POLYGAMY Polygamist prisoners, State Penitentiary, 1888 When establishing the LDS Church, Joseph Smith recorded numerous revelations he claimed to receive, often in answer to questions about the Bible, which are now included in the Doctrine and Covenants, part of the LDS canon. In answer to his question as to why many of the Old Testament leaders had more than one wife, Smith received what is now known as Section 132. Although the revelation was not recorded until 1843, Smith may have received it in the 1830s and married his first plural wife, Fanny Alger, in 1835. Polygamy was not openly practiced in the Mormon Church until 1852 when Orson Pratt, an apostle, made a public speech defending it as a tenet of the church. From 1852 until 1890, Mormon Church leaders preached and encouraged members, especially those in leadership positions, to marry additional wives. A majority of the Latter-day Saints never lived the principle. The number of families involved varied by community; for example, 30 percent in St. George in 1870 and 40 percent in 1880 practiced polygamy, while only 5 percent in South Weber practiced the principle in 1880. Rather than the harems often suggested in non-Mormon sources, most Mormon husbands married only two wives. The wives usually lived in separate homes and had direct responsibility for their children. Where the wives lived near each other, the husbands usually visited each wife on a daily or weekly basis. While there were the expected troubles between wives and families, polygamy was usually not the only cause, although it certainly could cause greater tension. -

1 The Complexities of Sex Education in Utah Grace Sponaugle Occidental College, Urban & Environmental Policy Professor Cha, Professor Matsuoka, & Professor Shamasunder April 8, 2019 Sponaugle 2 Abstract Utah has a state-wide policy of abstinence education. Abstinence education programs have been proven to be ineffective at delaying the initiation of sex and changing sexual risk behaviors (Santelli et al., 2017), correlating with high rates of teen pregnancies and STIs ((Stanger-Hall & Hall, 2011)(McCammon, 2017)). Limiting the standards by which sex education programs are deemed “effective” to disease and pregnancy prevention, neglects the holistic view of sexual health as defined by the CDC. Therefore, in an attempt to understand the broader implications that sex education has had on youth in Utah, this study examined, through a survey and interviews, the social, cultural, and educational influences that youth in Utah attributed to their sex education. Additionally, this study analyzed how these influences have played a role in the youth’s self perception of their sexual knowledge and sexual health. This research revealed that abstinence education is inherently limited, calling for Utah to expand its sex education framework beyond abstinence education and embrace a comprehensive model for sex education. Department of The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada DE-6 (2/88) Abstract My study examines white cultural practices in home economics education in British Columbia between 1913 and 1936 through two home economics manuals developed in the province for the express purpose of educating young women. My methodology is informed by postcolonial constructs, social feminism, and white studies. My experiences as a classroom teacher and as a volunteer teacher in Malawi are interwoven with my findings. I use the metaphor of white sauce, a recipe frequently made in traditional classrooms, in describing the current close alignment of home economics with white culture. -

Martha Hughes Cannon: An Example of a New Womanhood in Utah Martha Hughes Cannon, a nineteenth-century intellectual and activist, was described by a Chicago newspaper as "the brightest exponent of the women's cause in the United States."1 Cannon is most well known for being the first female state senator in the US. She ran as a Democrat and was elected on November 3, 1896. Cannon's additional claim to fame is that she defeated her husband, who ran as a Republican, by nearly 3,000 votes. A local paper commented on the husband's loss by saying, ``Mrs. Mattie Hughes Cannon, his wife, is the better man of the two. Send Mrs. Cannon to the State Senate and let Mr. Cannon, as a Republican, remain at home to manage home industry.''2 Martha didn't intend for her victory to overshadow her husband--she was simply trying to gain the power to enact the health reform legislation that she saw as necessary for the health of under-represented Utahns, such as women, children and the disabled. Despite Cannon's fame as a Utah Senator, she had many achievements under her belt before she ran for public office. At age nineteen she decided she wanted to be a doctor, and soon graduated from the University of Deseret with a degree in chemistry. Within five more years she completed her medical degree at the University of Michigan, went on to earn a B.S. from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Pharmacy and a bachelors of oratory degree from the National School of Elocution and Oratory. -

Nephew of the founding Prophet, President Joseph Smith Jr. (1805-1844), Joseph F. Smith was the sixth president of the Mormon Church. During his presidency (1901-1918), he redefined Mormonism. He helped change the perception of what a Mormon was, both inside and outside the faith. He did so by organizing the structure of the faith theologically, historically, ideologically, and institutionally. In doing this, he set the tone for what Mormonism would become, and set a standard paradigm for the world of what a Mormon is. Joseph F. -

EDUCATION IN ZION We move forward faithfully into the future only by understanding our past. Our founding stories reveal to us the higher purposes for which our forebears strove, and help us know the path that we should follow. Therefore, we seek truth wherever it might be found and strive to shape our lives by it. In the Zion tradition, we share the truth freely so that every person might learn and grow and in turn strengthen others. From our faith in Christ and our love for one another, our commitment to education flows.
