People with Backbone

We like people with backbone, The courage of their convictions; who follow through on what they say they will do, who are not wishy-washy. Jesus was like that.

He feels a fire in his heart, in his belly and he wants it to be lit. The fire is the fire of justice– wanting the justice this widow was due. The job of the judge at that time was to care for the widow and orphan, the neglected ones of society. She had a right to his assistance.

What he stands for, the church stands for, even with opposition. This is a culture which supports life at all stages; which speaks out against any injustice; which supports love and wants to encourage relationships of real and genuine love. Its views on sexuality and sexual relationships will mirror that, in a world where sex can be casually viewed and used. The Church supports the elderly, and a culture of sharing rather than accumulation of wealth; works and supports peace in the wold; And joins the fire of Jesus to bring the reign of God alive in the world.

The fire of Jesus is the fire of love, compassion and justice – three core values of the Christian and the Church.. We need to keep all that alive and not get caught up in administration and buildings, even overriding regrets about the past .

Can we hope that we can be a Church that fulfils and makes alive the best of the fire of Jesus? He ‘has come to bring fire to the earth’ and wants it to be kindled. Lord , may your kingdom come.

Michael Moloney a native of New Inn, Co Tipperary was ordained on 22nd February 1841 in Carlow College. His first appointment was as a Curate to Lusk Parish in 1841, the following year he was appointed as Curate to Rathdrum, from there in 1854 he was appointed Curate to Kilbride Barndarrig. We are told that during his time as curate in Kilbride his parish priest Fr. Hugh Daly showed him a vista of the parish stating “Moloney, Behold the Promised Land” Fr. Moloney was appointed Parish Priest in 1875 and immediately he undertook a programme of renovation as a number of the parish buildings had fallen into disrepair.

The lintel over the side door bears the inscription “this church was built by the Rev. Michael Moloney PP and dedicated by Cardinal McCabe June 6th 1880” this may have been a slight exaggeration on his behalf or an error by a later person, as it is known that a church was built on the site as early as 1793 by Rev Joseph Purcell with the aid of public subscriptions. What we do know is that Fr. Moloney undertook a major renovation of the church in Barndarrig and is responsible for the church as we know it today. Tenders were invited in April 1877 and the well-known ecclesiastical architect William Hague was engaged to oversee the work.

Works included three new Altars the improvement of the Apse and Sacristy and the addition of a new porch, external plastering, painting, new lead windows and a new window in the Apse over the high Altar. The window over the Altar is reputed to be the work of Michael Hubert Schmitz of Aix-la-Chapelle. The Gallery was shortened and improved new seats and doors were provided. The high alter of Caen stone with coloured marble enrichments was gifted by Fr. Moloney personally. One of the most remarkable features of the design, which is unusual in rural churches throughout Ireland is the amount of work devoted to the exterior decoration from the Parapets along each of the side walls to the gables, each of which is finished with a granite cross. Elaborate pinnacles rise high above the parapet with panelled faces and canopies, tapering spires adorned with carved crochets and are surmounted by delicate finials of metal.

On the June 6th 1880, the Archbishop of the Most Rev. Dr. Edward McCabe attended the opening and dedicated the church to Saint Mary Immaculate, and Saints Michael and John. Solemn Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Daniel Coyle CC Wicklow, Deacon Rev. Fr. Coffey CC Greenann, Sub-Deacon Fr. O’Reilly CC James St and the Master of ceremonies was the Rev J. Dumphey PP also present were V. Rev Cannon Keogh PP Balbriggan, V Rev Cannon Lacy PP Gorey, V Rev Fr. Dillon PP Wicklow, V Rev Fr. Moloney PP Barndarrig, Rev A.J. Quaide CC Saint Agetha’s and the Rev Fr. Duffy CC Barndarrig. The preacher was the Rev Fr. Edward Kelly. Fr Moloney passed away on 14th February 1890.
