What better way is there to celebrate February 14th than dining, drinking and hearing speeches? Perhaps tonight will inspire a scene in the world’s next great romantic comedy. Or maybe a few of those awards will work as aphrodisiacs. Who knows? It’s a night for celebrating writing and romance. We’re happy to be back at the elegant Edison Ballroom with its own romantic and colorful history. The Edison got its start as a music club in the 1930s, featuring Swing bands. Then, in the 1990s it became The Supper Club, hosting everyone from Bob Dylan to Tony Bennett. In the interim, it was the Edison Theatre, home to many Broadway shows, including the infamous “Oh! Calcutta!” a show which has absolutely nothing in common with tonight’s awards. We hope. We’re thrilled that you’re here to celebrate some of the best work that our members have produced in the past year. But don’t let this be your only way of engaging with the Writers Guild. We encourage you to become involved with the WGAE’s committees and caucuses as well as its activities and organizing campaigns. Congratulations to all tonight’s winners and nominees. I’d like to give my heartfelt appreciation to our brilliant host Larry Wilmore and all our presenters. I’d also like to thank the show’s amazing Executive Producer John Marshall and the rest of our writing team, the incredibly dedicated Awards Committee and tireless WGAE staff, particularly Marsha Seeman, Dana Weissman, Nancy Hathorne and Jason Gordon, the crew, all tonight’s volunteers, my fellow Council members, my very patient husband Chris and everyone else involved in making tonight’s show possible. Enjoy the food, drink up and have a great time! February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES.
