Corresponding Author: Prashant Ashokrao Gawande Abstract The genus Dioscorea is commonly known as yam, and the family Dioscoreaceae popularly called the yam family. Seven species, two variety of Dioscorea were investigated for establishment of phylogenetic relationships based on a morphological analysis by using NTSYSPC. Morphological dendrogram reveals two clusters in which species under section Enantiophyllum distributed distantly in the dendrogram. However, section Botryosicyos and Lasiophyton exhibit morphological affinity. The section Opsophyton maintains separate entity and was found to be outgrouped. Key words: Dioscorea, Distribution, Morphology, Phylogenetic analysis. Introduction The state of Maharashtra has 307,713 km2 total geographic area, of which 50,632 km2 (16.45%) is covered by forest (FSI, 2013). In order to conserve biodiversified flora and fauna the government of India has established 29 tiger reserves covering an area of 58,620 km2; 508 wild life sanctuaries covering 1,18,400.76 km2 area and 97 national parks extended over 38,223.89 km2 area.

  • Water Levels Dip in Reservoirs, Alarm Bells Ring
Sep 04 2015 : The Economic Times (Delhi) Water Levels Dip in Reservoirs, Alarm Bells Ring Across States Madhvi Sally New Delhi: Falling water levels in 91 major reservoirs to hit availability for irrigation & drinking The country is heading for a shortage of water for irrigation and drinking as water level in 91 major reservoirs has dipped 16% below normal, and is expected to deplete further with the monsoon on the verge of withdrawal. The Central Water Commission, which monitors reservoirs, plans to issue advisories to states about the situation after the weather office formally announces the date when the monsoon withdraws. Reservoirs usually fill up during the monsoon season, which provides about 75% of the country's rainfall, and supply water for irrigation and drinking for the rest of the year. Officials say the situation is particularly disturbing in western and southern regions although central Indian reservoirs have adequate water. The situation in the north is also better due to heavy downpours in the Himalayan states. AB Pandya, chairman of the Cen tral Water Commission, said the situation is being monitored. “We are waiting for the India Meteorological Department to give the monsoon withdrawal dates. After that we will be in a better situation to come with an advisory,“ he said. The water situation is much worse than last year, when the monsoon began with a severe dry spell of six weeks, but rainfall improved significantly towards the end of the season and filled up reservoirs to optimal levels. This year, the monsoon began strongly but has tapered off in August, leaving reservoirs depleted.

Land use/land cover is a significant part in understanding the connections of the human being doings with the situation and thus it is necessary to be able to simulate changes. Land is used for the motivations such as crops, forests, mining, transport, housing, entertaining, manufacturing and cost-effective. The unused lands are unproductive waste and i.e. barren and fallow land. To record the land use/land cover information from surveying and data collection is not always possible in view of time and cost involved in data collection. In view of this the objective of present paper is to mapping the general land use/land cover pattern of Akole Tahsil. For completion of objective secondary data were obtained from the images LISS 3 and LANDSAT 8 remote sensing satellite for the period 2011 and 2015 respectively.

Flat Jack Method for Measuring Design Parameters for Hydraulic Structures of the Koyna Hydro Electric Project in India Keshav Ral Dhawan, Chief Research Officer, Central Water & Power Research Station, Khadakwasla, Pune– 411 024; [email protected] ABSTRACT: The paper presents two different projects: The first involves a case with limited rock cover on a side of an excavated surge shaft located near a steep slope. The second involves the assessment of design parameters of an existing masonry dam for use as input in dynamic analysis. The induced stresses in the surge shaft of Koyna Hydro Electric Project (K.H.E.P.) stage-IV were measured with flat jack. These tests were first performed in a 4 m diameter pilot shaft and after the shaft was excavated to its full diameter of 22.70 m. The stresses increased from 3.96 MPa to 5.09 MPa, when the 4m- diameter surge shaft was expanded to its full diameter of 22.70 m, in the case where significant rock mass cover existed at EL 651.00 m. However stress reduction or no variation in the induced stress was measured in the portion of insufficient rock cover. In the second case, to determine the design parameters of Kolkewadi masonry dam of K.H.E.P stage-III, flat jack tests were conducted at the upstream side of Kolkewadi masonry dam in masonry of 1:4 and 1:3 and at downstream sloping side in masonry of 1:5. It is impractical and difficult to obtain mechanical properties of masonry in laboratory from the extracted core samples, due to intrinsic nonhomogeneity of the material.
