FINDING A HOME AWAY FROM HOME As the only student from Kyrgyzstan, I was not only nervous about starting university but also concerned that I would get lonely so far away from home. On the first day, I realised that I had made the right decision as people were so welcoming and supportive. I have gained so much out of my experience at HKU. My favourite area of study has been a core course on Africa which completely transformed my perception of the continent. I’ve also met people from all around the world, primarily through my residence at Shun Hing College where I try and attend as many of the exciting weekly events as possible. Most notably, the annual Indian and Chinese Daiana Mazaripova New Year celebrations inspired the students from Central Asia to also celebrate our culture at the college. It felt wonderful to share parts of ourselves and dispel Kyrgyzstan Bachelor of stereotypes about our culture. It is these moments of true camaraderie that make and Finance me feel that I have found a home away from home.

WORKING WITH REFUGEES IN SLOVAKIA The University’s international programmes gave me opportunities beyond my wildest dreams. Over the past summer, I participated in a social innovation internship at the Human Rights League (Liga za ľudské práva) in Bratislava, an organisation established by lawyers and attorneys to provide legal assistance to refugees in Slovakia. During my two months in Bratislava, I not only observed and participated in political demonstrations but I also had the chance to communicate and make friends with the country’s refugees in the process. Over weekends, I was able to take advantage of my location and travel all around Central Europe. The invaluable experience broadened my horizons and helped me to develop a more informed and Irene Lee compassionate perspective on the refugee situation in Hong Kong and South Korea. My time in Slovakia promoted my understanding of the South Korea powerful yet challenging role of non-profit and civil society organisations Bachelor of Social Sciences in influencing politics and inspiring change for those in need. & GAINING FINANCE EXPOSURE WORLDWIDE Studying at HKU meant I could remain in Asia while gaining international experience. I chose to complete my faculty exchange programme at NYU Stern, one of the top finance schools globally located in my favourite city. During my time in New York, I saw multiple Broadway shows, travelled around the East Coast, and sampled this culinary melting pot’s many incredible restaurants. Fun aside, I also gained a deeper understanding of the city’s finance industry by joining several networking events and business clubs. Back in Hong Kong, I signed up for the International team. I was fortunate enough to represent HKU in Canada, Singapore, and Norway, meeting like-minded students from all around the world while probing cases from companies in various industries to expand my knowledge. I went Atthaseda Anthony Lim on to secure internship positions at Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley in Hong Kong where I was privileged to experience first-hand Indonesia how global events affect our day-to-day workflow. Bachelor of Business Administration

MASTERING CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS As a first-year student I had a lot to learn about HKU’s exciting portfolio of overseas learning experiences. The University helped me to participate in what I can only describe as one of the most incredible programmes imaginable. The month-long Common Purpose Leadership Development Programme in the Philippines shaped me in so many different ways. We learned indispensable leadership development and project management skills and put our knowledge to the test in short-term internships, gaining hands-on experience at non-profit organisations. Working and living as part of a diverse team, based in an entirely different country with a culture of its own, not only brought out the best in us but also gave each team Vinella Mendonca member ample opportunity to improve his or her cultural intelligence. My most memorable experience, the programme allowed me to explore India Bachelor of areas of interest outside of my engineering major while adding valuable Engineering new skills and forging lasting friendships.
