My Mediasite: Use YouTube to Create and Edit Closed Captions Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a set of principles ensuring that all students have equal opportunity to learn. All videos that you share with your students should include closed captions (CC) to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0). Captioning videos may seem cost- or time-prohibitive, but it’s free and relatively simple with YouTube. This document describes how to (1) edit automatic CC in YouTube, (2) download a caption file, and (3) import captions into My Mediasite.
Upload Video Files to YouTube
1. Go to youtube.com. 2. Sign in with your Google username and password. 3. Follow the YouTube Help instructions about uploading videos (goo.gl/a8m3V3).
1. Edit Automatic Closed Captions in YouTube
1. Click your YouTube profile icon in the top right corner.
2. Click My channel in the menu.
3. On your channel page, click the video to open.
4. On the video page, click the Edit Video button below the video to the right.
5. Click the Subtitles/CC link in the top right.

6. Click the automatically generated English subtitle link under the Published header.
7. On the Transcribe and set timings page, click the Edit button in the top right.
8. Below the video player, you will find a timeline that includes automatic subtitles and a waveform of your audio. As you play the video, track the red time indicator as it scrubs across the timeline.
9. To edit subtitles, click the box containing the text in the timeline, then click the corresponding box on the left hand list of subtitles. Edit any incorrect text including grammar and punctuation.
10. After updating all subtitles, click the Publish edits button in the top right.

2. Download Closed Caption File
1. Open the edited subtitles.
Example: English
2. Click the Actions button, then select any file format.
Recommended: .srt format
3. The caption file will download to your computer.

3. Upload Closed Caption File to My Mediasite
1. Go to uhd.edu/mymediasite
2. Enter your UHD Username and Password.
3. Click the presentation where you’d like to upload the caption file that you downloaded from YouTube.
4. Click the Edit tab (top).
5. Click the Delivery tab (middle).
6. Click the Audio Transcriptions box.
7. Click the Manual Upload radio button.
8. Click the Select a file button and browse to the downloaded YouTube caption file.
9. Click the Save button.
10. Whenever the video is played, you will find the CC button to the right of the volume controller.
Click it to toggle the captions on and off.
