In mid-June, crews removed portions of the old sidewalk in the globe garden area and replaced it with a fresh, smooth coat of cement. The project included the entire sidewalk around the globe, where one week was spent removing the old path and the following week spent creating a new path. People who take morning walks around the globe will definitely notice the difference.

In mid-June, refurbished sidewalks were added to the globe garden area and around the globe. The General Meeting for the On Top of the World Condominium As- sociation was held at 9 a.m. on June 14. It was refreshing to see so large a turnout. The written questions were all thoughtful and pertinent to the As- sociation.

Quite a bit has happened in a relatively short time. Here is a recap of the largest projects over the past 12 months: • Inspection and Enforcement Services have been ongoing; • The hub of communication and interest for residents is regularly updated at OTOWClearwaterinfo.com. (If you haven’t already done so, sign up to receive emails on items of interest affecting your community); • Competitive pricing on paving allowed for resurfacing of 24 parking lots and seven streets; • All six, six-ton air conditioning units were replaced at the East Activity Center; • Roofing projects included five complete re-roofs, and five mansard re-roofs.

The Association’s restructured inspection service enforces rules, stan- dards, awareness and compliance in this community. IMPORTANT NOTICE Dryers, washers must be inspected by licensed plumbers, electricians The management company for On Top of the World Condominium Association has found instances of improperly installed washer/dryer units in several condominium units. These washer/dryer installations have been made without approval and guidance from the Association and without compliance to the plumbing code or the electrical code. This leaves the owner and/or prospective new owners open to significant liability in the event of an overflow or a fire. Your Association strongly urges an inspection of washers and dryers installed in any condominiums built prior to 1995, in particular, those units located on the east side of Belcher Road. If your unit is located on the west side of Belcher, you may also be im- pacted if a washer and dryer were added after purchasing the unit. The Association strongly urges you to contact both a licensed, insured plumber and electrician and arrange for an inspection immediately. Corrections to these potential hazards are the unit owner’s obligation. Forward any documentation from the inspection to the OTOW Condominium As- sociation, 2069 World Parkway Blvd. E, Clearwater, Fl., 33763. A copy will be retained in a permanent file for that unit. If work was undertaken to correct the problem, such reme- dial work must be described in the documentation. Only documentation received from a licensed plumber or electrician will be considered valid. All parties are put on Notice that the Association does not accept responsi- bility nor shall it assume responsibility for any type of loss or damage resulting from installed washers or dryers. In those instances where the Association has been required to expend sums of money to make repairs resulting from installed washers or dryers, the Association reserves the right to take legal action against the owners of the units where the washers or dryers are installed. Residents from the east side return home after a trip on the Jolly Trolley. Jolly Trolley takes club members to lunch

Singles Club

By Mary Widman The Singles Club luncheon trip to the Don Ce- sar resort in St. Petersburg was a great success. Transportation was by the Jolly Trolley. Many thanks to club President Dorothy Carpenito for making this a fun day. Dorothy has many other club activities planned for the future. At the luncheon, we celebrated Ann Pollock’s 95th birthday with a song and beautiful cake. Ann is a marvelous lady who has never spent a day in the hospital - how many of us can claim that statement? Residents from the west side pose for a picture after lunch. Ann showed us playing cards she received from her family. The cards had pictures of every family member. We all wish Ann many, many more years of good health and happiness. Our June meeting included a wine and cheese party. Our club will not meet during July and August. We will resume meeting in September. We meet the first Saturday of each month in the East Activity Center, starting at 6:30 p.m. If you know of any member who is ill, please call our Sunshine Lady Mary Widman at 796-1184 so she can send a card from the club. This month I would like to thank all the heroes who stood up in the line of fire to protect our nation during World War II. One such veteran is none other than John Velchoff, who came to On Top of the World with his wife Flor- ence in 1993. I asked John how they met, and he replied, “My high school was having a Saturday night dance which I didn’t have a date for, so a friend of mine set me up with a blind date, Flo Akers, who later became my wife.” This all happened on the Missis- sippi River, in the town of Vicksburg, Miss. In 1943, during the second World War, John graduated from high school at age 17. He and a group of graduates went to enlist in the U.S. Marines. John was 5-feet, 6-inches tall and to his dis- may the minimum height requirement to be a Marine was 5-feet, 8-inches tall. John spoke to the officer in charge and was told that if he passed the physical and made it through “boot camp” he would be a Marine. John told the officer, “I’m only 66 inches tall,” but the officer an- swered, “If the Marines say you’re 68 inches tall, you’re 68 inches tall.” John survived 12 weeks of train- ing at Camp Lejeune, Paris Island, S.C. He became a member of the Marines Marching Band in September 1943. He had played a snare drum at high school dances and in parades with the Sons of the American Legion, so he was right at home with the Marine Marching Band. In 1944, after a 10-day furlough, he was shipped overseas. The Marines’ presence in the Pa- cific theater consisted of the 4th Ma- John Velchoff shows off his drum set. An interesting fact: Their third oyster bar is alongside the building where the very first Coca-Cola was bottled, in 1894. Recently, John was invited to take part in “Honor Flight,” bringing WWII veterans from west central Florida to Washington, D.C. for recognition. His day started at 4 a.m. at Tam- pa International Airport. He received breakfast at the Marriott Hotel before boarding an American Airlines charter flight to Washington’s Ronald Reagan Airport. Along with fellow veterans, John was honored at the Iwo Jima Memorial, where they gathered for a group photo. His tour also included the changing of the guard at the tomb of the “Un- known Soldier” at Arlington National Cemetery and a stop at the WWII Me- morial, which John says is the jewel in the crown of all memorials. John says he enjoys three-day trips to Biloxi, Miss., to see how his money is doing. He keeps young by keeping busy. His final comment during this in- terview was, “Now you know why they call me Mississippi John.” A salute to you, John, for giving your love, courage and strength while protecting our country’s freedom. Wii Bowling

By Terry Mikulski Wii bowling has been growing since the first Sunday we started, and thanks to the Good Neighbors Asso- ciation, we now have two TV sets. We were using one 32-inch TV, which allowed four people to bowl one game at a time, but now we can accomodate eight bowlers at a time. With 12 to 14 people now par- ticipating in Wii Bowling, we were only able to bowl one game in our time slot. With the extra TV, we can now bowl more games. Thank you Good Neighbors! A year ago, you had booked a cruise to China and Singapore for this year, and then you got an e-mail from the cruise company saying they were overbooked and would you be willing to change your plans.
