Trillville's 'Some Cut' Shoots up the Charts
Trillville's 'Some Cut' Shoots Up the Charts Written by Robert ID1040 Tuesday, 22 March 2005 07:11 - On the strength of breakthrough momentum resulting from a well received, wildly popular video (a Top Ten Countdown entry on BET's "106th & Park," FULL rotation on MTV2, HEAVY rotation on BET's "Rap City," active play on MTV, etc.) and enthusiastic radio spins (on everything from Urban Mainstream and Top 40 Mainstream, to R&B Mainstream stations across the country), steadily rising BME Recordings/Warner Bros. rap/hip-hop act TRILLVILLE has snagged a multi-chart breakthrough with their latest smash hit, "Some Cut" (featuring Cutty). TRILLVILLE -- comprised of rappers Don P., Dirty Mouth and Lil L.A. -- enjoys radio success with "Some Cut" as the single has sprinted up The R&R Urban Mainstream Chart (#2), Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Billboard Airplay Monitor chart (#2) and Rap Billboard Airplay Monitor (#2 with a bullet). Easily delivering on the promise of their debut hit, "Neva Eva" (culled from their gold-certified "The King Of Crunk & BME Recordings Present Trillville & Lil Scrappy"), the popular trio continues to make significant career inroads -- all while holding down a promotional tour schedule that has included everything from interviews/performances on popular music shows like MTV's "Direct Effect" and BET's "Rap City," and culminating in high-profile upcoming appearances on "Soul Train," MTV's "Spring Break ''05" and BET's "Spring Break" specials. "Some Cut" even resulted in a #3 slot on the Moviso MasterTone chart (compiled from the sales of MasterTones on AT&T, Cingular, T-Mobile, Ringster Plus, Samsung FunClub and Virgin Mobile). -

Outkast'd and Claimin' True
OUTKAST’D AND CLAIMIN’ TRUE: THE LANGUAGE OF SCHOOLING AND EDUCATION IN THE SOUTHERN HIPHOP COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE by JOYCELYN A. WILSON (Under the direction of Judith Preissle) ABSTRACT The hiphop community of practice encompasses a range of aesthetic values, norms, patterns, and traditions. Because of its growth over the last three decades, the community has come to include regionallyspecific networks linked together by community members who engage in meaningful practices and experiences. Expressed through common language ideologies, these practices contribute to the members’ communal and individual identity while simultaneously providing platforms to articulate social understandings. Using the constructs of community of practice and social networks, this research project is an interpretive study grounded primarily in the use of lyrics and interviews to investigate the linguistic patterns and language norms of hip hop’s southern network, placing emphasis on the Atlanta, Georgia southern hiphop network. The two main goals are to gain an understanding of the role of school in the cultivation of the network and identify the network’s relationship to schooling and education. The purpose is to identify initial steps for implementing a hiphop pedagogy in curriculum and instruction. Get Crunk! The Performative Resistance of Atlanta Hip-Hop Party Music Kevin C. Holt Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 ©2018 Kevin C. Holt All rights reserved ABSTRACT Get Crunk! The Performative Resistance of Atlanta Hip-Hop Party Music Kevin C. Holt This dissertation offers an aesthetic and historical overview of crunk, a hip- hop subgenre that took form in Atlanta, Georgia during the late 1990s. Get Crunk! is an ethnography that draws heavily on methodologies from African-American studies, musicological analysis, and performance studies in order to discuss crunk as a performed response to the policing of black youth in public space in the 1990s. Crunk is a subgenre of hip-hop that emanated from party circuits in the American southeast during the 1990s, characterized by the prevalence of repeating chanted phrases, harmonically sparse beats, and moderate tempi. The music is often accompanied by images that convey psychic pain, i.e. contortions of the body and face, and a moshing dance style in which participants thrash against one another in spontaneously formed epicenters while chanting along with the music. Crunk’s ascension to prominence coincided with a moment in Atlanta’s history during which inhabitants worked diligently to redefine Atlanta for various political purposes. Some hoped to recast the city as a cosmopolitan tourist destination for the approaching new millennium, while others sought to recreate the city as a beacon of Southern gentility, an articulation of the city’s mythologized pre-Civil War existence; both of these positions impacted Atlanta’s growing hip-hop community, which had the twins goals of drawing in black youth tourism and creating and marketing an easily identifiable Southern style of hip-hop for mainstream consumption; the result was crunk.
