JOSEPH PRAYERS AT THE TIME OF DEATH BLESSINGS INTRODUCTION LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY The disciples knew Our Lord Jesus Christ very well in this detail: that he prayed often in their midst or alone. Moved by Our Lord’s dedication to prayer, they asked him once: “Lord, teach us to pray.” In answer, Our Lord gave them the model of all prayer: “When you pray, say: Our Father who art in heaven...” Buoyed by this confidence, we pray. We begin with the prayers we learned in childhood. They are very much a part of Christian tradition. Through our vocal prayers, we learn the life of Jesus Christ and we gain his confidence in talking to our Father God. Then our conversations with God become sincere and true, face to face, heart to heart. This is the way Saint Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer taught and lived throughout his life, a life of prayer. “Let us begin to do the same with God; we can be quite sure he listens to us and answers us. Let us pay attention to him and open up our soul in humble conversation, telling him in confidence everything that is in our heart: our joys, sorrows, hopes, annoyances, successes, failures, even the most trivial happenings in our day. We will discover that our heavenly father is interested in everything about us.” “The year 2000 marks a kind of challenge. We must look at the immensity of good that has sprung from the mystery of the Incarnation of the Word and, at the same time, not lose sight of the mystery of sin, which is continually expanding. Saint Paul writes that ‘where sin increased’ (‘ubi abundavit peccatum’, ‘grace overflows all the more’ (‘superabundavit gratia’; cf. Rom 5:20). This profound truth presents a perennial challenge for prayer. It shows how necessary prayer is for the world and for the Church, because in the end it constitutes the easiest way of making God and His redeeming love present in the world. God entrusted to men their own salvation; He entrusted to them the Church and, in the Church, the redeeming work of Christ. God entrusted this to all, both to individuals and to humanity as a whole. He entrusted all to one and one to all. The prayer of the Church, and especially the prayer of the Pope, must constantly reflect this awareness.” Through vocal prayers, we begin this conversation with God. “Prayer is a search for God, but it is also a revelation of God. Through prayer God reveals Himself as Creator and Father, as Redeemer and Savior, as the Spirit who ‘scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God’ (1 Cor 2:10) and above all ‘the secrets of human hearts’ (cf. Ps 43[44]:22). Through prayer God reveals Himself above all as Mercy—that is, Love that goes out to those who are suffering, Love that sustains, uplifts, and invites us to trust. The victory of good in the world is united organically with this truth. A person who prays professes such a truth and in a certain sense makes God, who is merciful Love, present in the world.” Hence, this Handbook is a compilation of the prayers that will help us talk to God in a confident and intimate way. Most of these prayers are traditional and are thus grounded in the piety of the Communion of Saints. Some are fruit of the meditations of Saint Josemaría Escrivá from his book, The Way of the Cross, and from his various homilies that deal with devotion to St. Joseph and to Mary, the Mother of God. We entrust this Treasury of Prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary. May she, who needed only to embrace her Son to make her prayer heard, teach us to pray as she prays—with the utmost confidence not because of our own worth, merit or devotion, but solely because of the Love and Mercy of Our Lord Jesus Christ. 1. HOW TO BE A TRUE CATHOLIC UNIVERSAL CALL TO HOLINESS “All Christians in any state or walk of life are called to the fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity.”1 “Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”2 God wants us to be holy. Each Christian must try to sanctify himself in his place within the Church of Christ. In particular, the laity “by their very vocation, seek the Kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and by ordering them according to the plan of God. They live in the world, that is, in each and in all of the secular professions and occupations.”3 “Hence the laity, dedicated as they are to Christ and anointed by the Holy Spirit, are marvelously called and prepared so that even richer fruits of the Spirit may be produced in them. For all their works, prayers, and apostolic undertakings, family and married life, daily work, relaxation of mind and body, if they are accomplished in the Spirit—indeed even the hardships of life if patiently born—all these become spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. In the celebration of the Eucharist these may most fittingly be offered to the Father along with the body of the Lord. And so, worshiping everywhere by their holy actions, the laity consecrate the world itself to God, everywhere offering worship by the holiness of their lives.”4 “[Lay Christians] live in the ordinary circumstances of family and social life, from which the very web of their existence is woven. They are called there by God that by exercising their proper function and led by the spirit of the Gospel, they may work for the sanctification of the world from within, as a leaven.”5 This universal call to holiness “pertains to them in a special way so to illuminate and order all temporal things with which they are so closely associated that these may be effected and grow according to Christ and may be to the glory of the Creator and Redeemer.”6 “Let us listen to Our Lord: ‘He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is dishonest in a very little thing is dishonest also in much.’ It is as if he were saying to us: ‘Fight continuously in the apparently unimportant things which are to my mind important; fulfill your duty punctually; smile at whoever needs cheering up even though there is sorrow in your soul; devote the necessary time to prayer, without haggling; go to the help of anyone who looks for you; practice justice and go beyond it with the grace of charity.’”7 In order to sanctify ourselves in the ordinary circumstances of our life, we need to grow in our spiritual life, especially through prayer, self-denial and work. Life of Prayer “We learn to pray at certain moments by hearing the Word of the Lord and sharing in his Paschal mystery, but his Spirit is offered us at all times, in the events of each day, to make prayer spring up from us.”8 “Prayer in the events of each day and each moment is one of the secrets of the kingdom revealed to ‘little children’, to the servants of Christ, to the poor of the Beatitudes. It is right and good to pray so that the coming of the kingdom of justice and peace may influence the march of history, but it is just as important to bring the help of prayer into humble, everyday situations; all forms of prayer can be the leaven to which the Lord compares the kingdom.”9 “But do not imagine that prayer is an action to be carried out and then forgotten. The just man ‘delights in the law of the Lord, and meditates on his law day and night. Through the night, I meditate on you’ and ‘my prayer comes to you like incense in the evening.’ Our whole day can be a time of prayer—from night to morning and from morning to night.”10 Life of Self-Denial “The way of perfection passes by way of the Cross. There is no holiness without renunciation and spiritual battle. Spiritual progress entails the ascesis and mortification that gradually lead to living in the peace and joy of the Beatitudes.”11 “Without mortification there is no happiness on earth.”12 Life of Work “Human work proceeds directly from persons created in the image of God and called to prolong the work of creation by subduing the earth, both with and for one another. Hence work is a duty: ’If any one will not work, let him not eat.’ Work honors the Creator’s gifts and the talents received from him. It can also be redemptive. By enduring the hardship of work in union with Jesus, the carpenter of Nazareth and the one crucified on Calvary, man collaborates in a certain fashion with the Son of God in his redemptive work.

Office Hours: TBA at St. Albert’s Priory Course Description This course is a 1.5 unit graded liturgical practicum open to Dominican friar students, normally after residency year, best in the year of deaconal or priestly ordination. The goal is to acquire the ability to celebrate Low Mass and Missa Cantata according to the traditional Dominican Rite in Latin. The outcome will be a correct and fluid "dry Mass" celebration of the Dominican Rite Low Mass and of the Missa Cantata. These two exercises will in equal parts provide the two graded "exams" of the course. The format will be a practicum in which students perform the rite under the direction of the instructor. Admission to the Class Dominican friars who would like to be admitted to the class need to arrange an interview with the instructor. At the interview they will be asked to recite from memory the texts found on the next page. This memorization is not-negotiable and will serve to prove that the student is ready to undertake the heavy memorization element of the class. SECULARISM AS A FALSIFICATION OF HOPE The interventions of the Pontifical magisterium at the beginning of the third millennium are characterized, among other things, by an insistent and ever more explicit appeal to Christian hope. In the Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in Europa the very structure of the document is built on the consideration of the present and the future of Europe from the perspective of that theological virtue. One of the passages that the Post-Synodal Exhortation dedicates to the diagnosis of the cultural and sociological situation of the old continent—which is indeed perfectly transferable to other geographic and human areas—describes with intense flourishes some of the symptoms of a marked “dimming of hope”: “by a kind of practical agnosticism and religious indifference whereby many Europeans give the impression of living without spiritual roots—somewhat like heirs who have squandered a patrimony entrusted to them by history. Many people are no longer able to integrate the Gospel message into their daily experience; living one's faith in Jesus becomes increasingly difficult in a social and cultural setting in which that faith is constantly challenged and threatened. In many social settings it is easier to identify oneself as an agnostic than as a believer.

The dissertation focuses on two central texts that are indicative of two distinct historical moments of the Protestant Reformation in England. Thomas More's Utopia was first published in Latin at Louvain in 1516, roughly one year before the publication of Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses signaled the commencement of the Reformation on the Continent and roughly a decade before the Henrician Reformation in England. As a humanist text, Utopia contains themes pertinent to internal Church reform, while simultaneously warning polemicists and ecclesiastics to leave off their paltry squabbles over non-essential religious matters, lest the unity of the Church catholic be imperiled. More's engagement with the Holy Land is influenced by contemporary researches into the languages of that region, most notably the search for the original and perfect language spoken before the episode at Babel. As the confusion of tongues at Babel functions etiologically to account for the origin of all ideological conflict, it was thought that the rediscovery of the prima lingua might resolve all conflict.

To become a member of this Archconfraternity it suffices to have one’s name inscribed on the register of the members. Nevertheless, as the end of this pious association is to serve and honour the Blessed Virgin, invoked under the title of Mother of Perpetual Succour, the members should earnestly endeavour to ensure the maternal protection of Mary by having perpetual recourse to Her. What use, indeed, would it be to have the honour of being numbered with the privileged children of Mary, unless at the same time we honour Her by a more assiduous and more fervent devotion? The members are therefore strongly recommended, 1. To wear a medal of Our Mother of Perpetual Succour and St Alphonsus. 2. To place in their houses a Picture of Our Mother of Perpetual Succour. They will not fail to honour Her as the Patron and Protectress of their families, and they will say their usual prayers before this Picture or one of St Alphonsus. 3. There is general consensus among scholars that The Practice of Mental Prayer is Bellintani’s ascetical masterpiece. What is more, it is also one of those works similar to The Contempt of the World by Innocent III, The Dialogue of Divine Providence by Catherine of Siena, The Treatise on Purgatory by Saint Catherine of Genoa, The Spiritual Combat by Scupoli that seems to epitomise a era of spiritual writings. In fact while it is regarded as one of the most ripe fruits of the Capuchin Italian sixteenth century and, perhaps, the most mature product of a particular kind of spirituality, on a broader scale it represents the pre-eminently apostolic aspect of the new Franciscan reform which seems to capture and fully exemplify its two outstanding characteristics: contemplative solitude and preaching the Gospel. Bellintani’s work, which is presented as a method and guide for mental prayer was generally accepted by popular piety as one of the most widely read and enjoyed ascetical works by the Christian community. This is substantiated by the number of editions which continued to be published into the seventeenth century and by translations into French, Latin and Spanish which in all numbered about fifty. What is more it was recommended by Saint Charles Borromeo, prescribed for Confraternities of Penance by the Archbishop of Avignon, Francesco M. Taugi, praised by the Spirituals of the day, used by prayer groups during the Forty Hours and flicked through by everyone.

    CONFIRMATION December 1, 2020 Dear Parents and Students, You have elected to register your son/daughter for the St. Agnes Christian Formation program this year. When registering your son/daughter it is stated that our Confirmation program is a two-year program. This program challenges him or her to grow in his or her understanding of the Catholic faith and his or her personal relationship with God. There are several points to make you aware of in preparation for Confirmation (which starts in 8th grade with the student receiving the Sacrament with the completion of 9th grade studies) (due to pandemic this school year completion of 10th grade)). Successful completion of the curriculum includes once a month catechesis, service to others, and spending time with God in prayer. The greatest form of prayer is the celebration of the Mass. As Catholics, we are encouraged to attend weekly Mass in order to recognize God’s love more fully in the Word and Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. While the pandemic poses a particular challenge at this time, students and their families are highly encouraged to either attend weekly Mass in person (Precautions are in place to ensure everyone’s safety) or to seek out an online Mass to encourage growth in love for Christ in preparation for Confirmation. Below is a list of other expectations. Remember, these “assignments” are designed to support our students in their desire to know, love, and serve our wonderful God while helping to prepare them for the reception of the Sacrament. This process for being Confirmed in the Spirit is a commitment from the parish, support from parents, and a commitment from the student that wishes to be Confirmed.

    Serving the Hierarchical Liturgy: A FEW POINTS ABOUT HIERARCHICAL SERVICES: What Priests Do & Clarification of a Few Other Matters BACKGROUND: There exist several extensive guides in Russian[1], and at least one extensive guide in English[2], to the rituals accompanying the hierarchical celebration of the Divine Liturgy and other services. These all substantially agree; however, they cover almost everything and everybody and are chiefly of value to the "novice" hierarch. Moreover, these instructions usually assume a full complement of clergy - several Deacons; Subdeacons, and miscellaneous church servitors, while in most parishes in the U.S. and in the Diocese of the West there may be no Deacon at all, and the few church servitors present, some specially "conscripted" for a Hierarch's visit, may be completely inexperienced in serving at all. I remember the difficulty I had, as a novice Deacon, preparing for my first hierarchical Services, both when the Hierarch was accompanied by an experienced Deacon and when "everything" depended on me. I used Father Rostislav Gan's well known guide, mostly, but the only way I could make sense of it was to go through and use different color underliners to single out the various Deacons' roles: Green for the 1st Deacon, Blue for the 2nd, Red for the 3rd, and Yellow for the 4th and 5th. Then I had to combine all these and keep some for myself and apportion others to Subdeacons and Servitors. These instructions all, for example, direct the junior Deacons t o do the vesting of the hierarch - obviously Subdeacons, at best, and raw "altar boys" often, carry out this complicated responsibility.
