Conducted research on smallholder agriculture and soil conservation jointly with Chris Udry of Northwestern University. Worked with Dr. Ernest Aryeetey on papers on social policy in Ghana. Assisted Professor Ethan Ligon in work on modeling altruism, consumption smoothing in developing countries and other research. Assisted in the teaching of an upper level development economics class. Consultant, The World Bank. Authored a study reviewing Bank lending in support of poverty alleviation to 16 countries for the Education and Social Policy Department. Contributed to work on the theory of targeted poverty alleviation programs, evaluation of poverty programs, and designed a study on the design of social safety nets in post-war economies. (February 1994 to August 1994).

Research Assistant, Harvard Institute for International Development. Assisted Institute Fellow Michael Roemer in work on a comparison between Asia 1965 and Africa today; served as a rapporteur for a conference on this book; also worked on estimating export supply elasticities in response to a devaluation for Institute Associate Jeffery Lewis. (October 1992 to January 1994).

Performed background research for Ambassador on a variety of topics including environmental issues, the UN and health, and other issues; wrote an extensive background brief for the economic section of the Mission on Latin American Debt, wrote reports for other officers on African and Latin American structural adjustment, capital flight and Namibia, drafted answers to correspondence of Ambassador and other officers, and tracked voting patterns for the Security Council elections.
