THE RETURN OF THE WILDCAT: For the first time since the 2015 season, the Yotes broke away from their typical zone-option attack – unveiling a modern Wildcat formation. Three seasons ago, the Wildcat formation led to 16 touchdowns for reserve quarterbacks J.J. Hyde and A.J. Martin – but Saturday, it was hybrid back Dominic Garzoli taking the shotgun snap – scoring on a two-yard carry. The sophomore carried eight times for 18 yards on the ground, while making five receptions for 76 yards – including a 39-yard reception to set up the Yotes first score, and scoring from 28-yards out on a screen pass.

FRESHMAN HANDLES THE PRESSURE: The Yotes turned to quarterback Nathaniel Holcomb in a key situation on Saturday night after a roughing the passer penalty knocked starter Darius-James Peterson from the game. The redshirt freshman showed nerves of steel, completing an 8-yard pass on first down and followed with a 28-yard screen pass for a touchdown pull C of I even in the third quarter. Holcomb re-entered the game late in the fourth quarter and went 5-of-8 on the Yotes final drive – leading the team inside the EOU 40-yard-line before the squad had to turn the ball over on downs. In all, Holcomb finished 7-of-10 for 81 yards on the night, including two third-down conversions.

RUN GAME HELD IN CHECK: For the first time in five seasons, the Coyotes struggled to run the football, as Eastern limited C of I to just 78 rushing yards. It was the first time an opponent held the Yotes under 100 yards on the ground since football returned in 2014 and the fewest rushing yards in a game since recording just 68 against Linfield on Oct. 15, 1977. Nick Calzaretta led the team with 54 yards rushing, averaging 4.5 yards per carry.

MITCHELL SHOWS OFF STRONG LEG: Kicker Kyle Mitchell had a quality night in La Grande, earning touchbacks on two of his four kickoffs, while driving the ball 67-yards and 72-yards on his other two boots. The junior was perfect on three extra point attempts, pushing his career scoring mark to 97 points – the most by a kicker in program history.

NO FUMBLES: C of I started the season off on a solid note – as the Yotes did not have a fumble during the game at EOU. Last season, the squad played a clean game from a fumble standpoint just once, in a road loss at Northern Colorado.

RECORD BOOK: Six Coyotes are currently in the Top-25 of the C of I career record book – led by Darius-James Peterson, who is No. 2 all-time in total offense (4,488), touchdowns (29) and rushing touchdowns (29); No. 3 in points scored (174); No. 5 in pass completions (184), pass attempts (347) and passing yards (2,621); No. 6 in rushing yards (1,867) and No. 8 in rushing attempts (346). Kyle Mitchell holds the school record for extra points made (70) and ranks No. 2 in field goals made (9) and points scored (97); Wes Fitzpatrick is No. 14 in receiving yards (579) and No. 19 in both receptions (39) and touchdown catches (3); Keegan Crafton is No. 14 in touchdown receptions (4), No. 23 in receiving yards (471) and No. 25 in receptions (30); Nik Lyons is No. 10 in interceptions (5); with Nick Calzaretta No. 14 in touchdown runs (14) and No. 21 in total touchdowns.

RECAP – EASTERN OREGON 24, COLLEGE OF IDAHO 21: A late fourth quarter rally came up short, as the College of Idaho dropped their 2018 season opener at Eastern Oregon, 24-21, before 1,150 fans at Community Stadium. The Mountaineers (1-0, 1-0) limited the C of I running game to just 78 total yards, but had to withstand a charge inside the final seven minutes to secure the victory. EOU quarterback Kai Quinn broke two tackles on a 3-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to give the hosts a 24-14 lead, but the Mounties could not capitalize on consecutive C of I interceptions. Nik Lyons picked Quinn off to thwart one drive, while Levi Russo-Bell blocked a Nathan Harden punt that was returned by Isaiah Abdul for a touchdown with six minutes left. The Yotes (0-1, 0-1) forced a punt and started their final drive inside their own 10-yard-line – but back-up quarterback Nathaniel Holcomb converted a third down pass to Connor Gagain and added a 14- yard strike to Hunter Juarez and an 18-yard pass to Connor Richardson to reach EOU territory with 40-seconds left. However, a fourth down pass fell incomplete to end the comeback bid. The two teams traded touchdowns in a first half defensive struggle – as a Quinn 27-yard pass to Phillip Millhollen set up a Victor Dias 2-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 – only to watch the Yotes answer, as a Darius-James Peterson 39-yard pass to Dominic Garzoli led to a Garzoli 2-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. EOU regained the lead on the first possession of the second half, as Dias capped a 75-yard drive with a 22-yard touchdown run. C of I evened the score midway through the quarter, as a roughing the passer penalty on the Mounties prolonged the Coyote drive – with Holcomb connecting with Garzoli on a 28-yard touchdown strike. The 78 yards rushing by the Yotes was the fewest since football returned in 2014 with the 295 yards of total offense just the third time C of I has failed to rack up 300 or more yards as a team. Nick Calzaretta rushed 12 times for 54 yards and Garzoli added 18 yards on eight carries. Peterson rushed just eight times for eight yards and was sacked three times, finishing 12-of-25 for 136 yards through the air, including two interceptions. Holcomb was 7-of-10 for 81 yards off the bench, with Richardson catching seven passes for 76 yards and Garzoli logging five receptions for 76 yards. David Ford led the Coyote defense with nine tackles, with Lyons adding eight tackles and four pass breakups to go along with his interception. Daniel Garcia and Keagan McCoy added sacks.
