Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 2 District Governor’s Message We are already one month into the Lions year; a lot has happened in that month. Lois and I have been to our first Lions International Convention in Milan where we gathered with thousands of Lions from many different cultures to witness the induction of our new International President Dr Yung Yul Choi from Korea, and all 750 plus DGEs inducted by President Choi. This was a brief but wonderful occasion to finally become district 202Ds District Governor. Now the real work and challenges that go with it begins. It was just incredible to be part of the International parade of nations through some of Milan’s central city streets mixing with like-minded people many of whom were dressed in their national colourful costumes. This added such a vibrancy and diversity to the parade. President Choi has focused on the importance of servant leadership, and the diversity of cultures being one, and working together to make an impact in the world as Lions. Our communities are culturally diverse so there is a challenge for us to also be culturally diverse in our club membership. Congratulations to all club office holders, without you stepping up to these positions Lions could not exist. May you have a positive fun filled year serving those in need and making your communities a better place to live. Thanks to those who responded positively to being on the 202D Cabinet and also those taking up the challenge of non-cabinet positions. I appreciate the effort and time commitment you have given. My theme for the year “REACHING OUT TO……” is left open so you can include the many options of any service project you undertake during the year. We do have many people who are lonely and the statistics shown in our Contact July 2019 on page 12 shows that as Lions this is one area, we can make a difference in our communities. Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 3 District Governor’s Message cont; DG Club visits are now underway by myself and VDGs Louise and Megan, we all look forward to meeting members on your turf. If we can assist clubs in any way please just ask. Thank you, club Presidents and cabinet members, for attending the Presidents Luncheon held at Patea last weekend. It was nice to meet everyone, sharing stories and fellowship together also I am sure we all learnt something about the environment and electricity from Dr Harry Clark. Cabinet met after the luncheon; the following are some salient points.  202D commenced the year with 1101 members which is 37 down on last year. This may see a small increase in dues over the year of $2.00 which will be reviewed in November 2019 to see how membership is tracking.  Multiple District membership is at 9136 this is at a serious all time low and will have an impact on the draft budget.  202D district treasurer will share a Direct Debit Proposal at Zone meetings  202D will not participate in the Multiple District Road show.  Multiple District Secretary position has been advertised with 4 candidates being short listed.  Multiple District directories are available in PDF format. Please contact our National office for a free copy to be emailed or a hard copy at a cost of $7.50.

It is my great pleasure to address the Lion community for the first time as your International President. As we enter a new Lion year I have high hopes for us. My focus during my presidency is on fostering diversity in service. After all, there are more than 1.4 million Lions around the world, and each of us is unique. And every one matters. This means that we have to do more than just recognize what makes us different. We have to embrace it. There is a path I walk in my hometown of Busan, South Korea. I wake up early, before sunrise, and walk. It clears my head, and it’s good for my spirit. I particularly enjoy watching the change from darkness to light. When I begin the day I am in the dark. As I walk, my mind clears and the sky brightens. Over the course of that walk, how I see the world is, literally, transformed. It’s always interesting to see something from another vantage point. Whether it’s in a new light or from someone else’s perspective. Often, you see things you couldn’t see before. Let your fellow Lions and your community be the sun. Let them shine light on what you may not have seen. You may not agree with how they see things, but only by looking at things clearly in the light of day can we hope to find common ground. And perhaps among all those points of view you’ll be able to see solutions to issues your community faces that you hadn’t been able to see before. I truly believe that by embracing diversity we will grow— as Lions and as people. Here’s to the beginning of a new year of serving through diversity. Sincerely, Dr. Jung-Yul Choi International President, Lions Clubs International

Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 8 District News A REQUEST TO ALL CLUBS FROM YOUR ALMONERS We took over this role for the last Lions year and have been asked to carry on for the 2019-2020 by District Governor Roy. Last year we asked for every Club’s support to make this position an informative role for all members. The process for when a Lions member dies was sent to all Clubs and we are sure this improved most Clubs response to us.

May we also suggest that each Club purchase a supply of the Remembrance Patches from the Rongotea Club. Your Secretary would then always have them on hand if one of your members dies. The cost is only $25.00 for 100. However ---- Could we please be advised if a spouse, parent or child of a Lion member also passes away. All we need is the name and the address to send a card to. It will also be a small token of goodwill from the District Governor and the Lions of the District.

This is also very valuable information for DG Roy as he visits the Clubs. But ….. we want to know the good things happening for members too --- A special Wedding Anniversary, 50 years or more as a Lions Member, private achievements by members, a special birthday etc. We send the card, notify the Contact Editor and when something is published – someone will take pride in seeing their name in print and will appreciate the recognition. Likewise, if a member is in hospital, we would like to be able to send a Get Well card. We ask if all Clubs will take this on board – which will help us to have an informative year ahead. I joined Lions in Pahiatua in 1985 (sponsored by Murray Neilson) and transferred to Rongotea & District Lions in 1989 when we shifted to the Manawatu. I am the Youth Director in my club. I am a retired primary school teacher and Principal. I am married to Ellise, also a teacher, and we have three adult children (who live in Auckland, New Plymouth and Dunedin) and three grandchildren- Jack, Fern and Freddie. I am looking forward to hearing from Lions about all the various youth activities which clubs are actively promoting and supporting as well as informing clubs about all the opportunities which are available to young people and which are being promoted by the Lions organisation. I am also currently collecting the names of youth spokespeople in zones 1, 2 and 3 so that direct communication can take place, both to and from the youth spokespeople in each zone 1, 2 & 3 club. Please contact me at [email protected] with the name of your youth spokesperson ( if you haven’t already done so). Thanks. Lions promote many engaging youth activities and as youth are the future of Lions, it is vital that we offer them the opportunities and

involve them in as many of these activities as we can. Yours in Lionism

Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 11 What’s Lions Loneliness in Nearly one in three older New Zealanders spend their days alone. Age Concern is struggling to cope with a record number of requests for help, and has urged New Zealanders to check on older neighbours. The older person is the one that misses out because of the fact that everyone has to work, because they can't pay the mortgage off on one wage now. They just don't have the time. Nationally, 30 per cent of the nearly 37,000 seniors assessed last year reported they spent eight hours or more alone during the day. Another measure is loneliness. Nationally, 22 per cent felt lonely. Mid- Central and Whanganui DHBs had the highest proportion of lonely seniors, at 28 per cent. Forty-six per cent of people receiving home care last year lived alone, and Whanganui is the highest at 59 percent. The older population could be viewed as a triangle. Most are doing well but for those towards the pointy end, life was "really miserable" – and that portion is growing. (Video) While you have others who have got a bit of money and their health and mobility, the time is going to come when all those people are going to move into that triangle. And that triangle is going to swell, and it's going to get swollen with people, because of the ageing population. A lot of it is really trying to understand what brings people joy … could we get someone to visit with a pet? Could they join them up with a group of people who go and watch rugby etc? Lions Clubs should consider a visiting service project, which arranges for members and volunteers to visit older people who feel socially isolated. Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 12 Cabinet Briefings. LCIF Report We are now well into our new Lions Year and, from my perspective, the new Fundraising year for our Foundation LCIF. Let’s have a look at how we fared over this past year from a fundraising point of view. Firstly, a very big THANK YOU to the following 21 Clubs who donated over the past twelve months: Bell Block Districts, Bell Block Puketapu, Eltham, Hawera Mt View, Inglewood, Kairanga, Kaponga, Manaia and Districts, New Plymouth Koru, Normanby and Districts, Opunake Lakeside, PN Fitzherbert, PN Heartland, PN Middle Disrict, PN Papaeioa Rose City, Rahoutu-Pungarehu, Stratford, Toko and Districts, Waitara and Wanganui. Included with these Clubs are a number of individual donations. If any Club did donate and are not on this list, please get back to me so we can get any anomalies sorted. A commendable total of $US12,510.27, an increase of $US3,296. The only disappointing figure from my point of view is that the number of Clubs donating has dropped by 6, when I was hoping that more Clubs might have donated rather than less. In part, I take responsibility for this as I was unable to visit as many Clubs as I had wished over the last 3 months of the year. I hope to remedy that this year and would like invitations to visit clubs as guest speaker. My presentation takes approx. 30 minutes and I am happy to answer any questions. I believe that there are still many members who are not totally familiar with what our Foundation is and how it operates – the presentation is designed so that clubs can make a more informed decision on whether to contribute. Please contact me on [email protected] for any information/date to visit. Phil (LCIF Coordinator) Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 13 Cabinet Briefings Cont; LLOYD MORGAN LIONS CLUBS CHARITABLE TRUST Thank you to the Clubs who have made their donations to the Lloyd Morgan Trust during this year. We didn’t quite reach the same target as last year but the Trust is very grateful for the donations from all but 5 Clubs. Thanks also to DG Lynette, and VDGs Roy and Louise for promoting the Lloyd Morgan Trust during your visits. I will endeavour to visit these 5 Clubs during the year to encourage participation. As we have now started a new Lions’ year, Clubs may be considering how the Trust can help with an upcoming project so please contact me by email (am away till mid-September) and I can arrange for application forms to be sent to you while checking that projects meet the criteria for a Grant or Loan. I am now Chairman of the Grants and Loans team so will process applications super-fast! During the year clubs recognised members or someone in the community by presenting them with an award such as Life Membership, Honoured Recognition or Friend of the Trust. Here are the stats: Friend of the Trust 22 Honoured Recognition 8 Life Membership 8 Benefactor 1 Honour Roll 12 Please Note: Donations to the Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust are not held in credit for clubs from year to year, so only in the year that your donation is made can it be used for one of these recognitions. During the year 16 Clubs throughout New Zealand had applications to the Trust processed, totalling $94,000, and there are no current Loans. Only one application was received from District 202D – New Plymouth Pakeke for assistance with the Ventilator for New Plymouth St John’s rescue team. Club contributions play a very important role in our NZ Lions Organisation as all Club donations go into the Capital Fund, and in this time of lower interest rates, it is necessary to keep the Capital Fund of The Trust growing in order to help maintain the assistance to clubs. Congratulations to Chris and his Board for the excellent work they did last year. My theory is that charity begins at home. Some of the best work we do is helping individuals, groups and organisations within our locality. The club has supported a number of youngsters over the years and I would really like to see this great work continue. I’m sure that our community will benefit from the increased personal and life skills of these individuals. Thank you to everyone who has supported me so far and who I am sure will continue to support me in my term as the President of the Rongotea and District Lions. Keeping up to date with what is happening in our Lions world. International Convention has been taking place in Milan last week and tonight’s menu is a bit of a nod to Italy. It has been interesting to follow it on Instagram. Times are definitely changing and Lions are stepping up to the challenge. I feel there has been a lot of hard work put into bringing Lions into the modern times. Hopefully it continues to get more user friendly and we take the opportunities to learn new things. I will be attending the Presidents dinner on the 27th and I’m hoping I will come back with fresh ideas. I’m sure my year as President will just fly by and I hope I serve the club well. I’ve decided to run with the theme Change for good, being the first female President of Opunake Lions is definitely a change. But not everything needs to change, some things are fine the way they are. Upon entering the confessional, she said “Forgive me, Father for I have sinned.’ The priest said, ‘Confess your sins and be forgiven.’ The young women said, ‘Last night my boyfriend made mad passionate love to me seven times,’ The priest thought long and hard and then said, ‘Squeeze seven lemons into a glass and then drink the juice.’ The young women asked, ‘Will this cleanse me of my sins?’ The priest said, ‘No, but it will wipe that smile off your face.’ ####################################################################################### Kairanga----Therapy When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a tirade listing every problem they had ever had in all the years they had been married. On and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she endured. Finally, after allowing this for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and after asking the wife to stand, he embraced and kissed her long and passionately as her husband watched - with a raised eye-brow. The woman shut up and quietly sat down in a daze. The therapist turned to the husband and said, "This is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week. Can you do this?" "Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesday ...... but I fish on Fridays. *************************************************************************************** Waitara Paddy is in court, and after an 8 hour trial he pleads guilty. Over a short number of years, his fame grew and soon people from all over Ireland were coming to the town of Miltown Malbay, in County Clare, to get him to paint their likenesses. One day, a beautiful young English woman arrived at his house in a stretch limo and asked if he would paint her in the nude. This being the first time anyone had made such a request he was a bit perturbed, particularly when the woman told him that money was no object; in fact, and she was willing to pay up to 10,000 pounds. Not wanting to get into any marital strife, he asked her to wait while he went into the house to confer with Mary, his wife. They talked much about the Rightness and Wrongness of it. It was hard to make the decision but finally his wife agreed, on one condition. In a few minutes he returned. "T’would be me pleasure to paint yer portrait, missus," he said "The wife says it's okay. "I'll paint you in the nude all right; but I have to at least leave me socks on, so I have a place to wipe me brushes." ********************************************************** NP Pakeke A motorist was unknowingly caught in an automated speed trap that measured his speed using radar and photographed his car. He later received in the mail a ticket for $ 140.00 and a photo of his car. Instead of payment, he sent the police department a photograph of $140.00. Several days later, he received a letter from the police that contained another picture, this time of handcuffs. He immediately mailed in his $140.00.
