TimesLOCAL 2019 Greystones Municipal District WE DELIVER! GREYSTONES MUNICIPAL People of the Year Awards DISTRICT in association with he 29th Greystones Peeple of the Year awards, sponsored by Wicklow Times, were held last Thursday evening in the beautiful surrounds of Greystones Golf Club. Unsung heroes Tfrom around the Greystones district were celebrated in an evening that was devoted to those who give their time and skills to making their community a better place to live. Next year sees the event celebrating 30 years and will be bigger and better than ever. It's not too early to start thinking about who you would like to see honoured by a People of the Year nomination. CIVIC AWARD WINNER - PATRICK “PAPPY” FRAWLEY The joint winner of this year's Civic Award is Patrick Pappy Frawley. Pappy is regarded as an unsung hero in his home town of Kilcoole for his years of charity work, carried out quietly and without fuss.

In 1996 Pappy set up the Gemma Appeal to help little Gemma Lewis, who urgently needed surgery to save her hearing. The fund sent Gemma to Florida to Disneyworld and Gemma successfully recovered from her surgery and regained her hearing. Since then the Gemma Appeal has carried on helping sick children. Over the years they have helped 18 local children, some of which went on to make recoveries while others sadly passed on and are remembered with love. They have helped the families of sick children with heating costs, bills, trips away and funeral costs, running all sorts of fundrais- ers to find the money. Recently the Gemma Appeal donated two defibrillators to the village. Pappy is also known for his involvement in local sports and is a member of Kilcoole GAA and a local golf society. He is one of the driving forces behind the Kool House Draw. A measure of Pappy's success is evident in Gemma Lewis, who is now in her twenties and is married and living happily in Australia. Congratulations to Pappy Frawley, this year’s joint Greystones Civic Person of the Year.

Councillor Derek Mitchell presents the Special Recognition Award to David Mungavin, John Daly and Gary McDowall of Congratulations to Ailbhe Skay, Greystones Cultural Person of the Year. Greystones Churches Together at the Greystones People of the Year Awards

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD WINNER - GREYSTONES CHURCHES TOGETHER The winner of this year's Special Recognition Award is Greystones Churches Together, a group consisting of St Patrick's Church, the Holy Rosary and the Presbyterian Church.

These three churches regularly come together to operate as a single entity for the betterment of their community. The weekly soup and sandwiches event is an example of a joint venture that brings people together while raising money for worthy charities. People are free to pop along and have delicious soup and a sandwich for just €5 while enjoying some good company and helping their community at the same time. The three churches also come together during St Patrick's celebrations to collaborate in celebrating their joint Christian heritage, providing a parade float that embraces all Christian traditions in the town. The coming together of the three churches is a timely example that we are stronger when working together. Congratulations to Greystones Churches Together, winners of this year's Greystones People of the Year Special Recognition award. SPORTS PERSON OF THE YEAR - THERESA KINNANNE The winner of the Sports Person of the Year is Theresa Kinnane. Theresa is founder ad current secretary and coach of Greystones Athletics Club. Following her passion for athletics Theresa established the club 27 years ago. Greystones Municipal District Manager Michael Nicholson presents the From its humble beginnings in the Cultural Award to Ailbhe Skay fields behind St Laurence's School it has gone from strength to strength and now has 270 members of all ages.

Over the past 27 years Theresa has personally coached hundreds of young Greystones athletes. She not only leads the coaching team but as secretary and chief organiser, has driven the club to be one of the top performing clubs in Leinster. Theresa's energy, commitment and multitasking skills are boundless and she is on the track coaching long hours at least three nights a week come rain, hail or shine. Theresa represents Greystones and Wicklow at national level in the athletic world travelling around the country to Cross Country and track and field athletic competitions to officiate as track judge and referee. All of Theresa's work with the club is completely voluntary and she manages to generously give her time while also working full time and minding her Shay Fitzmaurice of Wicklow Times presents the 'Young Entrepreneur grandchildren. Congratulations to Theresa Kinnane, Greystones Award' to Sallyann Dooley, who collected the award on behalf of her Sports Person of the Year. daughter Johanna YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR - JOHANNA DOOLEY The winner of the Greystones Young Entrepreneur of the Year is Johanna Dooley. Now living in Melbourne, former Retail and Services Management student Johanna set up popular contemporary fashion rental service 'Borrower Boutique' while back home in Wicklow.

The idea came from years of lending pieces to family and friends and seeing how clothes could be shared around giving enjoyment to a number of wearers instead of just one. The service offers designer pieces for rent for as little as €40 per night and has turned a passion for fashion into a thriving business. Johanna says that renting clothes is all about increasing the lifespan of garments while being a sustainable alternative to disposable fashion and over consumption. The company provides clients with the latest styles, but in a cost effective way. The business is based in Dublin and Minister Simon Harris presents Theresa Kinnane with the Sports Person of Wicklow and even includes a handy 'try on' service for users. This award recognises Johanna's entrepreneurial spirit and marks her out as one to watch for the future. Congratulations to Johanna Dooley, the Year Award Young Entrepreneur of the Year. WICKLOW
