As the first documentary filmmaker to earn $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales, giant-screen film producer/director Greg MacGillivray joined an elite club—approximately 100 filmmakers—who have attained this level of success. Daily Variety’s Iain Blair writes, “The film business is full of showy sprinters: filmmakers and movies that flash by as they ring up impressive box office numbers, only to leave little of substance in their wake. Then there are the dedicated long-distance specialists, like Greg MacGillivray, whose thought-provoking documentaries —including EVEREST, TO THE ARCTIC, TO FLY! and THE LIVING Sea—play for years, even decades at a time.

    Mary Murillo Also Known As: Mary O’Connor, Mary Velle Lived: January 22, 1888 - February 4, 1944 Worked as: adapter, film company managing director, scenario writer, screenwriter, theatre actress Worked In: France, United Kingdom: England, United States by Christina Petersen In March 1918, Moving Picture World heralded British screenwriter Mary Murillo as a “remarkable example” of “the meteoric flights to fame and fortune which have marked the careers of many present day leaders in the motion picture profession” (1525). This was more than just promotional hyperbole, since, in just four years, Murillo had penned over thirty features, including a highly successful adaptation of East Lynne (1916) starring Theda Bara and the original story for Cheating the Public (1918), “which proved a sensation” at its New York debut according to Moving Picture World (1525). Murillo wrote or adapted over fifty films from 1913 to 1934 in the United States, England, and France, including slapstick comedies, melodramas, fairy tale adaptations, and vehicles for female stars such as Bara, Ethel Barrymore, Clara Kimball Young, Olga Petrova, and Norma Talmadge. As a scenarist, her range included several films focused on contemporary issues—gender equality, women’s suffrage, economic progressivism, and labor reform—while others, such as the child-oriented adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk (1917), seem to have been meant to appeal as pure escapism. In the latter half of her career, Murillo left the United States for England where she joined several ventures, but never equaled her American output. Born in January 1888 and educated at the Sacred Heart Convent in Roehampton, England, Murillo immigrated to the United States in 1908 at the age of nineteen (“Mary Murillo, Script Writer” 1525; McKernan 2015, 80).

    The Irish in American Cinema 1910 – 1930: Recurring Narratives and Characters THOMAS JAMES SCOTT, University of Ulster ABSTRACT This paper will consider cinematic depictions of the Irish between 1910 and 1930. American cinema during these years, like those that preceded them, contained a range of stereotypical Irish characters. However, as cinema began to move away from short sketches and produce longer films, more complex plots and refined Irish characters began to appear. The onscreen Irish became vehicles for recurring themes, the majority of which had uplifting narratives. This paper will discuss common character types, such as the Irish cop and domestic servant, and subjects such as the migration narrative, the social reform narrative and the inter-ethnic comedy. It will also briefly consider how Irish depictions in the 1910s and 1920s compared to earlier representations. While the emphasis will be on films viewed at archives, including the University of California, Los Angeles Film and Television Archive, or acquired through private and commercial sellers, the paper will also reflect on some films that are currently considered lost. KEYWORDS Irish, cinema, representation, stereotypes, migrants. Introduction Feature Productions’ early ‘talkie’ Irish Fantasy (Orville O. Dull, 1929) should be considered important for two reasons. One, it is one of the earliest Irish-themed musicals to survive in its entirety. Two, it was produced by William Cameron Menzies, who would go on to win an Academy Award for his production design on MGM’s Gone With the Wind (Victor Fleming, 1939). The film centres on an old Irish man explaining the meaning of the three leaves of the shamrock to his uninformed grandson, who remarks ‘sure they’re only weeds.’ The first leaf signifies what the Irish are, ‘happy-go-lucky with warm blood in our hearts.’ The second symbolises the big hearts of the Irish who were forced to migrate to America.

  • The John Ford Collection
    The John Ford Collection The John Ford collection of manuscripts at the Lilly Library offers a view of Ford's entire motion picture career, from the silent era to his last movie in 1966. The material in this collection was acquired from Ford's children and grandson after his death . It was used extensively, but not exhaustively, by Ford's grandson Dan Ford in writing his biography Pappy: The Life of John Ford and includes much of the research material accumulated by Dan Ford for his book. The collection covers the years from 1906 to 1976 and contains approximately seven thousand items, of which twenty-five hundred are correspondence. John Ford was born Sean Aloysius Feeney in Portland, Maine, in 1895. He changed his name after joining his older brother Fran­ cis, who had taken the name of Ford, in Hollywood in 1913. He began his career as a prop man, stunt man, and actor, moving to directing in 1917 with a two-reeler entitled The Tornado. He spent the rest of his life directing films, through the transition from silents to sound, making over 130 in all and winning six Academy Awards. From 1917 until 1930 Ford directed at least 66 films, a great many of which were westerns starring the cowboy actor Harry Carey. Early in his career Ford was most often associated with Universal Studio but by the early twenties he was under contract to the Fox Film Corporation (later the Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation) until after World War II. It was at Fox that he had his first major success, with The Iron Horse in 1924.

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by De Montfort University Open Research Archive Stanley Kubrick: Producers and Production Companies Thesis submitted by James Fenwick In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy De Montfort University, September 2017 1 Abstract This doctoral thesis examines filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s role as a producer and the impact of the industrial contexts upon the role and his independent production companies. The thesis represents a significant intervention into the understanding of the much-misunderstood role of the producer by exploring how business, management, working relationships and financial contexts influenced Kubrick’s methods as a producer. The thesis also shows how Kubrick contributed to the transformation of industrial practices and the role of the producer in Hollywood, particularly in areas of legal authority, promotion and publicity, and distribution. The thesis also assesses the influence and impact of Kubrick’s methods of producing and the structure of his production companies in the shaping of his own reputation and brand of cinema. The thesis takes a case study approach across four distinct phases of Kubrick’s career. The first is Kubrick’s early years as an independent filmmaker, in which he made two privately funded feature films (1951-1955). The second will be an exploration of the Harris-Kubrick Pictures Corporation and its affiliation with Kirk Douglas’ Bryna Productions (1956-1962). Thirdly, the research will examine Kubrick’s formation of Hawk Films and Polaris Productions in the 1960s (1962-1968), with a deep focus on the latter and the vital role of vice-president of the company.
