After all, you’ve got much as a general primer, and not a scientific analysis.

AVERAGE TUITION PRICES This one may be the most important to our readers due to the fact that it can literally dictate whether or not your child will attend a certain school. Interestingly enough, according to our data, the most expensive grades to get your student through will be their elementary years. While an expensive tuition doesn’t necessarily mean the best education for your child’s unique needs and learning style, it is worth noting that these will be some of the most formative years in your child’s development, and could decide their trajectory for years to come. Cost given is per year.

AVERAGE CLASS SIZE This number has actually remained unchanged since last year, as has its correlating six to one student - teacher ratio. 19 It’s welcome news given that back in the 1980s, Brookings Institute conducted a study, one of the most credible to date, which found that students in classes with between 15 and 22 pupils and lower student - teacher ratios were three months ahead in their learning than students in larger classrooms. So while tuition price isn’t a definitive indicator of a school’s worth, the ability of teachers to provide each child with individualized attention and support certainly is.

SCHOLARSHIPS If the numbers surrounding average tuition prices are hanging over your head like a bleak cloud in the dead of winter, 50% then let this be your silver lining. Comparatively, 2017’s School Choice Guide had 55 percent of schools offering scholar- ship opportunities, and that number dropped to 40 percent in 2018, so things are looking up. Additionally, if you or your child would like some pointers on how to ace that scholarship application, check out our scholarship feature on p18!

We’re certainly not suggesting that you dedicate 40 hours a week to a world that feels like school, just without the class bells. Nevertheless, we are suggesting that you find something you’re passionate about and dig into it. After all, you never know what you might find.

16 beijingkids School Choice Guide 2020-2021 students. One of his findings was that most students love chicken nuggets. Instead of telling them to stop eating this junk food, he decided to show a documentary explaining how nuggets are made. His approach of “showing, not telling” has actually gotten students to pay more at- tention to the nutritional value of the food they eat. He even offers classes to educate students about the importance of healthy eating. By working directly with those it is serving, Chartwells makes an effort to ensure that its food is not only safe for consumption but also nutritious as well. Its method of making sure their food is safe for students is through the creation of the HSE (Health, Safety and Environ- ment) Department that inspects the ingredients from the suppliers it uses, and also monitors the meals itself once its served in the canteens. Chartwells’ chefs also use the System Analysis and Program system (SAP) to order ingredients for their menu. The SAP is used to decide which supplier is available for the schools and whether they deliver safe items after already being evaluated by the company. Along with food safety, Chartwells’ other main focus is the nutritional value of its meals. It has strict requirements on which ingredients are allowed to be present in their meals: items such as MSG, peanut oil, and horse beans are forbidden. Healthy cooking procedures also take place as meals are cooked with less oil and contain low salt and sugar content, and Chart- wells nutritionists' advice would normally be taken into consideration for their meal offers so students are receiving a balanced meal. Allergy control procedures are followed in the schools that Chartwells works with as the schools collect a list of known allergies from their student body and provide it to the catering management company so meals that can cause allergic reactions are not served. As important as nutritional food can be for students, it won’t mean much if they aren’t tasty Olivier Mallard enough for students to even try them. In order to break the monotony of canteen food that some students may expect to eat, Chartwells tries to make the dining experience of students exciting by holding theme day events such as Chinese Festival Day, Korean Food Day, or Mexican Food Day. Apart from these themed food events, it also holds an event known as Beyond Food in which its own chefs or guest chefs teach consumers how to make food such as pizza, cakes, or dumplings. Along with learning how to make food with the chefs, Chartwells nutritionists also teach classes for students to be better educated about the food they eat. Chartwells of Compass Group is just one example of a school food catering company serv- ing meals to the thousands of students enrolled in international schools around Beijing and elsewhere in the world. Just like Chartwells, many schools, parents, and catering companies are recognizing how important a safe, healthy, and delicious meal could be for students. As studies show how nutritious school meals are linked to higher performing academic results, the food students eat in schools will only continue to grow in importance as part of a child’s

Their students are immersed in arts, traditional culture, and a natural pace of life. They respect the development pace of each child and facilitate children’s growth according to individual characters and temperaments. The lead teacher is a PhD mom who specializes in psychology and arts.

stablished in 1994, Beijing BISS International School was the first International school in Chaoyang District, and was one of the first to be authorized to offer all three International Baccalaureate (IB) programs including PYP, MYP, and DP. Over the past 25 years, BISS has had excellent academic results. BISS is a family-style boutique school that puts students at the center. BISS considers all students and teachers as family and puts emphasis on interpersonal relationships. Since it is a small school, students are known by their peers, as well as by their teachers and administrators. Because students feel at home, they gain a great sense of trust and know that they receive support from all sides. Another advantage of a boutique school is that BISS provides students with more opportunities to shine in their own way. Students develop strong communication and leadership skills, they know they can participate in any activities, regardless of their skill level. They are involved in Student Council, publish their own newspaper, lead meetings and join all kinds of activities. With shared values and thanks to the strong support from the government, BISS and ETU Education (an education innovation project with its founding roots in both Silicon Valley and Beijing) have agreed on a comprehensive partnership so as to ensure the smooth operation of BISS moving forward. ETU will provide assistance to BISS in school operation, curriculum building, marketing, and admission, so as to provide best-quality education to families and students from different backgrounds. A PARENTS’ GUIDE TO OPEN HOUSE VISITS Navigating your way around Beijing’s international schools by Mina Yan

But before you’re overwhelmed by the At every open house you’ll be introduced to the C facilities and beliefs of the school. But be pre-pared gorgeous campuses, high-tech classrooms, and dedicated teachers, keep in mind who you’re really – don’t just listen to what the schools have to say, there for - your child. Choosing the right school ask the questions that’ll give you insight into where doesn’t mean finding the most expensive, the larg- the school really stands.

Educational Philosophy

Are they hands-on or do they promote exploratory independent learning? What’s the approach that their teach- ers take? Is it more traditional where the teachers lecture, or do they en- courage students to be immersed in the learning process? Extracurricular Activities

Don’t just focus on the academics. Look into what extracurriculars are offered at the school. If your child already has their own interests, inquire about those and see how well they’re sup-ported at the school. If they’ve yet to discover their extracurricu- lar passions, does the school offer a wide variety for them to explore?

102 beijingkids School Choice Guide 2020-2021 DIRECTORIES

Does your kid like the school?

While this seems like a no-brainer, it’s necessary to remind yourself that ultimately you’re look-ing for a school for your child. They’re the one who’ll be spending time there and building their lives around that school. While your opinion as a parent is important, so is their’s. The “Typical Student”

While there’s nothing wrong with a school who highlights specific stu- dents who’ve gone to ac-complish extraordinary achievements, not every student will be as accom- plished. Find out what their “typical student” is like in terms of test scores, extracurriculars, and lead- ership roles. Evaluate the student body as a whole rather than the few shining stars.

Talk to the community

Don’t underestimate the power of the Beijing community. Teachers, parents, and current students are your greatest resources when you want to find out the inside scoop on a school.

Ask questions

Don’t be afraid to put the school admissions staff on the spot. That’s what they’re there for. Ask the questions that really concern you. What meas- ures are the schools taking to ensure that their student’s mental health is treated as importantly as their academic achievements? What’s their policy on bullying?
