Arts Week cont….. Year 2 had a fantastic trip on Wednesday. They began the day with a visit to the Empire cinema where they watched The Jungle Book. The children loved watching the film describing it as 'awesome, it was a really good film!' and felt like VIPs having the whole screen to themselves. After a short walk they spent the afternoon in Sutton Park, with a Ranger, exploring the surrounding area and enjoyed various activities. They particularly enjoyed the exercise where they had to lead a blindfolded partner to a tree. They then had to use touch to recognise and remember it before being led away and trying and find it again. Following this, the children explored the park and learnt about different plants, whilst making a visual 'postcard' of their journey. Despite the chilly conditions the children had a thoroughly enjoyable day out. Year 3 have been studying the work of William Morris during Arts Week. They worked with Mrs Marchant to begin a new appliqued piano cover, Each child designed their own tile for the border and the classes are working together to complete the de- sign. They used the influence of William Morris to create their own art work canvasses. On Wednesday they had a particularly busy day. It began with a workshop led by Messy Church based at St James', based on the story of Daniel and the Lions. The children thought about the British values that could be identified and then created some really beautiful lion masks to remind them of the story. Other workshops followed, delivered by King Edwards Handsworth. The first session was history based where the children used symbols to record facts about King Edward and then designed and made their own crowns with decorations to represent important facts about themselves. After this they took part in a DT session where the children made medals and the afternoon was completed with a music workshop when the children learnt a song about King Edward and created their own verse and actions! What a busy day! Year 4 have had an incredibly exciting and inspiring Arts week. The week commenced with the children creating their own ostinato using a variety of musical instruments. They then learnt about renowned British artist, Banksy, produced arguments for and against street art and present- ed their arguments in a debate. They used his art work to inspire their own acrylic canvasses, which were displayed as part of our Art Gallery. They also took part in a 1920s dance workshop, a bagpipes workshop and visited the Barber Institute where they learnt further information about famous British artists. The highlight of the week was taking part in a Konflux Drama workshop, 'A Play in a Day', based on British culture. The children enjoyed finding out about the history of Britain and how certain traditions in this country came about. They put on an amazing performance, speaking clearly and eloquently and remembering their lines (despite having very little time to rehearse). We couldn't have been more proud. Well done, children! What an incredible time the children in Year 5 have had this week! Their feet literally haven't touched the ground in what has been a fun-filled and jam-packed few days. Monday involved learning about the British modern artists Elmo Hood and Emma G, using their techniques to create their own self portraits as well as performing with puppets under the guidance of the talented puppeteer, Andi Markham. On Tuesday the pupils listened to music by various British artists ranging from Coldplay to Queen. The children compared the dynamics, tempo and rhythm within these pieces and confidently discussed how and why this music can make us feel proud. Yesterday was extremely busy but heaps of fun - the children danced hip hop to MC Hammer's 'Can't Touch This' and enjoyed abstract water colour painting at The Barber Institute of Fine Art taking ideas and influences from several British artists whose work is displayed there. The behaviour of the children whilst at the museum was exemplary and our guide and teacher for the day commented on the deeper level responses and ideas that they were able to give during the visit. Of course no themed week focussing on British talent would be complete without a mention of our greatest playwright, WIlliam Shakespeare, and today the Y5 children were able to finish on a high by participating in a workshop based on ’The Tempest’. They thoroughly enjoyed learning about the themes within this story and participating in the drama activities. We would like to say well done to all of the children for making this a truly brilliant week and we hope you have enjoyed it as much as we have. Arts Week cont….. To celebrate our Arts Week we have been exploring a variety of British artists in Year 6 and also researching and writing about how the arts have changed in Britain from the 1950s to present day. On Monday, after celebrating our school’s talents in assembly, we explored the work of Banksy and the children created their own Banksy inspired pieces which were fabulous. In the afternoon we were fortunate enough to be taught a 1950s dance routine by Mrs Swann. On Tuesday, we explored British Values through a poetry workshop called ‘Paper Chase’ which the children really enjoyed. Also throughout the week, we have been looking at other artists such as Bridget Riley and our canvasses were created using the inspiration of Julian Opie; the children drew their own self portraits using his same iconic style. Wednesday saw the children enjoying a Messy Church activity ses- sion where they created boxes and medals to help them celebrate their talents and skills, re-enacting a story from the bible exploring how we are all special.
