FORUM | ISSUE 17 Zita Turi 1 Vessels of Passage: Reading the Ritual of the Late- Medieval Ship of Fools Zita Turi Eötvös Loránd University My paper explores the late-medieval image of the ship of fools. The metaphor originates in the fifteenth-century carnivals of Europe and was depicted in Sebastian Brant’s 1494 compilation, Das Narrenschiff. The paper explores the underlying dynamic of the imagery and its origins in carnivalesque rituals as well as how the motif was exploited by Brant, becoming a literary force at the turn of the sixteenth century. Introduction The ship of fools has long been present in Western art and literature. The image originates in the late- medieval carnivals of Europe and it condenses the allegory of a barge with a seemingly endless number of fools who are unaware of their lack of control over the ship. -

Abstract Early sixteenth century radical Anabaptism emanated in Switzerland during Huldrych Zwingli’s protest against the Roman Catholic Church. Much like Martin Luther, Zwingli founded his reform effort on the Bible being the final arbiter of the faith, sola scriptura, and the sufficiency of the shed blood of Christ plus nothing for eternal salvation, sola fide. Based on these principles both adopted the doctrine of the Priesthood of the Believer which recognized every believer’s Spirit empowered ability to read and interpret the Bible for themselves. These initial theological tenets resulted in the literal reading of the Bible and a very pragmatic Christian praxis including a Pauline pneumatology that recognized the efficacy of the manifestation of the charismata. Radical adherents of Zwingli rejected infant baptism as being totally unbiblical and insisted upon the rebaptism of adults, but only on a personal confession of faith, thus the term Anabaptist. -

Noah’s Ark or the Barque of St. Peter represent the community of the saved and redeemed. However, since Plato at least, the ship also symbolizes the Greek polis and later the Roman Empire. From the fourth century ‒ the Constantinian era ‒ on, these traditions merged. Christianity was made the state religion. Over the course of a millennium, church and state united in a religiously homogeneous, yet not always harmonious, Corpus Christianum. In the sixteenth century, the Reformation led to disenchantment with the sacred character of both church and state as mediators indispensible for religious and secular salvation. -

Canadian Contributions to Anabaptist Studies Since the 1960S
Canadian Contributions to Anabaptist Studies since the 1960s jonathan r. seiling1 University of Hamburg Anabaptist studies in Canada have been marked by an exceptional degree of productive, inter- confessional (or non-confessional) engagement, most notably between Mennonites, Baptists, and Lutherans. The institutions making the greatest contributions have been at the University of Waterloo (including, but not exclusively, Conrad Grebel University College), Queen’s University, and Acadia Divinity College. The geographic expansion of Anabaptist studies beyond the traditional Germanic centres into eastern Europe and Italy, and the re-orientation of analysis away from primarily theo- logical or intellectual history toward a greater focus on socio-political factors and networking, have been particular areas in which Canadian scholars have impacted Anabaptist studies. The relation- ship of Spiritualism (and later Pietism) to Anabaptist traditions and the nature of Biblicism within Anabaptism, including the greater attention to biblical hermeneutics with the “Marpeck renaissance,” have also been studied extensively by Canadians. International debates concerning “normative” Anabaptism and its genetic origins have also been driven by the past generations of Canadian schol- ars (monogenesis, polygenesis, post-polygenesis). Chapter 7 Hans Denck, Hans Hut, and Caspar Schwenckfeld Geoffrey Dipple i Mysticism and Reformation Radicalism The logical starting point for any discussion of the intersection of late medieval mysticism and Reformation radicalism is Steven Ozment’s Mysticism and Dissent. According to Ozment, mysticism was a revolutionary force in the sixteenth century, breaking the bonds of institutional and intellectual author- ity and laying the foundations for modern individualism and subjectivity. He describes the mystical enterprise as “transrational and transinstitutional,” with the potential for an “anti-intellectual and anti-institutional stance, which can be adopted for the critical purposes of dissent, reform, and even revolution.” Mystical theology, derived especially from the Theologia Deutsch (German Theology), declared and justified the “priority—if not sovereignty—of indi- vidual experience and insight in religious matters.” This process he traces from Thomas Müntzer, through Hans Hut, Hans Denck, and Sebastian Franck in the early years of the Reformation, and on to Sebastian Castellio and Valentin Wei- gel later on.1 In assembling his list of mystically inspired dissenters, Ozment ignores typological distinctions between different groups and individuals in the radical Reformation, arguing that similarities of dissent among these men outweighed other differences in their thought.2 However, as Emmet McLaugh- lin notes, typology is particularly valuable in the study of Reformation radicals who did not have recognized theological authorities, tightly organized in- stitutions, or the coercive power of the state available to enforce uniformity on their movements.3 Especially important in this context has been Ernst Troeltsch’s distinction between biblicist, sectarian Anabaptists and mystically inspired Spiritualists.
