Their debut CD…because rock and roll isn't pretty, called "a blues-infused, swinging calypso rock wonder" by Girlfriend Magazine and recommended for adventurous rock stations by Billboard, is currently receiving airplay on over 120 stations world-wide, and is available through Ladyslipper Music at 800-634-6044, Harmony Ridge Music at 800-611-4698 and Goldenrod Music at 517-484-1712. Combining imaginative and intelligent lyrics, the Tubes' original music is known for its provocative humor and politically savvy satire. The band cover an eclectic array of songs which showcase six women's diverse musical interests and influences. Smart, funny, and energetic, the women play quirky and unique arrangements of both classic and obscure soul, rhythm and blues, calypso, reggae and retro disco tunes. The Fallopian Tubes, named for the tuba which helps to create the band's signature sound, are comprised of Toffer Ross on tuba and bass guitar, guitarist Laurie "Slimy" Ryan, vocalists Lori Keegan and Whitney Bryant, drummer Nancy Witt and Nancy Crockford on mandolin, violin and steel drums. Formed in 1980, this ground-breaking women's band was first considered one of the first punk bands, played at both the first and second WMNF-FM Tropical Heatwave, Ybor City's Avon Theatre, the Italian Club's artsfusion, the Herizon Club in upstate New York and the Michigan Women's Music Festival, as well as nightclubs and concert halls in their native Florida. After a seven year hiatus, the Tubes returned in 1992. They perform locally at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center Off Center Theater, selling out annual weekend shows for the past three years. The band plays at Club More, Tampa Theatre, Franklin Street Mall, Skipper's Smokehouse, the Cuban Club, El Pasaje Plaza, Club 402 and the Hyde Park Café. They have been featured at music festivals from Key West to Pennsylvania, where they headlined at the Blue Skies Festival with Janis Ian, Cheryl Wheeler, BETTY, the Burn Sisters and other icons of modern folk and rock. They have appeared with performers as diverse as Richie Haven, Lester Chambers, comic Kate Clinton, Romanovsky & Philips, and the original "bitchin' babe" Christine Lavin. Their CD has been picked up by several syndicated radio shows, and been favorably reviewed from London (Diva) to Sydney, Australia (Noise Queen).
