  • Nielsen Music Year-End Report Canada 2016
NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 Copyright © 2017 The Nielsen Company 1 Welcome to the annual Nielsen Music Year End Report for Canada, providing the definitive 2016 figures and charts for the music industry. And what a year it was! The year had barely begun when we were already saying goodbye to musical heroes gone far too soon. David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, George Michael ... the list goes on. And yet, despite the sadness of these losses, there is much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall consumption of album sales, song sales and audio on-demand streaming volume is up 5% over 2015, fueled by an incredible 203% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. 2016 also marked the highest vinyl sales total to date. It was an incredible year for Canadian artists, at home and abroad. Eight different Canadian artists had #1 albums in 2016, led by Drake whose album Views was the biggest album of the year in Canada as well as the U.S. The Tragically Hip had two albums reach the top of the chart as well, their latest release and their 2005 best of album, and their emotional farewell concert in August was something we’ll remember for a long time. Justin Bieber, Billy Talent, Céline Dion, Shawn Mendes, Leonard Cohen and The Weeknd also spent time at #1. Break out artist Alessia Cara as well as accomplished superstar Michael Buble also enjoyed successes this year.

  • Biography Hit Man
DAVID FOSTER “I believe that everyone gets three rounds in their life,” says musician, songwriter, composer, arranger, producer, and recording artist David Foster. “For me, two are completed and I’m on to Round Three. I think you have to change it up every round. My mantra is retreat and attack in another direction, which I’ve done twice. Now I'm going to do it again.” Foster’s first round was as a studio musician, arranger, and recording artist. His second round was becoming one of the most successful songwriters and record producers in history — shepherding albums that have collectively sold in the hundreds of millions. This period of his four-decade career also found him creating The David Foster Foundation and volunteering his time and talent to over 400 charities, as well as becoming a household name as a performer throughout Asia where he tours annually. For his third round, Foster is gearing up to take on Broadway with several projects. These include writing the music for a new musical about the iconic, animated character Betty Boop, which will be directed by Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell. He is writing the music for a musical based on the Amy Bloom novel and New York Times bestseller Lucky Us, directed by Tony Award-nominee Sheryl Kaller. Foster is also developing a scripted narrative one-man show based on the story of his career that he will perform himself. And finally, he is gearing up to write an original show with Oscar-nominated actor Chazz Palminteri that Foster describes as “a cross between The Bodyguard and The Phantom of the Opera.” As one of the most illustrious composers of our time, Foster’s skill set of creating hits, writing indelible melodies, and building dramatic moments, has primed him for this third round.

  • Introduction
Introduction Every May, 200 million people turn on their TVs or log on to the internet, not just to watch but to be part of the Eurovision Song Contest, an extravaganza of song, dance, stagecraf and politics. Politics? Te European Broadcasting Union (EBU), who run the contest, insist it is non-political. Tey ban songs like Georgia’s 2009 ‘We Don’t Wanna Put In’ (‘put in’ was sung ‘poot-in’ to make sure everyone got the point) to enforce this. Tey are, I feel, right to do so: the pretence must be kept up. But the Eurovision Song Contest is political to its thigh-high, spangly boots. It is now and, as I plan to show in this book, it always has been. Tere’s politics in the songs. Not allowed through the front door, it sneaks in through the back. Te winner of the 2016 contest, ‘1944’, was a passionate denunciation of Stalin’s deportation of the Crimean Tatars – and by extension, an equally passionate denunciation of Russia’s annexation of the peninsula in 2014. In other years, we’ve had anti-colonialism, radical Socialism, Tatcherism, a marching song from Ukraine’s Euromaidan movement . In the 1970s, a Eurovision* song even started a revolution. Tere’s politics in the voting, with blocs of nations supporting each other’s songs. It drove Sir Terry Wogan to distraction, but most Eurovision fans love that moment when the Cypriot announcer says with a straight face, ‘And our twelve points go to . .’ It’s all part of the ritual. It also tells us something important about Europe.
