Future of U.S. & China Conference Seeking Truth Through Facts U.S.-China Series Program 5 of 5: THIRD ANNUAL Future of U.S. & China Conference Thursday, January 14, 2021 Webcast ASIA SOCIETY NORTHERN CALIFORNIA : FUTURE OF U.S. & CHINA CONFERENCE Dear friends, Thank you for kicking off 2021 with us at our third annual virtual Future of U.S. and China conference. With this event, the final program of our five-part Seeking Truth Through Facts U.S.-China series, we strive to advance our mission of navigating understanding of what is arguably the most important bilateral relationship of our lifetime. We have convened top speakers and a quality audience for you in our ongoing effort to bring to the global community more voices on Asia, and from Asia. Our full-day virtual program lineup includes 28 speakers across multiple time zones, on topics ranging from trade, the economy, technology, domestic politics, territorial disputes and the path forward. The highlight of our event is our tribute to Secretary George P. Shultz - for his lifelong contributions to U.S.-China relations, longtime service as Honorary Chair of Asia Society Northern California, and in celebration of his centennial birthday. In the second half of our program, Secretary Shultz will do a joint interview with Dr. Henry Kissinger, moderated by our Policy Institute VP Danny Russel. We also welcome our new global Asia Society President & CEO Kevin Rudd, the 26th Prime Minister of Australia, who will give a keynote address. Joining us for the second time during this coronavirus pandemic is California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis. She inspired all of us by speaking live at our virtual annual gala in April 2020, which was hosted three weeks after the shelter in place order in San Francisco. Her non-profit experience includes the Berggruen Institute, where she launched a Philosophy + Culture Institute with a focus on the U.S. and China. Margaret was based in Asia for several years as a television news correspondent with ABC News in Jakarta and Tokyo, and with Bloomberg Television in Shanghai. She was part of the global ABC team that won a News and Documentary Emmy Award for presidential inauguration coverage. Her interviews include Howard Schultz, Richard Branson, Ban Ki-Moon, LeBron James and Beyoncé. She has a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and a master’s in journalism from the University of Hong Kong, which specializes in coverage of Asia. Margaret was selected as one of the Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business by the San Francisco Business Times in 2019. She is a member of the International Women’s Forum. Opening Remarks Ambassador Eleni Kounalakis was sworn in as the 50th Lieutenant Governor of California by Governor Gavin Newsom on January 7th, 2019. She is the first woman elected Lt. Governor of California. A native Californian, she visited each of the state’s 58 counties during her historic campaign. From 2010 to 2013, Kounalakis served as President Barack Obama’s Ambassador to the Republic of Hungary. Kounalakis was the first Greek-American woman – and at age 43 one of America’s youngest – to serve as U.S. Ambassador. Her highly acclaimed memoir, “Madam Ambassador, Three Years of Diplomacy, Dinner Parties and Democracy in Budapest” (The New Press, 2015), chronicles the onset of Hungary’s democratic backsliding. Governor Jerry Brown appointed Kounalakis to chair the California Advisory Council for International Trade and Investment in 2014. Kounalakis was a Virtual Fellow at the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR) between 2014 and 2017, specializing in international trade and immigration. She is currently a director of the Association of American Ambassadors and a National Democratic Institute (NDI) “Ambassadors Circle” advisor. continued next page 6 ASIA SOCIETY NORTHERN CALIFORNIA : FUTURE OF U.S. & CHINA CONFERENCE SPEAKER BIOS Session 1: The Global Chessboard The Honorable Kevin Rudd is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Asia Society, as of January 1st, 2021 and President of the Asia Society Policy Institute. He served as Australia’s 26th Prime Minister (2007-2010, 2013) and as Foreign Minister (2010-2012). He is also a leading international authority on China. He began his career as a China scholar, serving as an Australian diplomat in Beijing before entering Australian politics. As Prime Minister, he led Australia’s response during the Global Financial Crisis, reviewed by the IMF as the most effective stimulus strategy of all member states. Mr. Rudd co-founded the G20 to drive the global response to the crisis. He was active in global foreign policy leadership, serving as a driving force in expanding the East Asia Summit to include the U.S. and Russia. Mr. Rudd legislated for a 20% mandatory renewable energy target for Australia. He was a member of the UN Secretary-General’s High Level Panel on Global Sustainability and is a co-author of the report Resilient People, Resilient Planet for the 2012 Rio+20 Conference. His government turned Australia into one of the top ten aid donors in the world – increasing their foreign aid budget to approximately $5 billion.

    ENDING GOVERNMENT BAILOUTS AS WE KNOW THEM A Policy Workshop Thursday, December 10, 2009 Stauffer Auditorium Hoover Institution PURPOSE Fear that failure of a large complex financial institution can cause severe damage to the economy has created a pervasive bailout mentality among policymakers in the United States. As a result the federal government has committed huge amounts of taxpayer dollars, intervened in a host of normally private‐sector activities, and induced excessive risk‐taking by people expecting the bailout policy to continue. Americans are understandably angry about a policy which rescues the people who take risks and fail at the expense of everyone else. But how can we reduce the bailouts? This rarely exhibited manuscript, now in the collection of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, features more than 30 miniatures that illustrate scenes from the Persian national epic, the Shahnamah (Book of Kings). This is the first time that the intricately colored and gilded illustrations in the manuscript— recently unbound and conserved—have all been exhibited together in the United States. Although it is not known when the epic was first illustrated, countless copies of this poem have been made through the ages. Mason Endowment Fund WWII history.
