They opened up a new world where autobiography, reportage and narrative fiction found comics form, and in doing so, generat- ed a whole new marketplace. Comics grew and stretched and found a new way to talk to readers who’d never read a comic before. It wasn’t just the US either. Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and more found new homegrown comics movements emerging, new publishers putting ink to paper. Yet people would ask “Where are the British comics?” The country which arguably invented the form was missing in action, its comics talent– barring odd flashes of brilliance:2000AD, Viz, Deadline, Slab-O-Concrete–called overseas to re-write the future of the US comics industry. Faced with nothing but kids’ comics, creators packed their virtual bags and turned their heads westward as so many had before them. Now, at long last, creators’ eyes are looking homewards again. | 03 THERE’S a clamour building, a new audience having their blue touchpaper lit, eyes and minds being opened up to just what words and pictures can do together. New publishers are springing up. Artists are challenging themselves to produce fun, inventive, meaningful comics, to break the mould and produce new British comics up there with the very best. I’m proud to have Blank Slate Books placed at the centre of that revolution, giving chances to more new UK comics artists than anyone else. There are amazing new comics here, as well as collections of some half-forgotten gems, and for just a touch of variety a few translated award-winners thrown in. We hope this catalogue makes you want to explore UK comics’ new dawn. Every book you buy moves another cartoonist nearer to the ‘roll presses’ order, and there are so many we want to print. In the three years that Blank Slate’s been around we’ve been thrilled by the support you’ve given, and hope that you agree this catalogue represents a return on your investment and the scaffolding for building great, new, UK comics. The next UK comics masterpiece is just around the corner. Listen, I hear it coming.
