Hello friends -

Is it October already??? Where did the time go? With the crisp fall air, trees changing colors, and every coffee beverage in the city now available in “Pumpkin Spice” flavor, October is clearly upon us. And with October comes…. Halloween. We took the theme seriously this month, blending it into our feature stories to deliver scary fun wherever possible. From “creepy” cocktails, to “monster” concerts, to fun “costume inspired” fashion for men and women, we tied in the All Hallows' Eve “spirit” throughout this issue. And don’t miss our special “Tourist in Your Own City” on page 76 to get our tips for the best haunted houses and haunted hayrides, and of course the legendary Village Halloween parade. We also went big for Broadway, with an extended feature on all of the incredible new shows coming out for fall. There are so many major stars and new productions coming to the Great White Way, we have curated the scoop on each of them for you. The theater coverage kicks off on page 52, and don’t miss our exclusive interview with Anna Camp capping off the coverage, talking about her new show on page 62. And as always, we have covered the top sporting events, exhibits, delicious eats for “pasta month”, best dining listings and so much more. Thank you for picking us up this month and letting us give you the insider’s info on all there is to do in NYC for October. Any thoughts or comments that you may have on NYC Monthly are always welcome, please email me at spears@nyconthly. com. If you don’t want to wait around for the end of the month to get in the Halloween spirit, Manhattan is full of bars that give the option of celebrating a bit early. Some are meant to spook; some encourage costuming; all are best visited this time of the year. Make those haunted house plans for daytime hours— you’ll want to be sipping at one of these spots at night.

Beetle House wo bartenders are quickly making names for themselves Tby opening drinking dens themed around film-industry celebrities. First, there was Stay Classy New York in the Lower East Side based on Will Ferrell, and shortly thereafter just a bit uptown in the East Village came Beetle House, an ode to Tim Burton and “all things dark and lovely.” Tables for prix-fixe dinners require reservations in advance, but the bar neither mandates nor accepts reservations, meaning you can pop in whenever you wish to relive some Alice in Wonderland or Edward Scissorhands fantasies. Cobwebs, skulls, and chandeliers that look filched from a vampire’s castle comprise the theatrical set, complete with a Beetlejuice host who will usher you to a barstool. Following some lawsuits from Warner Bros., the establishment is very careful to say that it’s not officially affiliated with Burton, but the cocktails are, of course, inspired heavily by the moviemaker’s creations. There’s Edward’s Lemonade, an old fashioned dashed with orange bitters; the rum-and-coconut Coco Skellington; and, most fittingly for October, the This is Halloween!, with the cinnamon candy spice of Fireball, pumpkin liqueur, and flavors of sour apple all in the same glass. rick or treat! One of the best things about the season leading up to Hallow’s Eve T(aside from the Jack-o-Lanterns and candy, of course) is the fun of dressing up and expressing some sides of yourself that don’t necessarily get a lot of time in the spotlight. Whether you’re going to use the holiday as a jumping off point for a radical change, or if you’re simply aiming to add some killer coolness to your wardrobe, we’ve got some of the coolest looks inspired by some of the most iconic Halloween costumes that you’ll find in NYC this year.

THE PANTOM OF THE OPERA erhaps one of the most iconic characters Pin musical theater history, the titular character in The Phantom of the Opera has also become a supremely popular choice for Halloween. He’s kind of a slam dunk for everyone, isn’t he? Tall, dark, handsome (as long as the mask stays on) and with a spellbinding dash of mystery. Perfect for such a holiday. For a look inspired by this iconic character, slip into an impossibly great tux from Hugo Boss, the Stretch Virgin Wool model. The satin trim on the peaked lapels provide some drama, while the darts at the front and back of the jacket are there to accentuate your shoulders and taper your waist. Of course, we’re not going to suggest a mask, but it is important to note how that flash of white up top does add a fun focal point. In the spirit of DAPPER tipping the hat to the phantom, slip on a pair of champagne Marion Sun shades from DRESS-UP Brooklyn Spectacles. 20 NYCMONTHLY.COM INDIANA JONES o maybe the dapper, buttoned- Sup look isn’t what you’re looking for this Halloween. Maybe you’re the rugged type or perhaps you’re looking to embrace that side of your personality. Hallow’s Eve is all about exploration and expression, after all. Indiana Jones is the epitome of all things dangerously rugged, and the centerpiece of achieving his heroic ensemble is finding the perfect brown leather jacket.

Eddie Bauer’s Leather Journeyman Bomber Jacket looks exactly like something that Harrison Ford’s Dr. Jones would wear. alloween is a time for self-expression and frivolity. Even if your day-to-day life Hdoesn’t allow for much creativity, this season we encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone to let some of that energy in. Maybe you’re not into playing dress-up on October 31st, but you can still wrap yourself up in a flamboyant revision of what pieces you’d typically gravitate toward. Let loose. If you’re normally the buttoned-up type, why not be a bit wild? If you play it fast and loose, how about a sublime wardrobe updo? Whatever your inclinations might be, let Halloween be an opportunity to have some fun with who you are and what you wear. Take a peek at these iconic characters and the radiant looks that they’ve inspired.

CATWOMAN omic book genius Bob invented the feline Canti-hero, Catwoman in the spring of 1940. Since that time, her costume has evolved many times and has incorporated numerous iterations of shapes and colors. However, none are more iconic for the burglar/detective than her sexy black catsuit. While we’re not encouraging you to go the rubberized route that Michelle Pfeiffer took in the 1992 Tim Burton film adaptation, we do have something that will scratch all of your Selina Kyle itches.

Isabel Benenato’s Cropped Biker Jacket is a form-accentuating and streamlined and shapely black leather, wool-yak blend and wool-linen blended option as the cooler weather blows in. The bottom hem is rounded and the zippered front, when opened, cascades like a waterfall. Zip it up, and you’ll be ready to sleekly slip through the streets as evening descends. national Twirl Through this Celebration at These Prime Pasta MONTH Joints ush those diets aside this month, as October Pmarks a month-long ode to pasta in all of its pastaforms—and where better to celebrate than a city with as much Italian history as New York? First of all, the kitchen is the centerpiece of the restaurant and entirely open, so you can watch your pasta being tossed in a wok as your chef tells you about the roots of whichever of the eight pastas you chose. The head chef and owner Massimo Sola earned a Michilin star in Italy before coming here to fulfill a dream of bringing the highest grade of pasta to the masses (prices hover around $16) as well as test out a concept of incorporating chefs into the dining experience; don’t be surprised if, even though you didn’t snag one of the 16 seats at the bar around the open kitchen, your chef hand-delivers your tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms or pesto-flecked trofie with potatoes directly to your table. Using woks, too, is certainly an experimental way to cook this carbohydrate, but it’s proving a success—this spot is as hot as its burners. (330 West Broadway)

The complicated bond between nature and fashion, one woman’s distinctive style, and familiar items that have stood the test of time are the subjects explored, and they’re all well worth checking out.

“Force of Nature” at the Museum at FIT here has long existed a relationship between Tnature and fashion, resulting not only in obvious items like floral-patterned garments, but in recent concepts about sustainable methods of manufacturing. The Museum at FIT explores this complex connection in “Force of Nature,” a show that spans the 18th century to the present. Each of its 10 sections focuses on one aspect of fashion and nature, such as sexual attraction, animal skin patterns, and flowers, with all clothing, textiles, and accessories culled from the museum’s own collection. Among the many examples on display are several strikingly patterned Alexander McQueen dresses, Charles James’s “lobster” Three Fashion- dress, and a cheetah-trimmed Valentino couture coat. One theme is science Themed Shows and technology, as the work of some designers involves Focus on the biomimicry (using design Natural World, principles that imitate the processes of nature), such as Individual Style, swimwear that simulates sharkskin. The and Iconic Looks show also highlights how fashion manufacturing has traditionally had a negative impact on nature, though this is changing with many designers now employing more sustainable methods. “Items: Is Fashion Modern?” at MoMa tems: Is Fashion “IModern?” takes a look at 111 pieces of clothing or accessories that have shaped the world of fashion—and the world in general—during the past century or so, and which are still relevant today. The show traces the history of fashion through archetypes such as kilts, clogs, and flip- flops, ranging from pieces as basic as Levi’s 501s and the Little Black Dress to items as particular as moonboots and Spanx. Though there are garments and shoes from design titans including Versace, Dior, Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, and Alexander McQueen, the show is really about the objects themselves. Many are culturally charged, whether ancient garments such as the sari or keffiyeh, or hip-hop- related hoodies. Whether one wants to ponder the implications of the lifestyles of Birkin bag owners or just enjoy a stroll through a show of fascinating and familiar objects, “Items” should be of interest to anyone who “Sara Berman’s Closet” at the Met wears clothes, i.e., everyone. hen Sara Berman passed away in 2004 and wore shades of white and dressed in beautifully (Through 1/28/18, 11 W.
