October 2020 From the HELLASTONChellaston ACTION Residents’ GROUP Association SUPPORTING RESIDENTS – OUR LOCAL AREA CO-ORDINATOR Marissa Jefford isIssue a newly 2 appointed ‘Local Area Coordinator’ for ChellastonJuly 2016 and Shelton Lock. She works for Derby City Council and has previously been working in the Arboretum area of Derby. In March, she was redeployed to Chellaston & Shelton Lock as a ‘ward coordinator’ to support local residents as part of the ‘Community Response Hub’ which was set up to provide an emergency response to those most in need throughout the lockdown. What is Local Area Coordination? Marissa says that is essentially about helping people to identify what a ‘good life’ looks like for them, and working with them to make positive changes. People want to make contact with others for a wide variety of reasons, perhaps because they feel isolated and want to make new connections or they want to become more involved in their communities. They may require help to navigate systems and processes with which they may be unfamiliar or they may lack confidence. Everyone’s needs are different and there is no “one size fits all” solution. Hence there is a need for the personal approach which is where Marissa comes in. These are some of the things that Marissa can help you with: • Making it easier for you to get the information, support and services you need • Help with problems you may have as well as helping you to find new things to do • Providing ideas and options that you may not have considered before using knowledge of area • Helping you to meet new people, connect with old friends and become more involved in your community Marissa will always take time to listen to anyone who contacts her so that she understands what could be best for them and how to make it happen. It would be great if our singers could prepare some carols/Christmas items to sing at these occasions. Barbara Clarke is available and preparing some items.     Derby Conservation Areas Highfield Cottages INTRODUCTION The Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 requires Local Planning Authorities to determine areas of special architectural or historic interest, ‘the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance’. These areas are called Conservation Areas. Derby is a city of considerable historic interest and architectural merit with a range of streets and buildings spanning many centuries. In an effort to conserve important elements of our built heritage, the City Council have designated fifteen such areas. The City Centre and Friar Gate Conservation Areas are at the heart of the city centre. Seven are based on aspects of Victorian Derby (Railway, Arboretum, Little Chester, Strutts Park and Hartington Street, Highfield Cottages, Leylands Estate, Nottingham Road) and the remaining five are focused on former village centres (Darley Abbey, Mickleover, Spondon, Allestree and Markeaton). This document outlines the history and mentions some of the exceptional buildings contained within one of these areas. There are legal requirements and constraints which apply to Conservation Areas which do not apply elsewhere and the City Council therefore must pay special attention to the ‘character’ and ‘appearance’ of these areas when exercising its planning powers. This is a positive process in which a continuing effort is being made to control the nature and scale of change. With the exception of certain buildings, no building in a Conservation Area can be demolished without consent from the Local Authority. This is enforced to maintain some of the more ordinary buildings that nevertheless contribute a great deal to the character of the area.
