DOUGLASS CLUB AWARDS “GOOD CITIZENS” AT LOCAL SCHOOLS-- Following a 103-year tradition, members of The Douglass Club this year awarded 59 “Good Citizenship” certificates to students in four local elementary schools. The aim of the awards is to foster good character, consisting of: respect for self and others, personal responsibility, and positive contributions to school and community. In addition to the certificates, 13 students received monetary awards of $25. Recipients of the certificates and awards were nominated by teachers and administra- tors of the schools, and submitted in writing to officers of The Douglass Club. Participating schools were: Blackshear, Pecan Springs, Norman, and Velma Overton. One high school stu- dent, Jeremiah Greenwood Marshall, a Pflugerville High graduate, received a scholarship in the amount of $500. The Douglass Club conducts fund-raising activities each year in order to provide incentives such as these to students.
