PRESIDENTS REPORT

The 2006/2007 has been another successful season for the club.

In September the new all weather training facility was officially opened by the Rt. Hon. Jim Anderton to a pleasing crowd of Sydenham Cricket and Hockey members. Afterwards morning tea was provided for members, friends and guests. The complex now complete has been the project of both clubs and our members are all greatly indebted to the hard work of the organisers who have had the foresight and vision to create a marvelous facility 0that will be enjoyed by children and adults alike for many years to come. On behalf of the club I would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to Dave Gallop, The Sydenham Trust and all those from hockey that have made this possible.

On the pitch the club had another good season with the seniors securing the one day competition for the first time in eleven years. The team also preformed very well in the trophy finishing the round robin in second place, a few points behind St Albans. The team will now travel to Auckland to compete in the club national tournament next year. We will all be wishing the seniors well and have every confidence in their ability to compete to the highest possible standards.

The club would also like to congratulate Mike Shrimpton on being awarded Canterbury Coach of the year. Mikes dedication and commitment to club has been outstanding and we are now seeing the benefits of this.

The committee has also had a busy year which sadly has been exasperated by poor attendances at meetings and a general apathy to hard work. Things were not helped by the resignation of our treasurer at Christmas. However Bede Oulaghan has taken on the role and my hope is that he will continue as treasurer next season. I would like to thank Ivan Thomson for chairing the committee, James McKenzie our secretary and all those that helped out last season.

On behalf of the committee I would like to thank our scorer Brent and our friendly bar lady Melissa for your contributions to the club. Also thanks very much to Darren Hickson for organising a BBQ and portable pavilion for the one day finale at Elmwood park. During the xmas break the seniors also organised a working bee down at the club unprompted by the committee. This was very much appreciated and is great to see the pride that people are obviously taking in the Club.

Looking forward to next season there are some very important decisions the club needs to take in regard to our pavilion. It is now apparent that Rugby will not be joining us in the near future but never the less it is important that we move forward with the proposed up grades that have been talked about. There are now some concept plans available for consideration and buy the time of the AGM it is my hope that they can be ratified. Of concern to the club is the council’s decision to remove another pitch from Sydenham Park. There is a sub committee of myself, Bede and David Heard who are working on alternative proposals and our hope is that we can convince the council that the status quo is the only workable model. I hope to be able to update you all on progress at the AGM.

Finally on behalf of the committee I wish you all a safe and prosperous winter and look forward to seeing you all soon.

Michael Pearcy President

MEN’S CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

Hello all

Thanks to Ken Julian for his work setting up and maintaining the club website. This provided an opportunity to see how players from all the grades were performing throughout the season and a valuable source of information.

Individual players of note scoring centuries this season were Sean Heather, Elliot Hitchings, and Ken Julian. Ben Williams had an impressive season with 4 centuries, and 4 fifties scoring a massive 945 runs for the season. Topping the bowling honours were Abraham Atherton (38), Chad Romano (37), Craig Ross (35), and Ben Rapson (30). The best individual performance came from Ben Williams (182) & Tim Bloomfield (6-16)

A big thank you to Pearcy & Ivan for their tireless work in the day to day running of the club.

Thanks must also go to all the captains for their efforts in organizing their players each Saturday making sure they have enough balls and have their whites nice and clean.

Feedback from other clubs & umpires has also shown that Sydenham has greatly improved its image with excellent quality pitches, practice facilities & the lunches put on for the Premier home games.

Another highlight of the season was the opening of the new practice facilities which far exceed anything else available at other clubs. Big thanks must go to Dave Gallop and the trust for their work in raising the funds for this.

Having missed out on the one day final last season it was great to see the senior team not only reach the final again, but this time convincingly beat the much loved OBCC. Special note must be made of coach, Mike Shrimpton for his tireless efforts throughout the season pushing the players to better themselves, and also the visible (and vocal) supporters camped on the sidelines putting to shame the few opposition supporters.

Hope you are all enjoying your winter, and best of luck for next season

SENIOR MEN TEAM REPORT

The club can look back on the performances of the senior team with a great deal of satisfaction after being elevated back into the senior competition from a season playing suburban cricket. The challenge was clearly with the club to perform at this level and retain its position at this level in the forth coming seasons. There was little need for motivation.

We were fortunate to have the services of Sunnier Chan and Amandeep Singh and the capable professionalism of Sean Heather to help bolster the strength in the team and provide support to club stalwarts like Chad Romano and Craig Ross. Without doubt the high light of the season was the progress made with our one day game and to have won this competition was a great effort. On the way we were able to over come the demons that East Shirley in the semi-final who have caused us problems in previous encounters and this certainly gave us ether psychological lift necessary to achieve even bigger things. Few will forget the occasion and the celebrations that followed.

The final against Old Boys on their home ground was the best performance of the season and a fitting finale to the season and a tribute to those who worked so hard to make it happen, both players and officials. From the side line I watched a team that looked confident, dominate and professional. It was a complete performance and a marker for the future.

Few would also argue that the results of the two day competition were not a fair reflection of our true capabilities. In the early part of the season we were close to getting maximum points in the early matches and then to be thwarted against for maximum points Old Boys when the covers were not used was a major blow to our chances. The two day competition is the best test of the all round skills of a team and next season I expect the final result to be better than the 2006-07 season.

Our progress was further blighted when Andrew Fullerton Smith was side lined with serious injury to his thumb and then the recurring injury to Chad Romano’s knee also hurt our chances and progress. With out high lighting individuals I felt Andrew completed the season superbly, especially getting us across the line when the pressure was on and had he played the full season then I’m sure he would have been considered for higher honours. In the coming season it is an opportunity for the younger players to step up and dominate in the way the senior players did. There were cameos from the two Bens, Kieran and Chris, which in the coming season need to be converted into winning performances, rather than relying on a small group of senior players.

I also wish to congratulate Craig Ross for his sterling efforts throughout the season having taken over from Chad, his steady penetrative bowling and at times hid bold and effective hitting. As well to have Sunnie Chan, Craig Ross, Amandeep Singh and Chris Small playing in the Canterbury colours reflects well on the club.

Finally, as a club we need to follow up the performance of last season with the same dedication and efforts that gave us success, and approach the coming season with the same energy and professionalism. To do well for one season is commendable, but to do it consistently is the ultimate test. My thanks to the committee for their support, in particular Ivan, Michael and David without whom our performances would have been incomplete.

Mike Shrimpton Coach Senior Men’s One Day Competition

The senior men’s one-day cricket competition proved to be one of the most successful seasons in quite some time for Sydenham. A major factor in the team’s success was the continuous efforts of Mike Shrimpton and how he coached and guided the team throughout the season.

The one-day season got off to a poor start when we were completely out-played by Lancaster Park Woolston. This loss proved a real eye-opener which resulted in us defeating St Albans by 6 in the next game. The stand-out performance came from Sunnie Chan, taking 6 for 18 off 10 overs.

The next game against Canterbury Country was a tight encounter in which we managed to win with 6 balls to spare. All the bowlers chipped in and the run chase proved exciting with Sean Heather making a valuable 73 , and Craig Ross hitting 56 off 35 balls.

The following game against Riccarton was one I believe that everyone involved will remember for the rest of their cricketing careers. We managed to hold Riccarton to 181 in their 50 overs. The run chase was shaky throughout until Ben Larter was introduced to the crease. Ben hit 16 off 5 balls including 2 towering sixes to win the match.

The following match was rained off against Burnside. Next we suffered a narrow loss against East Shirley. The following match against Marist was a one-sided affair in our favour. A superb spell of 4 for 29 from Chris Small and a gritty 89 from Ben Rapson closed the deal.

Then it was semi-final time, facing East Shirley. Our senior players knew the importance of this game as it had been a long time since Sydenham defeated Easts. We won the toss and bowled first and managed to keep Easts to 212 on a good batting track. The run chase looked gone at 38 for 4, but then came solid batting from Ben Orton (43), Andrew Fullerton-Smith (49), Craig Ross (41) and an unbeaten 28 from Chris Small. Again another exciting match where only six balls remained.

Next the one-day final, which was held at Elmwood Park against opponents Old Boys Collegians. We won the toss and decided to bowl first on what looked to be the best batting surface seen all year. All the bowlers were accurate with line and length and managed to hold Old Boys Collegians to a very gettable 160. The main destroyers were Craig Ross (3 for 29), Ben Rapson (3 for 11) and Sunnie Chan (2 for 33). Chad Romano, Ben Larter, Chris Small and Sean Heather also provided consistent pressure through the middle of the innings.

The run chase never looked in doubt. All the batsmen put their hand up and ensured that Sydenham was crowned CCA One Day Champions. Ben Rapson batted 46, Kieran Williams 45, and Sean Heather and Ben Orton were both not out 24 and 32 respectively.

It has been 12 years between drinks for the Sydenham Senior Cricket side, so the win was duly celebrated.

Sydenham has struggled to be competitive in the two-day competition for a number of years. The format for the two- day season this year was to change, in that after a complete round, the competition was to split into top 4 and bottom 4. The new format was a great incentive for the team, as we were all keen to make that top bracket.

The first game was against St Albans and was drawn. There were impressive performances, including Sunnie Chan taking 4 for 23 and smashing 64 with the bat to ensure first innings points. We were 2 wickets shy of taking outright points but it was an encouraging start to the two-day season.

The following match against Burnside was a good first innings win for us with Amen Singh the destroyer taking 4 for 9 off 10.2 overs. The bulk of the runs came from Ben Orton and Kieran Williams who both passed 50. Once again we managed to get first innings points but were 2 wickets short of claiming outright points.

The following game against Old Boys was one to remember for all the wrong reasons. We won the toss and put Old Boys in to bat and quickly found ourselves batting, with Craig Ross, Amandeep Singh and Sunnie Chan all claiming 3 wickets a piece. Chasing 127 for first innings points we found ourselves 222 for 5 at close of play. This included 50s to Andrew Fullerton-Smith and Ben Rapson, and 45 off 28 balls from Nigel Collins.

Being in a strong position we looked forward to the following Saturday. There was heavy rain on Friday and any reasonable person would have put the covers on, but this was not the case and therefore no play was able. This was one of the most disappointing events I had seen in senior cricket.

The following two-day match was against East Shirley. East won the toss and chose to bat which seemed to be a good decision as they racked up 269 runs in the first innings. The wickets were from Ben Rapson 3 for 70 and Craig Ross 4 for 28. This set up a good run chase in which we had to bat out of our skins to collect first innings points. Thanks to Sean Heather our English pro who hit 118 off 167 balls and Craig Ross who hit 62 off 95 balls, the target of 270 was achieved. The game ended in a draw but the first innings points we collected were very valuable.

The next match against Lancaster Park helped us move up the points ladder. A win by an innings and 2 runs. It was a complete team performance in which every member contributed to the victory. Ben Larter grabbed 4 for 28 and Chris Small hit 54.

The following match against Marist moved the team further up the ladder. We managed to get outright points. Individual performances that helped turn this game in our favour include Ben Larter’s 4 for 10 and Chad Romano’s 5 for 24.

Our next match with Riccarton ended up being a fight for first innings. We dismissed Riccarton for 187 in a performance that included an impressive 5 for 77 from Chad Romano. We ended 324 for 8 declared. The bulk of the runs came from Chad Romano (60 not out) and Sean Heather (83). The game ended in a draw.

In the following match against St Albans we were defeated by 3 wickets which gave St Albans outright points from a match we never really got into.

With only two matches remaining in the two-day competition it was important to secure another win to give ourselves an outright chance of winning the competition.

East Shirley was going to make it tough to collect points late in the season. We restricted Easts to 118 in the first innings. This was thanks to spin kings Ben Rapson and Chad Romano, who took 9 of the 10 wickets between them. The run chase wasn’t successful— we fell 10 runs short. Then East set us a target of 195 off 30 overs which was going to be a tough ask. We were bowled out for 171 off 28 overs. We gave it everything we had in an effort to secure a chance of winning the competition.

The last two-day match of the season was with Riccarton. Again, it was a match we never really got into and our demise seemed inevitable. We were beaten by 108 runs.

However, we had a successful season, finishing 4th in the two-day competition, and we weren’t far away from challenging the competition winner, Riccarton.

Overall Summary

The season was one of the most successful for quite some time, as we won the one-day competition for the first time in 12 years, and finished 4th in the two-day competition. The team was rewarded with three players playing for Canterbury throughout the season: Sunnie Chan, Chris Small and Amandeep Singh.

A number of younger players joined the club and hopefully they will make a major contribution next season.

Mike Shrimpton was also rewarded for his coaching efforts by being awarded the medal for services to cricket – fine recognition. Those of you who know or have been coached by Mike will appreciate that this was long overdue.

I look forward to seeing you all next season.

2ND GRADE TEAM REPORT

Well another year gone and another year of using a lot of players!!! Sometimes it can get rather frustrating not knowing who will turn up on Saturdays, let alone the dreadful Sunday games. But hey we got threw the season ok. One good thing came from using a lot of players was finding some good up and coming young talent like Sam Baker, Hayden West, Nick Franzman.

As a team, I thought we preformed pretty well. Making the 1day semi was a good achievement, and at times, in the 2day competition we were looking pretty good, just not being able to finish of was a concern.

With the bat, you can’t look pass Benny Williams. Outstanding is a pretty good word for him with 12 innings raking up 834 runs. I could only imaging how many he would have got if he had played a full season. Others to look good at the crease were Justin Prime and Dan Thomson.

With the ball, not really to many big stand outs but some good consistent bowling performances were showed by Tim Bloomfield, Sunjay Ganda, Nick Tuelon, Sam Baker and Adam Chivers.

I'd like to say thanks to all the guys that helped out that little bit extra during the season to make things easier for the team – cheers.

So now we all look forward to another season. With the new talent arriving at the end of the season and the senior boys performing so well, I’ ll expect some great results next season.

SUBURBAN 3B GRADE “GOATS” TEAM REPORT

The season began back in early October on a cool, cloudy day at Merivale Papanui’s home ground of Tulett Park. Signs were not positive when the Goats, fresh off an intensive pre-season build-up, were inserted on a green (typical poor Tulett standard) and despite being urged by the captain to bat out the overs were dismissed for a paltry 66. A remarkable bowling performance spearheaded by Phil’s 2-2 off six overs and aided by Richie’s 3-6 at the death saw the Goats emerge victorious by 11 runs. Next up was a renewal, after a season’s absence, of the rivalry matches with the Caledonian Pirates. With a third of the team missing in action at the commencement of the game, notably Shane who was getting married the next day, the Goats were always going to struggle especially when certain bowlers claim that they are now top order batsman and deserve a chance to bat high in the order – congratulations Phil, that second ball duck really impressed us all. A woeful batting display saw the Goats rolled for 61 – not a great first salvo across the bow of the Pirates, who were admirably led by their captain who grabbed 7-18. Unfortunately history didn’t repeat itself and the Goats were unable to defend the meagre total – first blood to the Pirates and the Goats had to go back to the MCC coaching manual to learn how to bat. Thankfully it was Hornby up next, just the team to play ourselves back into form, although the batsman would have to wait to redeem themselves as the Goats inserted Hornby. At 20 for 6, it seemed that we wouldn’t get the batting practice we desperately needed, so we threw Richie and Bede the ball and asked them to feed some runs – they duly obliged, Richie ending up going for 32 off 3 overs, Bede was more successful with 4-41 off 8. A lower order revival dominated by the ninth wicket stand of 88 saw Hornby rally to 151. The Goats trudged off angry that they had conceded so many runs and were now facing a far sterner challenge than was to be expected. Fear not, said our stand in openers, Simon and Heath as the proceeded to decimate and dispatch the Hornby attack to all corners of the ground bringing up 50 in the 6th over and calming the nerves of some teammates on the sideline. The departure of Heath brought the captain to the crease and together with Simon they built a match winning stand. At drinks, the score was 108 for 1, victory seemed assured and Simon was closing in on a well-deserved 50. However he decided to throw his wicket away when on 46 but Jon continued to bat sensibly and brought up his 50 before allowing another stand- in Rob Kelly to hit the winning runs for a comfortable victory. The first month of the season came to end against the other Caledonian side, the Wicket-Heads. After a poor start yet again, Richie and Heath set about re-establishing the innings and leading the Goats to a defendable score – Heath, in particular, batted very well for his 56. With a late flourish from the tail, the Goats managed 162 for 7 off their 40 overs. Another display of tight, controlled bowling by firstly Stacey and Phil and well backed up by Lionel and Jason proved too much for the Wicket Heads to handle as they were all out for 101. The 61 run victory left the Goats sitting pretty at 3-1, good enough for second at that stage.

The scene was therefore set for the top of the table clash with Halswell. The relief on the faces of the Goats was evident when we realised that Mr Harvey was not going to be playing and as such the batsman were not concerned about batting first on the Halswell Quarry, aptly named to a huge crater hole at one end of the wicket. After the early dismissal of Rob Graves, a frequently recurring event during the season, Richie and Ollie steadily accumulated the runs with both going on to score half-centuries – this was Ollie’s first fifty for the team and was greeted with rapturous applause by his colleagues. The end of the innings saw another first for the Goats as Lionel was given out for obstructing the field while trying to complete a single. Lionel took his anger out on the helpless Halswell batsman as he set about mercilessly exploiting the hole. Able support was again provided by the rest of the bowlers ensuring that this top of the table clash was decisively won by the Goats by 93 runs sending out a warning to the other teams that the Goats were aiming for back to back titles. It was back to the home ground of Spreydon Domain for the start of the second round of the competition. Once again, it was a poor batting display by the Goats who limped through to 103 all out. Arguably the most entertaining part of the batting effort, and that term is used loosely, was the argument between the tail as to who should bat where next week under the new fancy Gray system. A strong bowling performance was needed and Stacey and Phil stepped up to the mark once again proving very difficult to get away under any circumstances. Lionel chimed in with 3 for 11 and with Jono Campbell, in a rare appearance, picking up a couple of cheap wickets as well, the Goats prevailed in another tight affair against Merivale-Papanui who must be thoroughly sick of losing these types of games against us. The War to Settle the Score against the Pirates was the next game but unfortunately Mother Nature intervened and the game was abandoned leaving the hatred and antipathy to continue to fester and gnaw at each team. Hornby, like lambs to the slaughter, duly turned up for the next game only to be greeted by a rock hard, Waltham Park pitch (a rare sight indeed) and a Goats team high on confidence. That confidence was completely justified as Richie, after running out Rob Graves, who failed to adhere to the old adage, that you never ever let Richie do the calling, proceeded to scratch his way to fifty before opening up and bringing up the first century of the season for the Goats. He was ably supported by Jon who scored 44, and three delightful cameos at the end of the innings, Lionel with 33, and then Stacey and Jason who engaged in a can-you-top-this contest for the last two overs of the innings – Jason emerged victorious with 15 off 4 compared to Stacey’s more sedate 15 off 7. The end result was a total of 268 for 7 off the allotted 40 overs. Hornby were demoralised as they started their innings and things got worse quickly as Lionel and Phil easily knocked the top off the order, each grabbing 3 wickets with Lionel having the impressive figures of 3-2 off 4 overs. The rest of the bowlers chipped in and Hornby were dismissed for 122 – another straightforward win for the table-topping Goats.

December began with a rain-enhanced green top at St Albans Park against the Wicket- Heads. With the toss safely won, the Goats inserted the opposition and Stacey continued to perform at high level taking 4-7 off his eight overs ripping the heart out of the Wicket- Heads like the Thuggee leader Mola Ram in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Bede took 3 wickets as well ensuring that the Wicket-Heads only made 81. That was never going to be enough for the gallivanting Goats who led by batsman extraordinaire Richie, scoring yet another 50, galloped to victory with 9 wickets to spare. The following match against Halswell was rained out meaning the Goats went into the third round of the competition riding a six game win streak and not having tasted defeat for the previous two months. The weather only slightly improved the next week, with a depressing grey sky heralding the Goats return to Tulett Park for another contest with Merivale Papanui. Jason had been promoted up the order to open due to a back injury which would prevent him from bowling – he was joined by Rob who proceeded to give his best Geoffrey Boycott impression, seeing off the new ball with aplomb but forgetting about the second part of a batsman’s job which is to score runs, ending up with a miserable 7 off 45. Richie, batting at 5, again proved to be best batsman of the day, and looked odds on to score his 4th consecutive fifty, but after getting under the skin of the bowlers once too often and being on the end of a shoulder charge, he was dismissed for 44. Rob, desperate to make up for his batting debacle added to his ineptitude by signalling a waist high no-ball despite the fact that the ball had bounced halfway down the wicket. To make matters worse for poor Rob, he decided to give Stacey out run out even though the bowler had dropped the ball and broken the stumps with his hands (luckily the opposition realised the mistake and allowed Stacey to continue his innings for a few more balls). The Goats managed to stagger their way to 152 thanks to a little wagging of the tail, although if they had learnt how to call and run between the wickets a few more runs could have been forthcoming. The opening bowlers, Stacey and Phil, kept the Merivale-Papanui batters under control and were ably supported by Lionel and Jono. Wickets fell at a steady rate and pressure was being created as the run rate required began to creep up - this resulted in a suicidal run out for Richie. At drinks, the Goats felt that the game was under control and with the dismissal of the Merivale Papanui captain shortly after the resumption of play, victory was within reach. Please now turn to page 1 of how to blow a very winnable game (a Goats speciality in previous years). Aided by some very average bowling especially by Bede, who also dropped a caught and bowled attempt -failing to uphold the adage that catches win matches, some luck with a number of balls being chipped just over or around fieldsman and some very good batting - a couple of great straight drives especially, two brothers managed to steer Merivale Papanui to a comfortable victory with 2.5 overs to spare. The acidic flavour of defeat had finally reared its bitter head but the Goats trudged off the field knowing that they still held the lead heading into the long awaited second showdown with the Pirates. The fickle weather refused to budge and the game was yet again abandoned but this was not a terrible outcome as it ensured that the Goats would lead the competition heading into the Christmas break.

The Christmas Break was finished and it had been almost a month since the Goats had played their last game, when they ventured to Denton Oval to once again play Hornby. With Lionel captaining the team in Jon’s absence there was only ever going to be one decision once the toss was won and that was to bowl first on the wet, green pitch. Hornby were dogged in defence, refusing to roll over for the Goats as they had done in previous seasons, however, you still need to score runs and that was Hornby’s undoing. With half of the overs gone they were 33 for 1, a solid foundation, but with a very youthful line-up, one that could easily crumble under pressure. That pressure was applied by Jason who ended up with a very impressive 5-24 – the first Michelle Pfeiffer of the season for the team. With the captain leading the way, with 2-4 off 6.3 overs and the others following his example, Hornby were eventually dismissed for a paltry 82, although not with some hilarity courtesy of Mr Vincent who attempted to run in and take a simple catch, realised he didn’t have any traction and ended up only clutching at air before having the ignominy of landing on the ball on the ground, injuring his rib (and his pride) and watching it squirt out to Richie who proceeded to complete an easy run out – the Marx Brothers would have been proud of a routine like that. The laughing quickly ceased as the Goats, no doubt thinking that the run chase would be a cakewalk, lived up to their name and promptly collapsed to be 32 for 5. Ollie, thankfully had been placed down the order and in conjunction with Lionel set about re-establishing the path to victory. It was slow progress at first but with plenty of overs to bat and only the tail remaining this circumspect approach was the correct move. Gradually the two of them began to get on top of the Hornby attack and with help from poor catching behind the wicket, successfully guided the Goats to another victory. It had been a wake-up call for the Goats that they would not forget in a hurry. The next game against the Wicket- Heads was rained out so it was Halswell that were the recipients of the Goats’ anger at their previous performance and boy were we really pissed off. It started well for Halswell, winning the toss and electing to bat on a good-looking pitch (minus the Halswell Quarry). That would turn out to be the highlight of their day however as Stacey was his solid, reliable self, tying down the Halswell opening pair whereas Phil produced a lot of swing but struggled just a bit with his line even conceding over a sixth of the Halswell's total in one over. The opening stand was broken by a good catch by Paul even if Rob did his best to put him off. With Phil out of the attack, Lionel, who hooked himself up to the rejuvenation machine this year, produced another vintage spell of swing bowling that brought back memories of the Indian great Arel Mahdafarker, with cut, verve and movement that ripped the heart out of the overwhelmed middle order. He did however take some tap in his final overs with his figures blowing out from 2-2 off four to 3-6 off eight giving him a two week line of 14.3-8-10-5. Jason bowled tidily in tandem with Lionel and also provided a great , let me completely screw up running out ‘Mr Cricket’ in the last CB Series, impression. Richie produced a great throw from the mid/long off region - a direct hit that was incorrectly given not out - this did not prove costly though as two balls later Jon combined with Bede to finally effect a run out. Phil re-energised himself and came back to finish off the tail with Bede providing steady support from the other end. The end result - Halswell demolished for 52 and collectively wearing the What the F*** just happened face. Jon and Richie set about chasing the small total - a boundary by Jon off the first over was quickly followed by a simple chance being gleefully accepted at gully after Jon had misread the pace of the bowler and finished his shot before the ball arrived. Paul came, played a wonderful ramp shot (his first good shot for about 2 months)and departed just as quickly - not the start that had been envisaged, 2 for 10, and a chance to live up to our name. Richie however steadied the ship peppering the square leg boundary with pulls and hooks. He did miss out on his target of a very literal “cow corner” though much to his disappointment. His innings was curtailed on 27 when he was adjudged LBW by Phil. Shane and Rob, both struggling for runs had a chance to close out the game but Rob lived up to his nickname and was run out with a direct hit - strangely no anger this time compared with when he was run out by Richie. Ollie came in and hit a wonderful walking charge cover drive for four and completed the mauling. The Goats were flying high and it seemed it would be merely be a procession to the title.

The change in month brought a change in fortune for the Goats as an ill wind swooped in and threatened to wreck the season as the team crashed to two consecutive losses. The first was against a team fast becoming a nemesis – Merivale Papanui. The rain on the night before the game had freshened the pitch up and Merivale Papanui won the toss and sent the Goats into bat. Jason was promoted to specialist guest opener and started the match off with a bang hitting the first ball to the boundary for 4, Richie on the other hand was given first use of Stacey’s new bat but only succeeded in hitting the third ball he faced straight to cover and was on his way for a duck. This prompted Richie to complain that the afternoon was ruined for him and he refused to take his pads off even when summoned to umpire. Despite this incident, Jason and Jon had set about setting a platform on which the team could build on getting through to 30 in the 5th over before Jason threw his wicket away with a rash shot. Rob came and went pretty smartly, given out LBW by Stacey who was deemed by Rob to have ‘arms like a springboard’. This brought Paul to the crease and understandably hopes were not high that the partnership would last long, considering that in his previous 7 innings, Paul had scored a grand total of 28 – not exactly the second coming of Bradman, and this fear was worsened when he edgily cut the first ball off middle stump. But after that inauspicious start, it was a totally different man that appeared – he actually looked like a batsman for the first time this season – his piece de resistance was a glorious cover drive that any player would have been proud to call their own. Whilst Paul was batting well, the other end was in crisis mode as Jon missed a straight one – a very rare sight, and then Shane chopped one back onto his stumps continuing his awful form. At 58-5, the Goats were trouble, but the man for this situation, Lionel or Harry as Richie prefers to call him was strolling to the crease easing some of the nerves on the sideline. Rather than help the situation, he in fact hindered it, as he was woefully out of touch and to be honest he couldn’t have hit a cow’s backside with a banjo if he had tried. This frustrated and agitated Richie even more but Paul continued to tick the scoreboard over. He was eventually dismissed for 38 and the rot set in, Phil was out for 3, Lionel followed shortly after for a painful 13, Stacey smacked a four with his new bat before getting clean bowled and Shaun dragged a ball back onto his stumps off his foot. Bede was the not out batsman, but with a pathetic 0* off 12 balls, proved that Glenn McGrath was his batting inspiration, leading to an argument with Phil about whether a not out beat an out batsman under the Gray system but more importantly, the self appointment of Bede as Tail Captain, a role he had just displayed apt skill in. A disappointing 112 was the end result but knowing that we had defended 66 against this team, the Goats felt that victory was possible. Stacey struck first ball removing the man known as either Fidget or Obelix. Sadly this was the high point for Stacey as his third over was a real pupu platter that was smashed to all parts of Spreydon Domain to the tune of 20 runs. Still with Phil bowling tightly although not looking very threatening and Shaun running in with purpose from the other end, it was still anybody’s game. Lionel replaced Phil and Jason replaced Shaun and the double change provided immediate dividends for the Goats with both picking up wickets to leave Merivale at 39-3. Luckily for Merivale, their two best batsmen were at the crease and try as they might, Jason, Lionel and Bede just couldn’t find the ball to dismiss them. Drinks arrived with Merivale sitting comfortably at 74-3; it would take a patented Merivale Calypso Collapso for the Goats to pull this one out of the fire. Jason struck twice straight after drinks to rock Merivale and when Bede lured the one man who leading Merivale to glory to hit a ball straight down Paul’s throat at Deep Backward Square Leg, it seemed the Goats were on top. There was one tiny little problem, however, as Paul, seemingly summoned the spirits of all those who have choked, when asked to deliver such as Carlos Spencer, Andrew Mehrtens, Donna Loffhagen, Bill Buckner, Scott Norwood, (I can still continue if you want...), and inexplicably dropped the catch. As if to rub salt into the gaping Goat wounds, the batsman then proceeded to hit the next two balls to the boundary sucking the life out of the team. Jason was also dispatched to the boundary a couple of times but managed to delay the inevitable for a little longer by picking up his third wicket of the game. Shaun was brought back as a last gasp measure but flame of victory had withered and died by that stage and it was left to the receiver of Paul’s gift to emphatically end the game with a towering six off Jason. The Goats knew they had been poor and were anxious to show their true colours in the big showdown with the Caledonian Pirates who were only a game behind. Like a typical summer's afternoon this year, it was overcast and chilly meaning that the toss was again going to be of vital importance. As has been commonplace recently Jon lost the toss and we were inserted. Phil had been designated as specialist guest opener but lost his place when he didn't arrive until 12:56. Stacey grabbed his opportunity and alongside Rob strode out to the crease to face the Pirates' broadside. Stacey with his trademark step away to leg and try and smash it through the offside unleashed a volley of boundaries whereas Rob had the effectiveness of a pop gun that fires a Bang flag upon discharge as his slump continued with another painful innings - 0 off 15 this time. Heath who been summoned off the bench to replace Richie got a ripper of a ball first up - outswinging yorker that cannoned into the base of off stump. This brought Cap'n Jon to the crease to steady the listing SS Goats. He and Stacey briefly righted the ship before Stacey was clean bowled. Ollie, refreshed after a week away, was in next but before he and Jon could really establish any sort of partnership, Jon lobbed a ball to cover where it was gingerly accepted. At 4-33, it seemed that Goats would be walking the plank in regular succession and relative ease, but with last week's batting star, Paul, striding to the crease, perhaps the haemorrhaging could be stopped. For a while, this instead was the case as Ollie and Paul batted sensibly and continued to tick the scoreboard over at a steady rate. The introduction of the man who took 7-18 against us back in October proved crucial as he removed Paul in the over before drinks and following the refreshments continued his havoc-wreaking antics picking up Ollie and Lionel in successive overs. At 75-7, with an out-of form Shane and Jason at the crease, the situation looked bleak but with Shane occupying one end and Jason determined to prove to himself and the team that he could make use of his batting talent and construct an innings rather than succumb to another Jasonism, a mini-recovery was achieved. The departure of Shane brought Phil to the crease and with Jason batting with a new found maturity - must be due him now officially being a man having celebrated his 21st birthday earlier that week- the two of them got the score up to 110 before Phil was dismissed caught at point, although he claimed that it was a bump ball, leading to him then being run out. After a brief consultation Rob and Heath decided that in fact he had been caught and Phil trudged off the field. The woefully out of form tail captain was next and proceeded to continue to suck extending his streak to 17 consecutive dot balls before toe ending a ball to cover. 111 was a total that made the Goats want to call for emergency assistance but the strength of the team this year had been the bowling so there was still a sense of belief that the victory flag would be fluttering in the breeze. A very late change of plans saw Stacey open the bowling instead of Jason, meaning that Stacey had achieved Richie's dream of opening both the batting and the bowling. A wicket in his first over once he found his line and length boosted the confidence and with Phil following up with a maiden things were looking promising. Two fours off Stacey's next over saw him replaced by Jason and Phil bowled another maiden. Jason, who on this pitch was going to be one of the heavy strike force, broke down after one ball but managed to finish the over before ensconcing himself at slip for the rest of the game. The loss of Jason was a big blow and forced a rethink in the battle plan with Heath replacing him. Phil down the other end continued his tight control and great command finishing his first spell of five overs with 1 for 1. Lionel continued the wizardry from Phil's end but unfortunately runs were still flowing freely from the opposite. Heath was replaced after 3 overs by a returning Stacey but this did not stem the trickle of runs as the Pirates edged closer to victory. With both Lionel and Stacey picking up wickets just before the drinks break and Bede bowling a nice tight over to start his spell, the Goats entered the intermission with a feeling that if they could break up the partnership, it could be them celebrating a 10 point lead. With Bede, in an event so improbable that many people had to actually rub their eyes numerous times to believe it was true, actually spinning the ball and posing problems for the left hander, there was still hope if Stacey and Heath could chip in with a couple of wickets from the far end. Stacey almost provided the fillip desperately required but both times chances were spilled. Eventually, Bede switched ends and after 26 consecutive balls to the leftie, finally got to face the right-hander and trapped him LBW - could a miracle occur and the Goats wriggle out of another low scoring game? Those faint hopes were quickly demolished with a four and a six off Phil shattering his remarkable figures up to that point. With their captain growing in confidence all the time, all that was left was for Bede to pad his statistics by picking up another wicket, meaning that all 5 frontline bowlers had now taken at least 15 wickets this season, with a perfect off break that bamboozled the batsman. The end was nigh however and the straggly Goats were put out of their misery with a drive through the covers for 4. The Goats realised that the batting had again failed to produce a defendable total and that until this was rectified, victories would be hard to come by. It was all tied at the top and the final month and a half would determine who would be the champions for the 06/07 season. Thankfully, it was time for another match against Hornby – the perfect team to face if you needed a confidence booster. The Goats yet again lost the toss but seeing as it was a beautifully sunny day, we were invited to bowl first for a change, which suited the team just fine as our batting had been awful for the last few weeks. The opening bowlers, Stacey and Lionel – Phil yet again found another way to be late - bowled tidily, if a little light on the wicket taking front. Phil on his arrival soon sorted that problem out and it seemed that Hornby would once again struggle to post a meaningful target but with Jason and Jono both unavailable, the bowling depth was going to be tested, and like in the first encounter against Hornby, the part-timers of Richie, Simon and Bede decided they would rather feed Hornby runs than concentrate on taking wickets, collectively going for 127 runs off their 16 overs. Led by an Irish import who could hit the cover off the ball Hornby smashed their way through to a very respectable total of 191, leaving the Goats to ponder how things could have gone so horribly wrong since the demolition of Halswell a few weeks back. Tail Captain Bede strode out to the wicket with Richie with a 17-ball scoreless streak on his mind but that was quickly put to rest as he and Richie played sensibly and stylishly, dispatching the ordinary (if Bede can score runs against them, they must be ordinary) bowling attack of Hornby. Bede, in fact was scoring at a rate quicker than Richie at one point prompting Richie to come down and pull rank saying he was the senior partner and Bede should slow down the rate as it was making him look bad – both needed to atone for their useless bowling displays and did so in style bringing up a 100 run opening partnership – the first of the season. Richie was out shortly before drinks for 54, and Bede, by this stage blowing hard like Ultimate Warrior after he ran to the ring in Wrestlemania VI, followed shortly after the drinks break for a well compiled 42, mimicking Simon in throwing away a fifty against Hornby. Despite the losses of the openers in a short period of time the game was never in doubt with Ollie and then Jon and Paul leading the Goats to a long-overdue and comfortable 7 wicket victory. Paul must have had some place to go in a hurry, as he ended the innings with 5 fours in the final over continuing his good form. Were the Goats back in business or was this a one-off revival of their fortunes– the next couple of games would hopefully provide the answer.

The next game against the Wicket-heads was rained out so that solved nothing so it was into the final month of the season with the first game against Halswell. As what seemed the permanent case after Christmas, the Goats lost the toss, and were inserted on a green wicket. Phil was this week’s special guest opener – he finally made it to a game on time – and together with Richie they managed to set a good foundation with an opening stand in excess of 50, although Stacey must have been getting nervous as Phil edged towards 20, and the winning of a bet which had seen Stacey agree to kiss Phil’s bare buttocks if he had scored 20. Thankfully Stacey was spared as Phil was dismissed for 18 but Richie and Jon carried on before Richie was out for 40. At drinks it was 76 for 2 – a good platform to launch from – fate had other ideas as controversy reared its ugly head when Bede dubiously gave Jon out LBW – in perhaps a case of revenge for placing him down at 9 this week. Worse was still to come later as he gave Lionel out LBW as well – with his impending trip to the US coming up, he seemed like he really wanted to go out with a bang. The middle order collapsed leaving the ring-ins, Simon and AC, to conduct a rescue and salvage operation. These two old heads proved to the younger members how to go about revitalising an innings but it appeared that nobody really paid any attention as with the exception of Stacey’s 18 not out, the tail crumbled once again leaving the Goats with a barely adequate 148 to defend. The strength of the Goats this season has been the bowlers and once again they came to the partly with the ageless wonder Lionel opening up and demoralising the Halswell top order taking 4-24 off his eight overs. With Phil, Stacey and Jason providing good support to Lionel, but unfortunately not taking any wickets, the ball was tossed to Bede who was determined to end his season on a high. His bowling form had not been sharp this year and it was a risky gamble for Jon to take knowing that if it didn’t come off he would be forced to rely on part-timers Richie and Simon who had failed badly against Halswell. This time Bede delivered a wonderful spell, finding a good length early and causing the batsman trouble. He should have had his first wicket when one of the batsman skied a ball down to Lionel at long-on, normally Lionel has hands as safe as houses, indeed even Richie, a noted non-monetary gambler explained that he had money on Lionel, but sure enough the ball cannoned straight through Lionel’s hands and pounded into his chest with a sickening thud before dropping to the ground. Bede brushed this aside, showing new maturity since been named tail captain, and continued on his merry way aided by a sharp reflex catch by Lionel atoning for his sins of earlier on and a remarkable one hander by AC. He finished off the game with a wicket with his last ball, bagging the figures of 3-21 off eight and giving the Goats a comfortable 50 run win ensuring that as he departed they were still top of the table. Next up for the Goats was a crunch match against Merivale Papanui, and the Goats were eager to avenge the losses in the previous two matches. Another awful Tulett Park pitch awaited the team but in a miracle to end all miracles, Jon finally won a toss and sent the opposition in to bat. This decision immediately had the Goats in a buoyant mood and the sledging between teammates was all on again with the best line coming from Rob who replied to Lionel’s question about whether he was aroused by a 747 flying overhead by saying that in fact it was thinking about Lionel’s daughter that had raised the flagpole. More frivolity was still to come as AC forgot the age old rule of never try and put your trousers on whilst wearing cricket boots unless you want to look like an idiot. This comedy seemed to settle the Goats nerves as the proceeded to produce an immaculate display of bowling from the usual suspects – Phil, Stacey and Lionel – leaving Merivale Papanui struggling at 36 for 5 at drinks. Cometh the hour, cometh the man as they say – today it was Jason’s turn to be The Man as he shredded the remaining defences of the Merivale Papanui side with a brilliant spell of bowling that yielded 4-14 that ended any hopes that Merivale had of winning the game. Jon also got in on the act, rolling his arm over for the first time this season and unleashing the mystery ball – the half-tracker that is so slow the batsman believes he can play 4 different shots before it gets to him and then turns around and finds that he has been bowled much to the amusement of all – but wait that’s not all, it also comes with a full apology in flight path as an extra bonus. An LBW next ball saw the massacre end with only a paltry 63 on the board. Surely not even the Goats could blow this gilt-edged opportunity and thankfully that is the case as Richie and Ollie guide the team to a comfortable 8 wicket win – it does indeed seem that revenge is a dish best served cold. The match of the season, the potential decider between the Goats and the Pirates was up next and as it was St Patrick’s Day, the team hoped the luck of the Irish would be smiling down on them and would enable them to basically wrap up the competition by virtue of having a 10 point lead with 2 rounds to go. The toss was won once again and the Pirates were sent in to bat, a curious decision when the likes of Phil were missing and Jono unable to bowl, leading to the likes of Shane, Jon and Darren being called upon to roll the arm over. None of the Pirates however really got away from the Goats, the top score being 36, and with Lionel once again picking up another brace of wickets – 3 this time, the Goats were confident they could overhaul the 160 scored by the Pirates, although they could have really helped themselves with more application in the field with at least 5 chances going down. That needed to be put to the side and focus on the task at hand was required. The run chase began inauspiciously as Jono, guest opening, fell for a duck – the first failure this season for the G.O. This brought to the crease, the 3rd Grade Predators captain, Darren Hickson, to the crease. Darren is an accomplished batsman, but not in this game as he departed for a measly 5. Stunningly it was Rob who provided the backbone to the innings easily making his highest score for the year to this point – together with Richie it appeared that the innings may have been back on course and the Goats headed for a win. This dream was swallowed up by a black cloud in the form of the drinks break as the Goats collapsed to be 80 for 6 a couple of overs after play resumed. Richie and Paul represented the winning or losing of the game for the Goats and together they set about guiding the team to victory. They easily reached the hundred mark with no further loss and it seemed the Goats could be back in the match but just like that disaster struck as Paul chased a wide one and was caught behind. Richie realised that he was the only hope for victory and went for one pull shot too many and was caught extinguishing the hopes of the Goats in this game and their one game lead in the competition. Lionel was the last man out as the Goats were dismissed for 127. The Pirates swept the season series with the Goats 3-0 and certainly enjoyed rubbing the Goats noses in that fact but by virtue of poor performances against lower ranked opponents were only tied going into the final two weeks of the season with both sides realistically needing to win both games if they were a chance to grab at least a share of the spoils. As fate would have it, the luck of the Irish came a week late as the Goats were due to meet Hornby in the penultimate match of the season. This match proved to be the one-sided contest that it was envisaged. The Goats were eager to take their frustrations with their inability to beat the Pirates out on the hapless Hornby side and once Simon was out of the way early, Richie and Paul combined to put on a batting master class, although Richie maybe shouldn’t offer psychological advice as he advised Paul to slow down as he was approaching his first fifty for the team and then the inevitable happened and Paul was out for a scintillating 49. That small bump in the road didn’t deter Richie as he marched his way through the seventies and eighties and nineties finding another willing partner in Jon who struck 30 before being dismissed. Ollie was next in, but Richie, now having passed 100 decided that he just wasn’t scoring freely enough and ran him out (although to be fair, it was direct hit from the boundary). This brought Rob to the crease, Rob had been the subject of some harsh criticism for his lack of production this season but to his credit he sucked it all up and decided to unleash his anger and punishment on the Hornby attack smashing two huge sixes and a few fours on his merry way to an unbeaten 36. While Rob was blazing from one end, Richie was doing exactly the same from the other bringing up his highest ever score and surpassing the magical 150 mark. It was truly a wonderful and brilliant innings that he will be telling us about for many years to come. With a boundary from Rob off the last ball, the Goats soared past the 300 mark for the first time this season ending with a formidable 303 for 6 off 40 overs. This score was always going to be out of Hornby’s range and they must have hoped to get a score that was somewhat respectable. The Goat bowlers took their cue from the batsman and ensured that it would be a completely deflating day for Hornby as Lionel decimated the youthful line-up grabbing another 5 wickets. Paul capped off a fine all round day by displaying some previously unknown bowling ability chiming in with 2-3 of 1.2 overs. The end result was a mammoth 238 run win for the Goats and the chance to ensure they at least shared the trophy with a win in the final game against the Wicket Heads.

So this is what it come down to – the final match, win and we are back to back champions of the grade, lose and we are chokers who will be mercilessly reminded about it by the Pirates – the stakes couldn’t be higher. The game started well as we win the toss and sent the Wicket Heads into bat on a green pitch. The pitch however seemed to be a red herring as Stacey and Lionel were unable to make any headway and the pitch offering less help than anticipated. At drinks, they were 57 for 1 – a strong base for a score in excess of 150 which may prove difficult to chase down especially with the pressure of winning a competition to think about. Jono picked up a couple of quick wickets but at 100 odd for 3, a good score was still on the cards. Enter Jason who really came to the fore and stood up to be counted. He produced a career best spell of bowling, moving the ball around and generally wreaking havoc with the Wicket Heads batsmen and he thoroughly deserved his excellent figures of 6-25 (best for the team this season). The Wicket Heads were dismissed for 151 thanks to Jason’s spell leaving the Goats 152 to win the grade for the second straight year. Richie as the leading run scorer opened the batting once again and was joined by Darren, who proceeds to take 22 balls to get off the mark equalling the record set last season by Rob, before being bowled by a slow full toss. Phil is unbelievably the next batsman in, on account that he has to catch a bus, but in a game where people needed to stand up, Phil does his job to the best of his ability and shows that yes he actually can bat sensibly when required. The loss of Richie potentially could have been catastrophic for the Goats and this scenario was magnified when Phil ran out another man in great form, Paul. Phil was the next man out for a well-compiled 32. Jon needed a stable batting partner to stick with him and guide the team to championship glory – Simon had filled this role in previous game but stupidly ran himself out. This error was compounded by Shane doing the identical thing and running himself out. A lesser team may have just given up and capitulated at this point but Jon rallied the team around him and continued to push towards championship immortality. With 10 overs to go, 40 runs were required with four wickets in hand and the two most experienced members of the team at the crease – Jon and Lionel. Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory was staring the Goats straight in the eyes saying if you want some, come get some, but we are known as the Goats for a reason. With the beers on ice ready to be cracked open and a mere 6 runs required off two overs, was there one final twist in this great season? Amazingly the answer would be yes, Jon who had lead the team to the precipice of glory, was run out in the penultimate over and Lionel couldn’t get the ball past the encroaching field. 5 runs were needed off the last over. Jason the man of the moment earlier in the day was on strike – could he put himself into the annals of history and lead the team to the promised land. The first ball is a swing and a miss – 5 off 5. Second ball, Jason manages to make contact and a run is scored – 4 off 4 with Lionel now on strike – would he be the hero? The answer would seemingly be no as he swung and missed the third ball of the over, it was now 4 off 3. Fourth ball, Lionel makes get bat on ball and its down to 3 off 2 with all the pressure on Jason. That pressure pushed down on his shoulders even harder after he again swung and missed at the 5th ball of the over – it was now 3 off 1 and the Wicket Heads began to celebrate as it looked as if they had secured the competition for their Caledonian brethren. The fielders were spread far and wide trying to cut off the required boundary as the bowler came charging in to deliver the last ball of the season. Jason picked up his bat saw that the ball was full, just as he liked, swung through the line and made clean contact - the ball speed off his bat in the direction of long on. The sideline waited with anticipation as we knew Jason’s hitting ability. The scene was reminiscent of when Bobby Thomson hit the Shot Heard Around The World to win the 1951 National League Pennant for the New York Giants. The broadcast that day was “There's a long drive, it's gonna be, I believe...THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! Bobby Thomson hits into the lower deck of the left- field stands! The Giants win the pennant and they're going crazy, they're going crazy! Ohhhhh-oh!!!' Our version goes something like this “There's a long drive, it's gonna be, I believe...THE GOATS WIN THE GRADE!! THE GOATS WIN THE GRADE! THE GOATS WIN THE GRADE! THE GOATS WIN THE GRADE! Jason Robinson hits into the long on boundary! The Goats win the grade and they're going crazy, they're going crazy! Ohhhhh- oh!!!' To quote Vin Scully after Kirk Gibson, who could barely walk, hit a walk-off home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series to give the Dodgers the win “In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!” That summed up the Goats’ feelings as they had streamed onto the field wondering how they remarkably managed to win the game and the grade thanks to the youngest member of the team Jason delivering in the clutch.

The incredible victory capped off a wonderful season for the Goats, full of great achievements, arguments, and side splitting sledges that culminated in them being crowned grade champions for the second straight season. The oldest member of the team, Lionel was crowned King Billy Goat (MVP) for the season due to his 39 wickets much to the chagrin of Richie who was equally spectacular with nearly 700 runs and 19 catches and a few wickets (maybe next year, Richie – we are always open to bribes). Next year will hopefully be just as enthralling and enjoyable and will end with the mighty Goats celebrating a momentous three-peat of titles but now it’s time to draw the curtain down on season 06/07 and reminisce about that marvellous catch, and that marvellous shot, because we are the Goats and we are simply marvellous, that’s M-A-R-V-E-L-L-O-U-S – super effort that.

4th Grade “Suddenly Sydenham” 2006/2007 Annual Team Report

It was a pretty rough year for results, as it is most years. The team often lost by 1 or 2 wickets. We enjoyed ourselves during the season with close games occasional brilliance in the field and with the many fill-ins throughout the year.

Normand Lee was our player of the year for his 373 runs and 21 wickets.

Highlights for the season were…

· Scott Marsden getting run out without facing a ball · A brilliant catch at silly mid on by Tom Appleton · Normand Lee finally hitting a 6 after 7 years with us · John Carter and James Marsh having the best bowling averages of 12 and 13 respectively even though they were fill-ins · Scott and Matthew Davies stand for the last wicket of 50ish off 25ish balls · Geordie Dann trying to hit a 6 off the first ball of the game and getting bowled · James and Geordie Dann’s partnership of 64 for the last wicket off 45 balls with James scoring 1 · Sebastian Parr’s usual antics on and off the field Suddenly Sydenham will be back next season with the same boys to hopefully improve on the last 2 years of poor performances. Maybe a slight reshuffle in the higher management of the team though.

This season was a well contested battle in 5th grade. We faced some formidable opponents as in Parklands and Marist Fozzies, but also some who lacked the cricketing spirit, such as Lancaster Park Woolston (the nemesis). These teams were challenging but we came together as a team and overcome most challenges, getting into the semi finals in our first season in 5th grade. The Sydenham 5th grade team were well liked by opposition teams for our spirit and respect of the etiquette of cricket.

The season started well, since it was our first year in fifth grade we didn’t know the teams as well as usual, but we ended up beating every team at least once, except for parklands which we only ever played on semi raining day’s at their home ground on an artificial. This was too much for the more lazy members of the team, which is unfortunately must of us.

We had a lot of close games and a lot of the guys have improved over the off season through indoor cricket and training. Jamie (the Beast) Lewis was the fittest he’d been in years, a regular Jonty Rhodes in the field (as opposed to a particular guy in the Bermuda world cup team… you know the guy I mean…) unfortunately he got a cracked rib from a short ball (retired hurt on 18 and came back to get 56 not out in a game we won by 20 runs) and was out for 3 weeks. Then two weeks later twisted his knee in the field, requiring surgery and was out for the rest of the season. He’ll be back.

Other players deserve mention, Abraham Atherton turned out to be our go-to man for knocking over partnerships and got 39 wickets by the end of the season, Cameron Hatcher and his nagging little left arm in-swingers managed to support him well also. Batters such as Dan Periam were consistent at the top of the order, despite not going all the way he was valuable to set up the platform for lower order batters and brothers Josh Periam Luke Periam. A lot of players this year got decent scores, which is a welcome change from the one-bat wonder where if your specialist drops… you’re screwed.

Overall, we were happy with our performance in the season and are looking to take out the trophy next year.

HOSPITAL PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT

It is difficult to think of a more dramatic start to a season than that of 7th October 2006. My heartfelt thanks to Dave and Ruth Jardine, Richard Laing, Sumit Raniga, Tristan Pettit, Prasanna and the resuscitation team who demonstrated consummate skill and without doubt kept the writer alive and hopefully able to fight another day. People have said that from now on I should model my bowling style on that of Chris Gayle! I trust there will be no repetitions. I would also like to acknowledge the many kind messages I had from members of the Cardinals team and other sides in the Presidents grade competition. Evidently you can still turn down LBW decisions and retain friends!

The overall team performance was an improvement on the previous season but was marred by the fact that we had to default three times. But for this we would have had a good position on the table. Once again we beat the eventual grade winner and we do have a reputation for being ‘spoilers’.

Unfortunately the book went missing for two games and averages are on the basis of the available information. Despite this the batting was stronger than last season and the return of Bernard Fanning was much welcomed. Hamish Conway was another strong performer. Tony Danenberg was a welcome addition to the squad. He not only made valuable batting, fielding and wicketkeeping contributions but proved to be an excellent team man. The two Nicks, Childs and Robinson were only occasionally available but made useful contributions with both bat and ball. Other useful batting contributions came from Adrian Balasingam, Richard Laing, Tristan Pettit and the evergreen Tony Waters.

The bowling was well led by Hamish Conway who was particularly effective in his second spells. Chris Warren bowled well but without much luck, Sumit Raniga, Jim Boyd, Bernard Fanning, Jonny Smart and Prasanna all had useful spells. Jared Kilday proved to be a good find with both bat and ball and if Steve Chambers continues his resurgence the bowling attack next season should be varied and penetrative.

As usual the fielding was a mixed bag but some excellent catches were taken. Dave Jardine, Tony Danenberg and Kaushik Nilakant all performed wicket keeping duties with distinction.

We look forward to the new season with eager anticipation

CARDINALS PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT

When Dick Sainsbury sunk to his knees in the first game of the season and exited the ground in an ambulance with the game abandoned, we should have known it was going to be one of those years. We were reasonably competitive for most of the year, and 3-4 games out from the finish we were still in with a chance for second. However, our late season losses to OBC Blue and Riccarton, both of whom we should have beaten based on form, saw us slip back to finish a disappointing 4th. That was doubly disappointing considering that none of the other top sides could really dominate the competition as East’s have in the past, and a slightly more consistent run could just as easily won the title.

Strangely, when we were really struggling for players in the period up to Christmas we only lost two games, both to the eventual top teams Easts and St Albans. However, when availability was better after our concentration and performances dropped off as the season wore on.

The batting was totally dominated by Ken Julian before Christmas (with some assistance from Kev Moore), and then by Ken and Ewen Spence thereafter. Ken had an extremely productive year averaging just under 100 and was ultra consistent with half of his innings topping more than 50. Many of those innings were match winners as he regularly held the innings together in setting totals. Spency was also a revelation and provided Ken with good competition for Batsmen of the Year, which Ken deservedly won together with Player of the Year. Ewen was often the rock of many of our innings when he became available after Christmas, and inevitably if neither Ken or Spency didn’t play, or get a score between them, our batting floundered.

And that suggests that the rest of us had modest years – Kev Moore certainly looked up to it in the early stages of the season but then suffered an injury that took him out of the middle part – encouragingly for next season, he looked good on his eventual return and ended up averaging close to 30. However, the other batsmen struggled to average much more than 20 – the Skipper had a disappointing year with the bat, Bert Walker took some time to evolve from a bowler in his past life to living off his performances with the bat but started and finished with some good innings. Mark Paget and Gareth Martin had regular horse and work commitments that severely limited the number of games they played. They were both badly missed with their modest returns with bat a reflection of the spasmodic nature of the games they played in which they were never really able to get into any sort of nick. Newcomer Darryn Williams struggled a little with the bat but didn’t get a lot of opportunities.Andrew Reeves, recovering from a rugby knee injury, had to develop into more of an allrounder this year but performed admirably resulting in his award as the team’s Most Improved Player.

Grant Adamson joined the team this year and made an immediate impact. In two successive matches he was instrumental in turning around difficult situations with the bat which eventually bought us wins, and he was outstanding in his main role as keeper. His performance behind the stumps greatly assisted the confidence of the bowlers and resulted in his team award of Fielder of the Year. That said, the fielding in general was less than impressive at times, particularly in the air.

The bowling was again our strength with Julien van Dyke and Mike Dolden the pick of them. Julien again deservedly won Bowler of the Year with his 27 wickets at 15. Doldy put in another of his typically consistently competitive years, and often in tandem with a parsimonious Ken Julian, put the squeeze on the opposition middle order batting that won us several games. Bill Nicholson was himself ultra consistent, and although his return of wickets was modest, his 3.5 RPO ensured that the opposition top order rarely got off to a flyer. Andrew Reeves, Stu Simpson, Kevin Congdon, and Jason Millar all put in some good bowling performances over the season to round out a useful, and probably the most varied, bowling attack in the competition.

Socially it was a very enjoyable year with most players making the effort to stop for a beer after the game, and everyone that could be there attended the end of year team dinner and awards night. The games were all played with good spirit with the only source of friction driven by a couple of clubs that abused the President grade rules and regularly played large numbers of under 35 year olds throughout the season. The age issue is one that has to be taken in hand by the CCA as it continues to force some players into premature retirement. With this in mind, despite having a mortgage on the competition in recent years, I suspect that most of the other clubs enjoyed seeing Easts Gold again pip the youngsters from St Albans for the title.

On a final note it was good to see Dick Sainsbury back on his feet by season’s end, and as a team we look forward to renewing the battle with his tidy little medium pacers next season.

WOMEN’S FIRST GRADE TEAM REPORT

The 2006/07 season was a tough one for the Sydenham women’s section. With changes to the format of the women’s lower grade competitions we ending up losing our 2nd grade team this season and we struggled for numbers in our 1st grade team.

We had a solid core of 9 players who I would like to commend on their commitment and determination throughout the season. Due to their efforts we finished a commendable 2nd in the competition.

I would like to say a big thank you to all those that filled in for us over the course of the season, especially the 3rd grade girls.

Also thanks to Mike Shrimpton for coming down and coaching us each week, the improvement I saw in those that went to practice over the course of the season was amazing.

Lastly thanks to Andrew Chisnall and Ian Hill for coming down and umpiring our games.

Cheers.

Erin Hill Captain

SYDENHAM JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT

As the club has been without a Convenor this season, this annual report has been written by Kerry Constable, Gear Manager and Youth Cricket Grade Manager.

A number of CJCA playing condition changes happened this season which saw the introduction of a Super Eight and a 20/20 grade being played at Junior Average level.

Also, for all Secondary School grade cricket, the CCA has changed the playing season from the traditional “October-March” season, to a “calendar year” season. The first full season under the new dates commenced in late January 2007. Awards were therefore somewhat diluted for the interim “half season” to December 2006, but it is worth noting that one of our 3rd Grade Black players Christo Pieters, carried off the CCA Bowler’s trophy.

This year the CJCA also proposed a change of season dates to a “calendar year”. Our committee was unanimously against such a change and had circulated our reasoning and objections to the CJCA and all of its member clubs. We can now report that a groundswell of opposition has defeated this proposal at the recent CJCA meeting.

Facilities The newly completed practise nets at Sydenham Park have proved to be a valuable and well used resource over the summer for the hard ball teams. Our thanks to the Sydenham Trust and the senior club for providing these world class facilities.

The club still has an artificial wicket at Sydenham Park that has been unused for the last 3 seasons at this stage its future is undecided.

Coaching It was pleasing to see that the season’s specialist skills clinics were well patronised this year. The clinics were run by Kevin McGowan and Chris Ferguson every Monday and Friday afternoon at Sydenham Park and have been very successful in raising the skill level of our young players.

Girls Cricket There were four teams fielded this year, which was rewarding considering the desertion of a number of the previous season’s experienced players to another club. Ø 2 girls made the CCA U17 rep’ team Ø 1 girl made the CCA U15 rep’ team Ø 4 girls made the CJCA rep’ teams

Gear Our thanks to the CJCA for the considerable number of helmets, batting pads and elbow pads which they supplied to our club at the beginning of the season. This was as a result of a substantial funding grant received for protective gear, to be shared out amongst all the CJCA member clubs.

Club Size We continue to be the largest Junior Cricket Club in Christchurch, having fielded the following teams this season: 4 Girls teams 7 Kiwi Friday night 6 Kiwi Saturday morning 7 20/20 (Junior Average) 4 Super 8 (Junior Average) 7 Junior Traditional 9 Senior Traditional 5 Secondary School grade teams 49 Total

Our enrolments were slightly up from the previous year of 46 teams.

Rep’ Players Additional to the above mentioned girl’s representatives, the club was again well represented in the boy’s tournaments: 19 boys played in the CJCA regional tournament in November, of which, 8 of these boys went on to play in the CJCA pre-Christmas Rep matches, and, 1 player went on to play in the Primary Schools tournament in January 2007

Also, in the February/March 2007 regional tournaments, the club had quite a few players selected as follows:- 24 players in the Regional teams 12 players in the Canterbury teams

Committee For many years now the junior club has been fortunate to have a strong dedicated team working on its committee. This has ensured the success of the club by providing the organisational back-up required to make it run smoothly. Although the committee has operated without a Convenor this season, this has not affected the performance of the club, as the workload was shared amongst the committee members. However the club needs and wants this position filled for the 2007/2008 season.

Also our thanks to Barbara Turner, who amongst many other committee duties filled the roll of acting secretary, until a replacement was found late in the season.

Special thank you To all of the clubs volunteer coaches and team managers without whom we just couldn’t operate To the committee for their tireless efforts in providing the support to enable the teams to perform on field To the players for giving it their all and making us proud To the supporters and parents who came and supported our teams each week

SYDENHAM PARK SPORTS COMPLEX REPORT

A board was established to manage the sports complex on the park. The assets consist of the pavilion, chattels and the practice facilities on the old tennis court area.

The board is Cricket Andrew Chisnall Dave Gallop David Heard Hockey Dennis Cox Graeme Cox Steve Smith

Negotiations have been held with the Christchurch City Council with respect to the lease of the practice facility area. It has been agreed to have one lease covering both the pavilion & practice areas. It is currently being prepared.

After some discussions the Council have allowed the Complex to have advertising on the practice area. Negotiations are underway with various interested parties regarding advertising. This will hopefully enable the complex to be self sufficient financially.

As from 1 October 2006 the complex is responsible for financing security telephone, insurance and repairs and maintenance. The respective clubs to be responsible in their own season for power rubbish removal and security callouts.

Plans have been drawn up to have a facility on the practice area which will include a storage area for each club and a room to hold 20 people for coaching purposes. The plan is in the process of being costed and funding applied for.

In addition plans have been prepared by Robin Vesty Architect to improve the pavilion. Included are two unisex self contained changing rooms improved natural lighting, outside viewing area and updating of the toilets and the kitchen.

The insurance is being updated to ensure adequate cover of the complex and clubs assets.

SYDENHAM CRICKET CLUB TRUST

CHAIRMANS REPORT

The 2006/2007 season was satisfactory from a financial viewpoint. The excess of income of $11372 exceeds the Trusts aim of $10000 annually.

The Statement of Financial Performance has been prepared on a GST exclusive basis compared with a GST inclusive basis for 2006/2007.

Sponsorship received is lower as the only Capital items were the automatic machine and nets.

The raffle was better supported this season and included a contribution of $600 from the junior section. Our thanks to Bill Thomson for organising the raffle.

During the season Wally Radford & Diane Richardson sold the Sandridge Hotel. On behalf of the Club we record our thanks for their support over a period of nine years and wish them well in their retirement.

Also we are indebted to the continuing support of Ray & Angela Browlee Tuskers Beckenham and Russell McKenzie St Martins New World

The Harris Family Trust continued with their contribution and we express our gratitude. Graham Harris also organised the first prize in the raffle. Since balance date the Harris Family Trust have advised that they will replace the annual contribution with a one off grant of $60000. After discussions with Graham & Linda Harris and the Club it has been agreed that a separate Trust within the Trust will be established and will be called The Harris Family Trust. The interest will be allocated each year to a specific purpose to be decided by the Club. For example it could for a scholarship or overseas travel or accommodation. On behalf of the Club we record our gratitude to Graham & Linda Harris for their outstanding gesture.

We record our thanks to Andy Inness Cricket Express who entered into an agreement for advertising with the accounts recording two years.

The Accounts for The Sydenham Park Sports Complex record the pavilion in their assets. Included under sponsorship not spent is a video machine for coaching. A TV set is being funded to enable coaching staff to fully utilize both the bowling machine and the video. The sports complex was officially opened by local MP and cricket member Jim Anderton and was well attended by both clubs. Plans have been completed for a facility on the sports complex area which will include storage for both clubs and a room for coaching purposes. This will enable all playing gear to be housed outside of the pavilion and will provide coaching on site. It will be covered by an alarmed security system.

The Trust is meeting with Paul Hartland the Clubs Honorary Solicitor regards formalising the Trust. With Assets soon to exceed $160000 it is considered that a Trust Deed should be established.

Plans are being drawn up by Robin Vesty Architect with the brief of 1) Two self contained unisex changing rooms. 2) Improve the natural lighting. 3) Improve the toilet facilities for men and provide toilet facilities for women. 4) Improve kitchen & bar facilities. 5) Provide a viewing area upstairs. Plans will be available at the AGM.

A Consolidated summary of the clubs activities for the year is also included. Before depreciation an operating profit of $21251 is recorded and must be considered to be satisfactory. As advised previously cricket is an expensive sport to fund.

The Trust is confident that funding for the ensuing season will be achieved with $54910 being received to date.

On your behalf I express our thanks to members of the Trust David Heard, Michael Pearcy, Richie Thomas, Bill Thomson, Bert Walker.

In conclusion members of the Trust do not receive any remuneration.
