He entered the 1990s as a leading player in British fiction; by his early forties, the young talent had grown into a dominant force. Following his debut The Rachel Papers (1973), he subsidised his fictional output through the 1970s with journalistic work, notably as literary editor at the New Statesman. -

Based on extracts from the novel, it has been shown that money has led to the rise and fall of the protagonist. Indeed, with money gained from immoral sources, he was used to smoking, drinking, eating junk food, and enjoying nude magazines. Disillusioned later on, he has learnt how to use money to give meaning to his own life. This clearly depicts how, through the power of money, contemporary man has indulged in addiction, overdrinking, and pornography. It is hoped that the warning of Amis will be understood worldwide so that money will no more be considered a predominant factor of power's homogenization of the individual. Martin Amis As a nonfiction writer, Amis has explored a range of topics including politics, pop culture, sports, and literature. He received the James Tait Black Memorial prize for his 2000 memoir Experience. His most recent collection The Rub of Time: Bellow, Thursday 6 June 2019 Nabokov, Hitchens, Travolta, Trump: Essays and Reportage, 1994-2017 investigates many subjects of American culture. The shadow kills the growth.” This Oedipal principle applies to all sorts of professions, but few more so than the literary one. It’s not unheard of for the child of an author to try his hand at writing. Stephen King’s two sons are writers, and so is one of John Updike’s. Hilma Wolitzer’s daughter Meg is a novelist, as is Anita Desai’s daughter Kiran, whose second book just won the Booker Prize — an award that has so far eluded her mother. But writers’ offspring tend to go into the family business with far less regularity than, say, the children of doctors or lawyers, and it seldom happens that over the long haul, and in the deepening shade, the younger equals or outstrips the elder — the way that Anthony Trollope, to take a famous example, bested his mother, Fanny. The exception these days is the curious writerly firm of Amis & Amis, founded by Kingsley, who died in 1995, and now run by his son Martin. Kingsley Amis, an indelible figure in British letters, is the subject of an immense and sympathetic new biography by Zachary Leader (published this month in the United States) that has already caused a stir in England both by reminding readers of how funny Kingsley could be and because of its frankness about his personal life. -

According to critical tradition, satire relies on a normative background to do its work of correction and moral retribution. What happens when those norms are fraying, or absent altogether? Martin Amis’s Money (1984), a key text of the Reagan- Thatcher years, stages this aesthetic and political aporia with coruscating wit and an apocalyptic atmosphere. The relations between satire and value, text and norm, enter a crisis that is morally alarming but artistically productive. * Unfortunately, it has a dehumanized look. But that is not the satirist’s fault. Walter Benjamin All of us are excited by what we most deplore. Martin Amis SUPERACTIVE, JOHN Satire, like many cultural categories, blurs and wavers when you try to look straight at it. To reflect on the concept and review the critical literature lately dedicated to it is to find uncertainty about its boundaries and definition; its function and effect; its major instances; and, as we shall see, its historical conditions of possibility. But if satire is a diffuse concept it also remains a widely diffused practice. Modern satire has occupied diverse genres and locations: theatre, cinema, television, cartoons and text in the press. But it is to a prose fiction that this essay will dedicate its attention.1 In any attempt to theorize the fate of satire in contemporary fiction, Martin Amis’s 1984 novel 1 Money is essential evidence. One of the most influential English novels of the last few decades, it appears to show a modern satirist at the height of his powers. -

ATLANTIS 26.2 (December 2004): 87–96 ISSN 0210-6124 Through the Looking Glass: America in Martin Amis’s Money: A Suicide Note Carlos Silva Campañón Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona [email protected] Martin Amis’s self-sufficient, well-wrought fiction demands a comprehensive perspective which highlights the relationship and interconnections between its constituent parts. The writer himself has made this clear through his emphasis on the indissolubility of form and meaning in a narrative which attempts to combine the aesthetic quality with an interpretation of the historical present. It is the purpose of this essay to develop an in-depth analysis of a significant motif, America, in one of Amis’s most representative novels, Money: A Suicide Note (1984). Through a formal, symbolical and historical reading of this motif, I will trace how these different readings support each other and open a window to some of Amis’s central tropes and topics, such as duality, otherness and the nature of the self in the context of the twentieth century. Key Words: self, dualism, otherness, postmodernism, America, Martin Amis, contemporary fiction. Martin Amis’s writing has been defined by Victoria Alexander as “a queer hybrid of a Nabokovian and Bellovian world-views” (Alexander 1994: 78). By this, the critic means that it is a fiction supported and enhanced by the tension between the formal and moral aspects of his prose. Through the recurrent presence of a fixed repertoire of motifs and thematic lines, we can simultaneously observe the workings of the aesthete in search of the perfect pattern and design and hear the musings of the social commentator and satirist. -
