Writing in Grey Joseph Schwartze UCCS Honors Program A Darker World The stories in this section look at the darker parts of our world. Fantasy is unnecessary to see depictions of true evil; it exists in day to day life. The mind does not have to warp itself in perverted defense mechanisms to see darkness in our average lives. These stories examine the consequences of the bad events in our world, from the lasting effects on a single person to the terrible choices some people are forced to make. We do not always know the darkness that surrounds us; only an unremarkable symbol might be the reminder. Other times, the darkness around us can be from our own choices, our own accomplishments, and we must live with that stink forever. These stories explore the grey in our world and how the black and white can mix into unfortunate realities. Choices in the Dark Clarissa took the shot, and she savored the burning sensation in her throat. She needed it, the pain. She needed the numbness that followed even more. Her eyes closed, and when she opened them, some 20-something college boy sat next to her. He was dressed like a preppy frat boy, with his khakis and a light blue polo shirt. She knew the drill. A pretty smile painted her features, and she leaned against the counter while she waited for him to say something. A quick adjustment and her dark red, revealing dress showed off more of her thighs and cleavage. “Can I buy you a drink?” he asked confidently.

Today the Merce Cunningham Trust announces Summer & Fall 2019 programming for the worldwide Merce Cunningham Centennial, which unites artists, companies, and cultural and educational institutions in a celebration of Cunningham’s vital impact. Launched in the fall of 2018 and continuing throughout all of 2019, the Centennial honors Cunningham’s legacy across continents and artistic disciplines. The diversity of activities and participating partners demonstrate the profound, enduring resonance of the choreographer’s work and his approach to how the body moves in time and space. On the Avenue Or the "I Won't Even Open It
A promenade ,of teen-age lust and ,,boredom By Elaine McArdle Standard-Times staff writer t's 9 p.m. on a June Thursday. Three teen-age girls in tourniquet-tight jeans stroll at a leisurely pace down I Acushnet Avenue in the North End of New Bedford. They're moving twice as fast as the traffic. Camaros, Corvettes, Mustang convertibles: bumper to bumper to bumper, a mile of humming engines stretching from Coggeshall Street to Lund's Corner. Motorcycles and pedestrians weave perilously in and out of the cars, whose radios wage a fierce battle for command of the night air. Van Halen roars from a white Dodge that spills long-haired teens from its rolled-down windows. A beat-up sedan sports the bumper sticker, "So many pedestrians, so little time," as its driver listens to a group named - appropriately - Megadeth. · Cars move slowly, slowly, their drivers and passengers gaping with romantic desire at others passing in the opposite direction. It's a motorized version of an 18th-century courting promenade. A promenade of teen-age lust, and boredom. A shiny black truck on Paul Bunyan-sized tires towers above the cars. Its red-haired driver, in a Iron Maiden T-shirt, affects a cool, detached expression, then cranks his stereo above the din. Acushnet Avenue. The only game in town. The only game, teens say, in the whole area. It is certainly not the dating forum that concerned parents would select for their children. Junior high girls wobble uncertainly on stiletto heels past 30-year-old men who reek of liquor.
