  • Annual Report 2019
Annual Report 2018-2019 This annual report is a celebration of Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio’s vision for the new evangelization. Since the heart of evangelization is to introduce others to the saving presence and power of the Lord Jesus, any pastoral vision that seeks to explain in greater detail the work of evangelization must begin with an opportunity for personal reflection. If we seek to revitalize our Church, to bring new life to our mission to teach and preach the Gospel, and bring others to greater faith, then we must ask some serious questions of ourselves. What does it really mean to me to seek new life and vigor in Christ? What is really being asked of me? What attitudes must I change in my life before I can become an effective agent of evangelization in my family, parish, and neighborhood? Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Ph.D., D.D., “Do Not Be Afraid” A Pastoral Vision for the New Evangelization, 2007. Cover Photos Courtesy of Gregory A. The Secretariat for Evangelization and Catechesis Annual Report for 2018-2019, prepared by the staff of the Secretariat, presents a sampling of BOLD evangelization and catechetical programs, processes, initiatives, and events in place to accompany those who are actively engaged in their faith as well as those seeking a relationship with God for the first time.

Creating Ripples of HopeHopeGiving Today Impacting Tomorrow 2009 Annual Report IS PLEASED TO HONOR THE Alive in Hope Foundation of the Diocese of Brooklyn for excellence in materials used to promote diocesan stewardship AWARDED FOR ITS Total Foundation Effort “God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well.” Romans 12.6-11 11 October 2009 Dallas, Texas Creating Ripples HopeHopeof In 1996 the first gift was made to the Alive in Hope Campaign; a historic event in the life of the Diocese of Brooklyn. That first expression of generosity begot another, and another, leading to the creation of the Alive in Hope Foundation. Eleven years later, $23 million has been distrib- uted in support of the Catholic community in Brooklyn and Queens. One act of love calls forth another, creating ripples of hope for generations to come. Giving Today, Impacting Tomorrow 1 DearDear Dear Friends in Christ, “Do not be afraid of Christ. He takes nothing away, and He gives you everything. When we give ourselves to Him, we receive a hundredfold in return.” Benedict XVI Rooted in deep faith, summoned by hope, and impelled by charity, we join together and sustain the commandment of love. It was clearly love for our Church and its future that led a group of visionaries and caring individuals to form the Alive in Hope Foundation eleven years ago. They recognized that creating a foundation that would gather gifts and grow them over the years would provide for the ministerial needs of our Church. In order to have a sense of the divine and the eternal in your life, you must be a hope-giver to others—not only by how you treat others in your interpersonal transactions but in the way you give your tangible gifts away.

  • Cuban American Bishops Express Solidarity, Call for Humanitarian Aid
Cuban American bishops express solidarity, call for humanitarian aid WASHINGTON (CNS) — Four Cuban American bishops called on the international community to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Cuba and expressed solidarity with them following protests that erupted on the island nation starting July 11. “We call on international governments and all charitable organizations to collaborate in assisting in this urgent humanitarian crisis for the sake of the suffering people of Cuba, especially the sick and the poor,” they wrote in a joint statement July 13. It was signed by four bishops who were born on the island or have Cuban heritage: Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez of Philadelphia; Auxiliary Bishop Manuel A. Cruz of Newark, New Jersey; Bishop Felipe J. Estevez of St. Augustine, Florida; and retired Auxiliary Bishop Octavio Cisneros of Brooklyn, New York. “We commend the care of Caritas Cubana, as it continues to mediate — with ever so limited resources — a response to the basic human needs of the people of the island, recognizing that the alleviation of suffering is a moral imperative,” they said in the letter. Despite the threat of COVID-19, which is ravaging the island, Cubans took to the streets of various major cities and towns to protest the lack of food and medicine. “In dramatic and courageous images that have been seen throughout the world, the people of Cuba went to the streets in massive demonstrations of solidarity, in towns, villages and cities on July 11 and 12,” the four U.S. bishops said. “Their motto ‘Patria y Vida‘ (‘Homeland and Life’) expressed their frustrations as they experience record cases of COVID-19, a lack of vaccines, adequate medical care and needed supplies — inhuman circumstances that add to the existing lack of food and essential human necessities,” their letter continued.
