The title you have chosen sums up everything in a nutshell. ‘‘ The Glories of Lourdes ’”’—how many promises are contained in these words! And you do not disappoint the reader’s expectation. The origin of our shrines, the marvels which accompany and follow the Apparitions of the Immaculate Virgin, the prodigies which the piety of the faithful works in answer to the miracle of Divine power wrought by the intercession of the Blessed Virgin, the whole world hastening to the Grotto of Massabielle and multiplying the manifestations of faith capable of moving mountains, since they very often touch the hearts most hardened to supernatural influence— this is what you represent and depict in a series vil Vili THE GLORIES OF LOURDES of pictures animated with colours of life the most intense, and, I might add, the most glorious. J. M. ROUSSEIL, Priest. xi PREFACE TO ENGLISH TRANSLATION : Tuis work was first published in France last year, on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the Apparitions at Lourdes. The author, in his Preface, gives the reasons which led him to add another book to the many already written about Lourdes. However, the fact that the first edition was exhausted in eight months, and the chorus of praise with which it was greeted by the Catholic press in France, seem to contradict the author’s modest estimate of his work, and to show that it has not proved super- fluous. Moreover, it has won the praise of His Holiness Pius X., of two Cardinals, and of the Bishops of Perpignan, Tarbes, and Pamiers. The letters of these Bishops were given in full in the French edition, but reasons of space have unfortu- nately compelled us to omit two of them, as well as a long list of French journals and reviews which gave this work very high praise. The notice from that important periodical, L’Ami du Clergé, omitted here for the same reasons, described this book as a brilliant work of science, apologetics, and eloquence ’ (October 29, 1908). xii PREFACE TO ENGLISH TRANSLATION xiii Moreover, by the advice of authority, it has been translated into the four principal languages of Europe, in the hope that, as it had met with so favourable a reception in France, it might prove interesting to a wider circle of readers in other countries, as giving a complete history on broad lines of the famous Grotto of Lourdes during the last fifty years. Though there are many books in English on this subject, yet ‘in the case of a sanctuary still prolific in wonders, later books have certain natural advantages over earlier ones; . each year adds to the number and variety of the marvels effected there.’* Many, therefore, will read this book with pleasure who have never had the opportunity of visiting Lourdes themselves, but are interested in the wonderful manifestations of Our Lady’s power there. Again, there are many Catholics who have observed with sorrow the relentless persecution which the Church is now undergoing in France. They will perhaps learn from these pages that there is a bright side to the picture, and that, though the forces of Atheism and Irreligion seem at the present moment to have overthrown the Catholic religion in that country, yet there are unseen influences at work which will eventually counteract and frustrate the unjust and ruthless policy of the French Govern- ment, and lead to a revival of Catholic faith and practice in that once Christian nation. SCHOEPFER. ‘The world hath agéd fifty years Since Mary first her child did greet, And Bernadette, with ravished ears, First heard those heavenly accents sweet.’ L. FEILLET, LouRDES, since Heaven first visited it, has won a world-wide and lasting fame. Yet many are not aware that for the last half-century this Grotto, which fascinates men despite modern criticism, has inspired over 200 volumes in prose and verse (not counting a host of articles in magazines and weekly and daily papers), partly hostile, but mostly in defence of it, while many are really interesting either from an historical or critical or scientific point of view, apart from the literary merit of many of them.

Polistena “Gentlemen, whether you like it or not, the feeling for religion has in the last six years regained a power which no one could have foreseen.”[1] A member of France’s Chamber of Deputies made this surprising declaration in 1837, noting the dramatic religious revival that had taken place in France in recent years. One particular religious event, a Mariophanic occurrence, may have contributed to this phenomenon. It also led to a new iconography for the Virgin Mary (fig. 1).     Our Lady of Lourdes SAINT OF THE DAY 11-02-2021 On February 11, 1858, at the Massabielle cave in Lourdes, the Blessed Virgin appeared to the 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous, an illiterate peasant, poor and sickly, who on that day had gone to collect wood along the gravel bank of the Gave de Pau. It was the first of a series of eighteen Marian apparitions, which would end on July 16th. They contained a strong call to conversion, anticipating the Mariophany to the three little shepherds of Fatima. "I saw a lady dressed in white. She wore a white dress, a white veil, a blue belt and a yellow rose on each foot": so Bernadette described her first vision. Seeing the lady make the sign of the cross, the astonished girl recited the rosary. The Virgin, who still hadn't revealed her identity, then made a beckoning sign but Bernadette dared not come closer and saw her vanish. Overcoming her parents' initial disapproval, the girl returned to the cave three days later and threw holy water towards the vision: the lady smiled and bowed her head. On the third apparition, the lady spoke for the first time: "I do not promise to make you happy in this world, but in the next". And she added: "Do you want the grace to be able to come here for fifteen days?" Meanwhile, the news of the apparitions spread and the number of people who accompanied Bernadette to the cave increased. On February 21st the girl was questioned harshly by Commissioner Jacomet, to whom she replied that she had seen Aqueró, "That one there." On the eighth apparition, the lady entrusted her with a crucial message: "Penance! Penance! Penance! Pray to God for sinners! Go and kiss the earth in penance for sinners".

    8. Die Marienerscheinungen von Lourdes Vom 11. Februar 1858 an soll der vierzehnjährigen Bernadette Soubirous bei der Grotte von Massabielle bei einem Fluss (Südwestfrankreich nahe der Grenze zu Spanien) wiederholt die Mutter Gottes erschienen sein. Bernadette, ein kränkliches Mädchen aus ärmsten Verhältnissen, war Holz sammeln, als ihr eine wunderschöne Dame in der Grotte erschien. Die Erscheinung soll weiß gekleidet und blau gegürtet gewesen sein. Die Grotte von Massabielle war zu jener Zeit ein Ort, an dem unter anderem Müll verbrannt und Schweine gehütet wurden. Bernadette selbst nannte die Erscheinung nie „Maria“ oder „Muttergottes“, sie sprach nur von der „Dame“ oder dem „einsamen Fräulein“. Während einer ihrer Visionen legte Bernadette auf Wunsch der „Dame“ eine Quelle in der Grotte frei, deren Wasser bis heute als heilkräftig gilt. Jährlich pilgern bis sechs Millionen Besucher nach Lourdes und Tausende nehmen – im festen Glauben an eine mögliche Heilung – Bäder im Quellwasser. Untersuchungen konnten keine außergewöhnliche Mineralstoffzusammensetzung des Quellwassers feststellen, es hat aber Trinkwasserqualität. Die kirchlichen und weltlichen Behörden sahen diese Erscheinungen, die am 16. Juli 1858 endeten, zunächst mit Argwohn an und versuchten, die Menschenaufläufe zu verhindern. Erst nach einiger Zeit glaubten auch Priester und Bischöfe dem Mädchen. Als der Dorfpfarrer Dominique Peyramale Bernadette aufforderte, die Erscheinung nach ihrem Namen zu fragen, überbrachte Bernadette als Antwort „Ich bin die Unbefleckte Empfängnis“ – ein theologischer Terminus, der erst kurz zuvor vom Papst dogmatisiert worden war. Der Dompfarrer meinte, dass Bernadette als ungebildete Tochter eines verarmten Müllers diesen Begriff kaum habe kennen können. Darauf war er von der Authentizität der Erscheinung überzeugt. Um die Grotte herum entstanden nach und nach mehrere großen Kirchen, Kapellen und Plätzen, um die wachsenden Pilgerströme aufzunehmen.

Unusually, this year constitutes the middle of a triennium (2007-2009) dedicated to the promotion of earth sciences and their importance in achieving sustainable development. In addition to the IUGS, the IYPE Project has 12 Founding Partners and 26 Associate Partners, all of which are international, regional or major national organisations with areas of expertise ranging from geology through soil science to meteorology. The Project’s ten research themes have been chosen for their societal relevance, multidisciplinary nature and ‘outreach’ potential. These are: Groundwater: reservoir for a thirsty planet?; Hazards: minimizing risk, maximizing awareness; Earth and Health: building a safer environment; Climate Change: the ‘stone tape’; Resource Issues: towards sustainable use; Megacities: going deeper, building safer; Deep Earth: from crust to core; Ocean: abyss of time; Soil: Earth’s living skin; and Earth and Life: origins of diversity. (The ‘stone tape’ refers to an ongoing study of ancient sedimentary rocks to determine how the Earth’s climate has changed over geological time.) The ‘outreach’ aspect is an essential feature of the IYPE, in that it will target decision makers, the voting public and the 400,000 geoscientists around the globe ‘who need help in using their knowledge for the benefit of the world’s population’.

In the second module, we tried to immerse ourselves in the peculiarities of Christian spirituality. In the third module, our thinking focused on the sources of Christian spirituality. The aim of this fourth module is to help us discover the missionary presence of the Church in the world. However, this is no ordinary presence, for the Church is in the world in order to evangelise. This means that the Church is sent by the Lord, with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, to proclaim the good news until the Lord comes back at the end of the time. So, in this context, every baptized person is a missionary, which means “one who is sent” By his actions, his words, his life choices, the Christian gives to the world a 'surplus': the presence of Jesus who said: "I am with you until the end of the world". In this fourth module, we will first find a presentation of the text from the Gospel of St. Matthew (28, 16-20) in which the disciples are sent on a mission. The Lord asked them to have three attitudes: - To be convinced and convincing disciples . - To have a mystical and spiritual dimension to their lives - To adopter an ethical standard of behaviour. Secondly, I will try to show how the message of Lourdes, eminently missionary, informs the mission of the Hospitaliers of today. May these few pages help you to live better the grace you have received : the grave of being a Hospitalier in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes.

One of the striking aspects of the appearances of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette is the repeated request of Bernadette to know the identity of our Blessed Mother, who replied with a silent smile until the Sixteenth Apparition, on the Feast of the Annunciation, March 25, 1858. During the Sixteenth Apparition, Bernadette, urged by her parish priest, asked the beautiful lady her name four times. Finally, after the fourth request, Our Blessed Mother replied: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” After revealing her name, the Virgin Mary did not speak to Bernadette again. Her name summarized and completed all that she had spoken to Bernadette and had asked of her. 2. The response is also striking in that the Virgin Mary identifies herself with an event: her conception in the womb of Saint Ann without any stain of original sin. In fact, her parish priest had asked her the beautiful lady’s name, in order to be confirmed in doing what our Blessed Mother asked of him through Bernadette: “Go ask the priests to have the people come here in procession and tell them to have a chapel built,” (Patricia A.
