To create a mono-ethnic state of Turks, the Ottoman government, during the First World War. tried to eliminate the Armenians, the Assyrians, and the Pontian Greeks who lived southeast of the Black Sea. It's only in recent year that the latter two genocides have received the notice they deserve. One of the people who has worked to make sure the three genocides are not forgotten and that Turkey compensates its innocent victims is Toronto politician Jim Karygiannis. Until recently an MP representing a riding in northeast of Toronto, Mr. Karygiannis will represent the same area in the Toronto municipal elections this fall.-Editor

100th Anniversary of the Pontian Genocide It is with a deep sense of reverence that I commemorate, with members of the Pontian community, the 100th Anniversary of the Pontian Genocide. We pause to remember an atrocity perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire - the deaths of three hundred and fifty thousand Greeks between 1914 and 1922. We also remember the 1.25 million individuals who were deported.

During and in the aftermath of World War 1, the Pontian Greek population of the Ottoman Empire faced persecution, massacre, expulsion and death marches from the historic region of Pontus, the

I am the grandchild of Greek Asia Minor refugees. My grandparents were forced to flee to Greece. Members of the Greek community have felt the horror of this black chapter in the world's history throughout the decades. We pay homage to the victims and express solidarity with the survivors and their descendants. This is a day we solemnly acknowledge as we work toward a better future for all mankind. I am calling on Parliament and the Government of Canada, who have the moral and ethical responsibility, to recognize this atrocity. I am working with members of the Canadian Greek community to press for the official recognition the Pontian Genocide. Over the years, several of my fellow Parliamentarians and I pressed Parliament to recognize the Armenian Genocide. On April 21, 2004, the Parliament of Canada voted to recognize the Armenian Genocide. On April 19, 2006, the Prime Minister affirmed that the Government of Canada officially recognized the Armenian Genocide. 100η Επέτειος της Γενοκτονίας των Ποντίων Δήλωση του Εντ. Δημήτριου Καρύγιαννη, Είναι με μια βαθιά αίσθηση σεβασμού και ευλάβειας τιμώ, με τα μέλη της Ποντιακής Κοινότητας, την 100η επέτειο της Γενοκτονίας των Ποντίων. Κάνουμε παύση για να θυμηθούμε μια φρικαλεότητα που διαπράχθηκαν από την Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία - οι θάνατοι πάνω από τριακοσίων πενήντα χιλιάδων Έλληνων, μεταξύ το 1914 και 1922. Αποτάσουμε φόρο τιμής στα θύματα και εκφράζουμε την αλληλεγγύη με τους επιζώντες και τους απογόνους τους. Αυτή είναι μια ημέρα που αναγνωρίζουμε επισήμως εργάζοντας προς ένα καλύτερο μέλλον για όλη την ανθρωπότητα. Με τα χρόνια, μαζί με αρκετούς από τους συναδέλφους μου βουλευτές πιέσαμε το Κοινοβούλιο να αναγνωρίσει τη Γενοκτονία των Αρμενίων. Στις 21 Απριλίου 2004, το Κοινοβούλιο του Καναδά ψήφισε να αναγνωρίσει τη Γενοκτονία των Αρμενίων. Στις 19 Απρίλη 2006, ο Πρωθυπουργός επιβεβαίωσε ότι η κυβέρνηση του Καναδά αναγνωρίζει επίσημα τη Γενοκτονία των Αρμενίων. Regards, Hon.
