Travelogue 5 – Apollonia to Berat We Stopped Along the Road After
Travelogue 5 – Apollonia to Berat We stopped along the road after leaving Gjirokastër for a post-breakfast treat at a small bakery across from this long-abandoned factory. The dry semi-sweet cookies were more interesting than good, but the factory itself was worth the stop. Its sign, rarely seen today but common during the country’s Communist past, declared the glory of Marxism and Leninism. The sign on this abandoned building touted Marxism and Leninism. Our first destination was the ruins of Apollonia, an ancient city founded in 588 BC by Greek colonists. It was the most important of the several classical towns known as Apollonia and flourished in the Roman period only to decline in the 3rd century AD when its harbor started silting up as a result of an earthquake. The Monument of Agonothetes at Apollonia is impressive. While this site is more impressive to scholars than casual tourists, it also has an interesting more modern history dating from the 18th century when it was "rediscovered" and eventually investigated by archaeologists led by Frenchman Leon Rey in the 1920’s. There have been subsequent excavations, but abundant pottery shards and other ancient debris are ubiquitous. Ancient pottery shards littered old digs around the site. After a tour of the ruins, we visited the 13th-century Monastery of Apollonia and its associated Archaeological Museum, where Enea provided expert exhibit-by-exhibit commentary. The 13th-century Church of Saint Mary stands at the heart of the monastery. This beautiful iconographic panel was in the monastery. Is this a well-endowed fertility symbol? Upon leaving the museum we returned to the Ardenica restaurant, which we visited earlier in the trip, for a lunch of grilled vegetables and frog legs. -

ANDREA LLUKANI KRISHTËRIMI NË SHQIPËRI (Sipas burimeve arkivore) Botimet “Trifon Xhagjika” Tiranë, 2014 1 Këtë libër ia kushtoj Astit, birit tim të parëlindur. Redaktor: prof. em. dr. Pavli Haxhillazi Recensues: dr. -

Fan S. Noli's Liturgical Translations Into Albanian and English
1 FAN S. NOLI’S LITURGICAL TRANSLATIONS INTO ALBANIAN AND ENGLISH By Rev. Fr. Foti Tsitsi 2 1. INTRODUCTION Fan Stylian Noli (1882-1965) published around fifty books. Half of his publications are translations of liturgical texts from Greek into Albanian and English, including musical settings in both languages, a translation of the New Testament into English for liturgical use, and a complete translation of the New Testament and the Psalms into English. In addition, Noli arranged and translated into Albanian and English two catechism books. All of this liturgical translation work of Metropolitan Archbishop Theofan Noli will be the subject of this paper, especially the ideological nuances that these translations contain. After the 1940s, hundreds of articles and books were published about Noli, and many authors are still investigating different aspects of his life and work: his language, poetry, translations of world literature, historical works, politics, etc. Noli’s Albanian translations of liturgical texts, used today in Albania and in the United States, are the only ones that exist. Even the recent liturgical publications of the Orthodox Church in Albania are mere adaptations of Noli’s original translations. His English publications of the Liturgy and the New Testament are still used by most of the Albanian Orthodox Churches in the United States and in some other parishes in different jurisdictions. While there is a large bibliography regarding Noli’s life and secular works, it is nearly impossible to find even one work pertaining to his religious publications in either Albanian or English. Furthermore, there is no work about Noli as a Metropolitan and leader of the Church in Albania and in the United States. -

Of Women, Faith, and Nation: American Protestantism and the Kyrias School For Girls, Albania by Nevila Pahumi A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in the University of Michigan 2016 Doctoral Committee: Professor Pamela Ballinger, Co-Chair Professor John V.A. Fine, Co-Chair Professor Fatma Müge Göçek Professor Mary Kelley Professor Rudi Lindner Barbara Reeves-Ellington, University of Oxford © Nevila Pahumi 2016 For my family ii Acknowledgements This project has come to life thanks to the support of people on both sides of the Atlantic. It is now the time and my great pleasure to acknowledge each of them and their efforts here. My long-time advisor John Fine set me on this path. John’s recovery, ten years ago, was instrumental in directing my plans for doctoral study. My parents, like many well-intended first generation immigrants before and after them, wanted me to become a different kind of doctor. Indeed, I made a now-broken promise to my father that I would follow in my mother’s footsteps, and study medicine. But then, I was his daughter, and like him, I followed my own dream. When made, the choice was not easy. But I will always be grateful to John for the years of unmatched guidance and support. In graduate school, I had the great fortune to study with outstanding teacher-scholars. It is my committee members whom I thank first and foremost: Pamela Ballinger, John Fine, Rudi Lindner, Müge Göcek, Mary Kelley, and Barbara Reeves-Ellington. -
The Beginnings of Albanian Fine Art in the Republic of North Macedonia
UDC: Review article THE BEGINNINGS OF ALBANIAN FINE ART IN THE REPUBLIC OF NORTH MACEDONIA Mixhait Pollozhani Departament of Fine Arts, Faculty of Arts Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] Abstract Albanian fine art in North Macedonia, which begins at the end of the 50s of the twentieth century, undoubtedly depended on the position of Albanians in the country, and not only appears with a great delay, initially it was also manifested with a limited quantitative and stylistic opus compared to the national artistic scene. It should be noted that currently there are used two versions of labeling related to the fine art work of Albanian Macedonian researchers. This entire issue is related to the question whether we can talk about Albanian national art in the Republic of North Macedonia. At first glance, it seems that there is no difference between these two formulations, yet essentially, they differ from each other. However, it is clear that this dilemma is unnecessary since now all the conditions fulfilled. Keywords: Albanian fine art, North Macedonia, founders ___________________________________________________________________________ Political, social and cultural circumstances in the country It should be reminded that the Albanian people during their history have experienced (a)symmetrical fate, be it within their own being or opposite other peoples. The appearance and development of fine art in the Republic of North Macedonia should also be viewedin the context of these circumstances. But Albanian art should not be viewed separately from the general social, political and cultural national developments. Every so often, the Albanians have lived similar fates even with other nations of the Balkan, particularly with the neighboring Slavic nations with whom co (habited) (and a part of Albanians continue to live together even today) for more than a century within the frames of the same Yugoslav state communities, by experiencing and surviving different regimes and political systems. -

DOI: https://doi.org/10.24197/her.22.2020.383-413 Abstract: This paper outlines the importance of translation activity for the Albanian culture beginning from the earliest period, as a driving force and forerunner of the Albanian National Awakening and identity, to the latest developments related to the quantity of translations, as well as their quality, peacebuilding in Kosovo and the use of translation for subversive propaganda. Translation, along with religion and masterpieces of world literature, brought different alphabetic scripts, many foreign words and, despite the adversarial approach by the Church and ruling authorities, contributed to the codification efforts, language purification and the coining of new words. Common expressions and folklore were collected and found their way into translated texts, now serving as grounds to call for retranslation. Keywords: Translation, national awareness, folklore, standardisation, tolerance. -
Naim Frashëri
Naim Frashëri Founder and professor of Albanian literature for children Rudina Alimerko, MSc (PhD Candidate) Department of Education University “Ismail Qemali” Vlorë, Albania Abstract The tradition that Naim created is alive and inspirational even among the lives of the present society. More than a writer, Naim is the greatest poet of our National Renaissance, is a patriot, think-tank and famous activist of education and Albanian culture. His most special merit in this literary creativity stands in the fact that he raised the literature for children at a higher artistic level, strongly affecting the other Renaissance figures. Which are the virtues that Naim Frashëri wants to develop among the children? As a writer and professor, Naim aimed to activate through his creativities the intellectual and educational thought and the spiritual moral emancipation of the children. In his literary creativity, Naim Frashëri appears not only as a famous writer and poet, but as a great professor at the same time, publishing literary and pedagogical works. The book Reader for boys with short stories distinguished him as a talented prose writer for children, whereas the poetic art in the collection Poetry for the first grades established him as the founder of the poetry for children, where Naim appears as an educator and serves as a propagandist of the noble virtues of love for work, of honour, faith, justice, truth, humanism, will for learning and knowledge, love for one’s country.
