Viceland to Premiere Six Episode Professional Wrestling Docu-Series: VICELAND TO PREMIERE SIX EPISODE PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING DOCU-SERIES: "DARK SIDE OF THE RING" PREMIERING WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10 @ 9PM SERIES EXPLORES THE SECRET HISTORIES OF SOME ​ OF WRESTLING'S BIGGEST NAMES INCLUDING: RANDY "MACHO MAN" SAVAGE, BRET HART, BRUISER BRODY, AND THE FABULOUS MOOLAH MARCH 29, 2019 – BROOKLYN, NY: VICELAND will premiere a new docu-series ​ set in the world of professional wrestling -- DARK SIDE OF THE RING -- on ​ ​ Wednesday, April 10 at 9 PM ET. ​ The six-episode series will examine the collision of fantasy and reality in the singular universe of professional wrestling -- the only sport whose stars' larger-than-life characters exist in and often out of the ring, telling some of the dark and untold stories around some of the sport's all-time greats -- stories that obsess hardcore wrestling fans and will compel new viewers alike. From backstage controversies to mysterious deaths and unsolved homicides, this series explores the darkest stories from the golden age of professional wrestling - with each episode centered on a professional wrestling icon, including the tragic love story of Randy "Macho Man" Savage and Miss Elizabeth, the infamous "Montreal ​ ​ ​ ​ Screwjob" which stripped Bret Hart of his title, the locker room altercation that led to ​ ​ the death of Bruiser Brody, as well as the dark history of the Von Erich wrestling ​ ​ ​ ​ dynasty, the controversial death of "Gorgeous" Gino Hernandez and a look at the ​ ​ intense allegations against legendary female star The Fabulous Moolah. ​ Guiding viewers through the stories is narrator Dutch Mantell, a leading authority on ​ ​ the sport and a retired manager, booker and wrestler with over 40 years in the game. DARK SIDE OF THE RING is from VICE CANADA and produced by Evan Husney ​ ​ and directed by Jason Eisener ("Hobo with a Shotgun"). The stakes were high. The loser would have his head shaved by the winner. (Spoiler alert: Trump won.) Both Trump and McMahon kept their suits on—oversized, with exceptionally long ties—in a way that made their heads appear to hover, disproportionately small, over their bulky (Trump) and bulked up (McMahon) bodies. As avatars of capitalist, patriarchal power, they left the heavy lifting to the gleamingly exposed, hypermasculinist bodies of their pro-wrestler surrogates. McMahon performed an expert heel turn: a craven villain, egging the audience to taunt him as a clueless, elitist frontman as he did the job of casting Trump as an (unlikely) babyface, the crowd’s champion. For his part, Trump seemed more mark than smart. Where McMahon and the other wrestlers were working around him, like ham actors in an outsized play, Trump was shooting the match: that is, not so much acting naturally as neglecting to act at all. He soaked up the cheers, stalked the ring, took a fall, threw a sucker punch, and claimed victory as if he (and he alone) had fought the good fight (WWE 2013b).

    Vice is doing a series of documentaries about the heavier aspects of the history of Pro Wrestling called The Dark Side of the Ring. These docs are taking a look at tragedies in the wrestling, and there are quite a few to choose from. The first one they released, and one of the finest true crime docs if you like the human side instead of the hard core investigative side, is about Bruiser Brody. And thus, having finished watching it, I realized I’d never done an issue dedicated to him. This issue, more than any other Claims Department I’ve ever done, will be the story of what it means to be a genius, to live in a world that has rules that are not those of the outside world. This is a story of an American who was a giant star in Japan, partly because he had so much trouble getting along with promoters in the US. This issue tells the story of a man who was an incredibly brawler, who bled in so many matches, who helped re-define what brawling was in an era when wrestling was completely being redefined. He was also an amazing wres- tler, could go on the ground , work a match that would make you believe he was a former Olympian. In short, it is the story of a man who was a master of his craft, and a man who knew he was a master of his craft. Yes, it has a tragic ending. Career Football career Kevin Adkisson played football at North Texas State University as a fullback, second string to Garry Smith, until an injury ended his football career and dream of playing in the National Football League. World Class Championship Wrestling Kevin started wrestling as Kevin Von Erich in 1976. He spent most of his career wrestling for his father's promotion, World Class Championship Wrestling. Kevin's natural athletic ability and good looks made him one of the promotion's biggest stars. He achieved great success in the company both as a singles and tag team wrestler, often participating in many of the company's high profile feuds. Kevin was also known for wrestling barefoot, highly unusual in a sport where almost all wrestlers wear high-topped boots. World Class announcers often jokingly referred to him as "The Barefoot Boy" on WCCW broadcasts. Kevin later admitted in an interview that he never set out to wrestle barefoot, but that before one of his matches someone hid his boots as a joke, and he wasn't able to find them before his match, so just went out barefoot to wrestle, and it later became his trademark.

He's known as a member of the Funk Wrestling Family, which includes his late father Dory Funk Sr. (May 4, 1919 – June 3, 1973) and his older brother Dory Funk Jr. (born 1941). (As a bonus, Terry and Dory Jr. are the only brothers to date to ever hold the NWA World Heavyweight title.) In addition, there is his acting resume, starting with Paradise Alley in 1978. He may not look like much, but he's taken bumps men a third his age would not consider, let alone attempt. While not quite the living embodiment of hardcore (that would be Abdullah the Butcher), he ranks pretty close; the Funkasaurus is a walking museum, proselytizing the heritage of the sport as it originated in mid-20th century fairs.
