of the cultural functions and meanings of murderers in late-capitalist socio-cultural history, I argue that the underlying structure of true crime is the counterbalance between the exceptional and the everyday, in service of which its second crucial structuring technique – the depiction of physical detail – operates.

  • Innovations at Cannes
Innovations at Cannes By Ron Holloway Fall 2000 Issue of KINEMA CANNES: INNOVATIONS IN THE CERTAIN REGARD, DIRECTORS’ FORTNIGHT AND CRITICS WEEK For the third year in a row, an entry in Un Certain Regard was awarded the increasingly important prize of the Fondation GAN pour le cinéma (worth FF 200,000 in French distribution aid) by an independent international jury. Consequently this Cannes sidebar is now viewed by many as a ”backup festival” to the Competition in the official program. For the second year in a row under the new management ofMarie- Pierre Macia, the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (Directors’ Fortnight) continued to distance itself from the prior policies of Pierre-Henri Deleau (three decades on the job) by formulating a programming image that was even more actor-and-personality oriented than last year’s event. And for the first time in 16 years, the Semaine de la critique (Critics Week) finds itself under new management: José María Riba was elected by the Paris-based critics to replace Jean Roy on the job. UN CERTAIN REGARD VIEWS Two years ago, in 1998, the Fondation GAN pour le cinéma awarded its prize for the first time to Darezhan Omirbaev’s Tuer à gages (Killer, Kazakhstan-France). In 1999, it went to Jasmin Dizdar’s Beautiful People (UK). This year, the jury, headed by actress Jane Birkin, gave its prize to Rodrigo Garcia’s Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her (USA), a collection of five vignettes about intertwined relationships shared by a group of men and women. Herewith some random comments on seven other films from around the world that were selected for programming in the Certain Regard, regarded by many festival directors as a fertile hunting-ground for entries to programme in their own competitions: Le premier du nom (First of the Name, France-Switzerland), Sabine Franel Sabine Franel, better known as a film editor, has collaborated in the past with Portuguese master Mañoel de Oliveira (Les Cannibales, 1988 Cannes entry), João Canjo, Claude Weisz, and Emil Weisz.
