FOREWORD:

Realizing that today is done and that the sun of tomorrow is rising, we, the Senior Class of 1958-59 take another step further. Our life has not ended; it is only begin- ning. The time has come when we must put into practice the theoretical learning that we received at Henderson Institute. The critical test is yet to come--the test that will determine success or failure. We mus: oay that these four years have not been our best ones, but they certainly have been happy ones. May this book, the 1958-59 Panther, serve to reveal flashes of life and the Campus of Henderson Institute high school-life as it was lived by the Seniors of 1958- 59.

Try first thyself, and after calling God; for to the worker

God himself lends aid. . . To a warming personality, one who has gone quietly about her daily tasks without compliment

or fanfare, yet exhibiting a driving devotion to duty. .. be-

cause of her tender care. .. because of her ceaseless efforts

to obtain the best. . . to accomplish the job and because of all of her efforts to develop the program to meet the needs of the students, we dedicate this, the 1958-1959 Panther to

You. . . Mrs. E. B. Engram. ^ ^^^M

Along with the other members of the Annual

Staff, we have attempted to portray in the pages of the 1958-59 yearbook, the spirit of growth and de- velopment at Henderson Institute. We have made an attempt to blend the new progress with a record- ing of traditional customs and activities so typical of every high school. We pledge our services to make this publication truly worthy and representative of the progressive movement at Henderson Institute. We honestly hope that we have accomplished this aim.

\*)f.^ SENIORS: Have you spent four years in a cowardly struggle for your diploma?

Today, in this scientific era, there is a great demand for eyes that see, ears that hear, minds that think and hearts that feel. Are you among the many students who have become too content with their own ways or too cultured in their own pursuits to think of matters of a world into which they are about to enter? * - ;: As the pages of the future gradually unfold before you, don't shut your eyes to the struggles of mankind, don't close your ears to the

calls of service, don't narrow your minds with small thinking, or harden your hearts with selfishness. If you do, you will have failed

to live a life that is abundant. May God speed the moment when you are challenged to carry your share of the burden.

CLASS HISTORY

A peep into the days of yester-year found us starry eyed and eager to grasp the hand that firmly helped to shape the ABC's which later grew into simple words and names to spell and write. The years slipped by unnoticed but they gave to us valuable assets, such as knowledge, intelligence, curiosity and an unlimited world of opportunities. Father time just kept on moving until one hot day in May, breathless and excited, we hurried home from Nutbush, Carver, Kittrell, Lelia B. Yancey, Eaton-Johnson and various other county schools, with report cards held high

to say, Look Moml I'll be in high school next year. In September of 1955, we met at Henderson Institute happy, excited and with a feeling of togetherness. The years have quickly come and gone, but we managed to build a store house of information on which we can rely for many years to come. Our key of knowledge, given to us by the patient members of our faculty will forever be used to open the doors to higher realms of knowledge.

By Bessie Cheeks - Sandy Royster

Class Poem

To live, love and cherish thee Our aim should always be. To always abide by your rule And honor Thee.

When far away our bodies have gone Our thoughts will turn to you, our home A home where we have learned

I niiiiiilMili To be honest, and trusty and To always use our courtesy Will all who we may come in contact with And make use of our time by being swift.

Now with tear filled eyes And heavy hearts We must make our sad departs.

But the memory shall Always linger near Of the four happy years That we've spent here

By Olivia L. Walker

CLASS WILL

In the year of 1959 we, the Senior Class, at the school of Henderson Institute, in the state of North Carolina, county of Vance and town of Henderson, being in com- plete health and mental being make our last will and testament declaring that any wills made in opposition to this, the original one, are not valid.

In this state of sound mental condition do we dispose of our possessions: To our Mncipal; we give our appreciation for the pleasing manner in which he assisted us throughout the years; his guidance, interest and patience for us at all times. To the Music Department; our ability to pay attention to the directors and as much appreciation of music as possible. To the Thespians - many words of thanks for the training given to our outstanding actors and actresses. To the Athletic Department, we leave our good sportsmanship and hope that they will make the trophies increase in the years to come. To the Juniors, we leave our dignity and our scholastic abilities and hope that their senior year will be very enjoyable. To the Sophomores, we leave our understanding and abilities which vnll be very important in the years to come.

To the Freshmen, our ability to hold on when the going is rough and your high school life will be very pleasant. To the lower grades, we leave our luck, understanding and hope that they vnll later enter high school.

And last, we appoint and name Mr, W. A. CoUett, Mr. J. P. McLaughlin and Mrs.

M. S. Bullock our most worthy and deserved executors of this our last will and testa- ment.
