One of those was an affirmation of the importance to continue connecting and meeting to exchange innovations, in whatever field we practice, to ensure the growth of our world. On behalf of the Conference Organizing Committee and Advisory Board, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the Eighteenth Annual International Pittsburgh Coal Conference being held in Newcastle, NSW, Australia, after a very successful 2000 conference in Pittsburgh. The 2001 Conference focuses on the theme “Coal’s International Future: the Technical Challenge,” covering a wide spectrum of important topics on coal technology and environmental issues including coal geosciences and resources, coal conversion, coal combustion, pre- and post-combustion products, non-fuel use of coal, greenhouse gas control, and CO2 sequestration. The Conference program includes more than 300 papers presented in 51 technical oral sessions and eleven poster sessions over three days. The Plenary Session, chaired by Mr. Robert A. Beck, Executive Director of the National Coal Council, Inc., will feature several keynote addresses by an international panel of coal industry experts. Speakers include: Dr. Robin Batterham, Chief Scientist, Australia; Mr. David A Cain, Chief Consultant – Energy, Rio Tinto Technology, Australia; Dr. James S. Falsetti, Senior VP of Texaco, USA; Dr. Guanghua Li, Vice Division Director, Department of Science and Technology and Environmental Protection, State Power Corporation of China, P.R.
