Avinashilingam under the auspices of the Avinashilingam Education Trust in 1957 with 45 students. The growth of the Institution has been carefully nutured to its current heights by the world renowned educationist and nutritionist, former Chancellor of the University. Dr. Rajammal P. Devadas. It is now the largest Institution in the country for imparting Home Science Education at all levels. It was one of the eight colleges on which autonomy was conferred by the University of Madras in June 1978 and the first of the women‟s colleges to get this distinction. Autonomy gave the College scope for academic freedom for innovations in tehaching and research. The Government of India declared Sri Avinashilingam Home Science College for Women and Sri Avinashilingam Teacher‟s College for Women as a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act in June 1988. These Colleges have been renamed as Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women. Dr. T.S.K. Meenakshisundaram had assumed the Chancellor from 21.12.2010, from 23.11.2015, Dr. P. R. Krishnakumar assumed the Chancellorship. He is the follower of the Founder-President Dr. T.S. Avinashilingam Ayya Avargal. The university follows the educational ideals of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sri Saradamani Devi, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi and upholds a life of purity, discipline and service. A temple dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna commands the campus. Daily prayer is an integral part of campus life. All the students and staff are expected to participate in the common prayers. The University functions under seven faculties, namely, Home Science, Science, Humanities, Education, Business Administration, Engineering and Community Education and Entrepreneurship Development. Each faculty functions under the headship of a Dean. The pattern of education has been fully semesterised. The academic year is divided into two semesters, each semester having minimum of 90 teaching days. The semester pattern offers each student individual attention of the teacher and facilitates the students all- round development. It calls for active participation of the students in the learning process. Regular attendance is an important feature of the semester pattern. In all programmes, a student should have a minimum of 75 percent attendance for both theory and practicals to appear for the Comprehensive Semester Examinations. Examinations for the courses offered in a Semester are conducted in the same semester to make learning more effective and to reduce the burden on the students. 1 The integration of NSS with the curriculum is a unique distinction of Avinashilingam Deemed University from 1991. While the scheme has all along been voluntary, educationists have started thinking about the incorporation of it in the curriculum itself to give it an academic status, credibility and credit. Avinashilingam Deemed University which has a rich heritage in Community service and outreach activities had the urge and courage to pioneer in this noble venture and introduced NSS as a cross subject in the Undergraduate curriculum. The major and unique educational innovation in the University brought forth has been incorporated Community and Social Service (CSS) in the curriculum at the Postgraduate level with academic weightage and credibility. The major tasks of CSS are cooperatively determined to promote action achievable by the level of maturity of the group, permitted by the available resources and defined in terms of behaviour changes among students and the members of the community. National Cadet Corps came into existence in the university in the year 1968. Regularly parades are conducted in the campus. In addition the cadets attend various camps and conduct special activities every year. The University has well equipped library that caters to the research and teaching activities of institutions, a computer centre to provide additional support to the computer related activities of the University, an Instrumentation Maintenance Facility (IMF) which provides essential support of servicing and maintaining laboratory instruments and Electronic items utilized in various laboratories of this university, a health center, Sradalaya Canteen, Hostel for students and Saradalaya Press with modern computerized Offset Printing Press facilities. 2 2.
