Translations

Dignare, O Domine Vouchsafe, O Lord

Dignare, o Domine, Vouchsafe, O Lord, die isto sine peccato. to keep us this day without sin. Miserere nostri domine. Have mercy upon us. Fiat misericordia tua, super nos, Let thy mercy lighten upon us, quemadmodum speravimus in te. as our trust is in thee.

Ah! mio cor Ah! my heart

Ah! mio cor, Ah! my heart, schernito sei. you are deceived. Stelle, dei, nume d’amore! Stars, gods, god of love! Traditore, t’amo tanto. Traitor, I love you much. puoi lasciarmi sola in pianto? How can you leave me alone in tears? O dei! Puoi lasciarmi, perchè? Oh gods! How can you leave me, why?

Ah scostati!... Smanie implacabili Ah, get away!... Turmoil inconsolable

Ah, scostati Ah, get away! Paventa il tristo effeto Beware the sad effect d’un disperato affetto! of a desperate love! Chiudi quelle finestre. Shut those windows. Odio la luce, odio l’aria che spiro, I hate the light, I hate that air that I breathe, odio me stessa! I hate myself! Chi schernisce il mio duol? Who mocks my pain? Chi mi consola? Who would console me? Deh, fuggi, per pietà! Ah, leave, for pity’s sake! Lasciami sola. leave me alone.

Smanie implacabili che m’agitate Turmoil inconsolable which agitates dentro quest’anima più non cessate, inside this soul, do not cease finché l’angoscia mi fa morir. until this anguish makes me die.

Esempio misero d’amor funesto, A miserable example of disastrous love darò all’Eumenidi se viva resto I’ll give the Furies – if I remain alive – col suono orribile de’ miei sospir. with the horrible sound of my sighs.

Lied der Mignon Mignon’s Song

Nur wer die kennt Only one who knows longing weiß was ich leide! knows what I suffer! Allein und abgetrennt Alone and cut off von aller Freude from all joy, seh’ ich an’s Firmament I look into the firmament, nach jener Seite. from yonder side. Ach! der mich liebt und kennt, Ah! he who knows and loves me ist in der Weite. is far away. Es schwindelt mir, It makes me dizzy, es brennt mein Eingeweide. it burns my insides.

Lachen und Weinen Laughing and Weeping

Lachen und Weinen zu jeglicher Stunde Laughing and weeping at every hour ruht bei der Lieb auf so mancherlei Grunde. are a part of love for so many reasons. Morgens lacht ich vor Lust; In the mornings, I laughed for joy; und warum ich nun weine and why I now weep bei des Abendes Scheine, In the evening’s glow, Ist mir selb’ nicht bewusst. I myself don’t even know.

Weinen und Lachen zu jeglicher Stunde Weeping and laughing at every hour ruht bei der Lieb auf so mancherlei Grunde. are a part of love for so many reasons. Abends weint ich vor Schmerz; In the evenings, I wept out of sorrow; und warum du erwachen and why you can wake up kannst am Morgen mit Lachen, In the morning with laughter, muss ich dich fragen, o Herz. I must ask you, oh heart.

Rastlose Liebe Restless Love

Dem Schnee, dem Regen, Against the snow, against the rain, dem Wind entgegen, against the wind, im Dampf der Klüfte, In the midst of the ravines, durch Nebeldüfte, through the smells of fog, immer zu! Immer zu! always onward! Always onward! Ohne Rast und Ruh! Without rest and peace!

Lieber durch Leiden Through suffering möcht’ ich mich schlagen, I would rather fight als so viel Freuden than so many joys des Lebens ertragen. of life to endure. Alle das Neigen All the inclining von Herzen zu Herzen, of heart to heart, ach, wie so eigen ah, how so curiously schaffet das Schmerzen! it creates pain! Wie, soll ich fliehen? What, shall I flee? Wälderwärts ziehen? To the forest go? Alles vergebens! All in vain! Krone des Lebens, Crown of life, glück ohne Ruh, happiness without peace, Liebe, bist du! love, you are!
