MAN IN NATURE Pre-Christian Eastern Slavic Reflections on Nature Molly Kaushal What follows is a simple account of how, in earlier times, the Eastern Slavs, particularly the pre-Christian Russians, interacted with nature. Pre-Christian slavic religion was mainly based on nature worship. Fire, Earth and Water figured prominently in its beliefs and ritual practices. The forces of nature were personified, feared, and revered, and the Slavs developed a whole pantheon of gods and goddesses. However, the three main gods of their pantheon were linked together not in a hierarchical way, but in a mutually complementary way, where each was incomplete without the other. A whole cycle of rituals revolved around various forces of nature and their personified images. The arrival of Christianity as the official religion and the establishment of the Russian Orthodox Church culminated in the banning of many folk ritual practices which were pre-Christian in origin, and in the persecution of those who practised them. Yet, a complete annihilation of earlier beliefs and practices could never be accomplished. Pre- Christian beliefs and gods exerted such a strong influence upon the Russian mind that the only way to come to terms with them was through incorporating them in the mainstream of the Christian order. Water, Fire, and the Mother Earth Goddess were, and have remained, the most powerful images of Russian religious beliefs and practices, and folk memory has remained loyal to the personified and non- personified images of these elements. According to some scholars, Rusi, or Russians as we call them, have their origins in the word Roce. -
Mošćenički Pinel 2016 – a Review of the Artworks
Mošćenički Pinel 2016 – a review of the artworks The topic of this year's Mošćenički Pinel arts workshop, Mošćenice reality and fantasy, is closely related to Slavic mythology. Continuing the research and reflections on the influence of this mythology in the Liburnia area in the projects of the Katedra Čakavskog Sabora Association of Mošćenička Draga, the participants of this art colony have become explorers of real and imaginary landscapes which they have tried to convey in their artworks using different artistic visions and expressions. The mythological stories depict the world as a holy tree, usually an oak, whose branches and bark represent the living world of the heavens and mortals, the sky and the earth, while its roots symbolise the underworld and the world of the dead. The ruler of the world of the living is the god Perun, who is constantly challenged by his opponent Veles, the water god of the underworld. Apart from stealing cattle from Perun, Veles also kidnaps his son Jarilo and his wife. In return, Perun hurls lightning at Veles, who turns into various animals and hides behind trees, houses or people. In the end, in Veles's ritual death, rain falls from his body, after which the sun begins to shine again, establishing the balance between the earth and the underworld. In the past, people used these myths to explain daily weather conditions. Another myth served as an explanation for the change of the seasons: spring started when Perun's son Jarilo escaped from Veles, and his entering the holy community with his sister Morana marked the summer period. -

Yeltsin 51 Lenina, Ekaterinburg, 620083 Russia Received 28.07.2013, received in revised form 30.09.2013, accepted 05.11.2013 This article reveals the ambiguity of interpretation of Baba Yaga character by the representatives of different schools of mythology. Each of the researchers has his own version of the semantic peculiarities of this culture hero. Who is she? A pagan goddess, a priestess of pagan goddesses, a witch, a snake or a nature-deity? The aim of this research is to reveal the ambiguity of the archetypical features of this character and prove that the character of Baba Yaga as a culture hero of the archaic religious mythology has an influence on the contemporary religious mythology of mass media. Introduction. “Religious mythology” is examined by the author of the article (Ivanova, a new term, which is relevant to contemporary 2012, p.56). The subject of the research presented religious and cultural studies, philosophy in this article is topography or conceptual space of religion and other sciences focusing on of notional understanding of the fairytale pagan correlation between myth and religion. Despite long years of study, the most elementary questions remain unan- swered – as a result of the scarcity of material traces of the said communities and due to the changing nature of scholarly interest or the lack of enthusiasm for studying subjects beyond so-called tribal geography. The introduction presents the currently available data which may be used in the reconstruction of the natural en- vironment in the area in question, emphasizing the impact it may have had on the stability and structure of settlements. The following subchapter focuses on the forms of architec- ture and the often discussed issue of the possibly seasonal nature of the structures. A separate subsection discusses defensive structures which began to appear at the end of the period under analysis. It also takes note of the structural S³¬´Ó°Ï© MÓ;Ö¯ÏÓ®× dierences between the strongholds erected in south-eastern and in north-western regions of Polish territory, emphasiz- ing the ongoing discussion regarding the function of these structures, which indubitably went beyond strictly defensive purposes. -

As representações dos Vikings são primeiro desenvolvidas dentro do espectro da história e da identidade polonesa contemporâneas. Depois, através de um breve balanço historiográfico e arqueológico da situação geopolítica da Era Viking na Polônia. E finalmente, os Vikings são abordados através do imaginário geral, mais apresentado pelas coleções de museus e reconstruções históricas na Polônia. The Viking's representations are first developed under the scope of contemporary Polish history and identity. Then through a quick historiographical and archaeological overview of the geopolitical situation of Viking Age Poland. Finally, the Vikings are approached through the general imaginary, mostly presented by museum collections and historical reconstructions in Poland. Palestinian Reception of We, Polish Jews In memory of professor Chone Szmeruk At the beginning of the sixties, Allenby street – the main commercial thorough- fare of Tel Aviv – was a Polish street. There, one could find all the official institutions like the embassy of the People’s Republic of Poland, where MP Antoni Bida resided, and in front of which masses of poor people gathered (according to the modified proverb “When in poverty, visit a Jew”). There were the offices fo “Orbis”, a branch of the PKO bank and as many as three Polish bookshops, each of which would have been considered the best in any Polish city, Warsaw included. After the Six-Day War in June 1967 both the embassy and Orbis vanished, and a year later, after the memo- rable events of March, new immigrants from Poland appeared in Allenby street. If a list of best-selling books had been published in those bookshops at the time, I have no doubt that beside the Israeli stories by Hłasko, the top places would have been taken by Tuwim for children, The rhyme market and, first of all,Polish Flowers. I remember the bookshop of Edmund Neustein in the underground passage at Allenby particularly well, where, between the shelves, you could still feel the spirit of Marek Hłasko, who had died a few months earlier.
