The taxonomy and distribution of Pacifi c Annonaceae are reviewed in light of recent changes in generic delimitations. A new species of the genus Monoon from the Solomon Archipelago is described, Monoon salomonicum I.M.Turner & Utteridge sp. nov., together with an apparently related new species from New Guinea, Monoon pachypetalum I.M.Turner & Utteridge sp. nov. The confi rmed presence of the genus in the Solomon Islands extends the generic range eastward beyond New Guinea. Two new species of Huberantha are described, Huberantha asymmetrica I.M.Turner & Utteridge sp. nov. and Huberantha whistleri I.M.Turner & Utteridge sp. nov., from the Solomon Islands and Samoa respectively. The pollination ecology and breeding system of the Sri Lankan endemic Xylopia championii (Annonaceae) are described in detail. The pollination ecology was investigated using a diverse range of approaches, including (1) observations of flower-level and population-level phenology, (2) assessments of floral visitors and effective pollinators, (3) monitoring of floral temperature in situ using a digital data logger, and (4) analysis of scent chemistry using solid-phase microextraction sampling and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry identifica- tion of volatiles. -
Plants of the Annonaceae Traditionally Used As Antimalarials: a Review1
315 PLANTS OF THE ANNONACEAE TRADITIONALLY USED AS ANTIMALARIALS: A REVIEW1 GINA FRAUSIN2 , RENATA BRAGA SOUZA LIMA3, ARI DE FREITAS HIDALGO4, PAUL MAAS5, ADRIAN MARTIN POHLIT6 ABSTRACT- Species of the Annonaceae family are used all over the tropics in traditional medicine in tropical regions for the treatment of malaria and other illnesses. Phytochemical studies of this family have revealed chemical components which could offer new alternatives for the treatment and control of malaria. Searches in scientific reference sites (SciFinder Scholar, Scielo, PubMed, ScienceDirect and ISI Web of Science) and a bibliographic literature search for species of Annonaceae used traditionally to treat malaria and fever were carried out. This family contains 2,100 species in 123 genera. We encountered 113 articles reporting medicinal use of one or more species of this family including 63 species in 27 genera with uses as antimalarials and febrifuges. Even though the same species of Annonaceae are used by diverse ethnic groups, different plant parts are often chosen for applications, and diverse methods of preparation and treatment are used. The ethanol extracts of Polyalthia debilis and Xylopia aromatica proved to be quite active against Plasmodium falciparum in vitro (median inhibition concentration, IC50 < 1.5 µg/mL). Intraperitoneal injection of Annickia chlorantha aqueous extracts (cited as Enantia chlorantha) cleared chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium yoelii nigeriensis from the blood of mice in a dose-dependant manner. More phytochemical profiles of Annonaceous species are required; especially information on the more commonly distributed antimalarial compounds in this family. ANNONACEAE DA RESERVA BIOLÓGICA DA REPRESA DO GRAMA, DESCOBERTO, MINAS GERAIS, BRASIL, COM UMA NOVA ESPÉCIE, UNONOPSIS BAUXITAE Adriana Quintella Lobão1, 3, Rafaela Campostrini Forzza1 & Renato de Mello-Silva 2 RESUMO (Annonaceae da Reserva Biológica da Represa do Grama, Descoberto, Minas Gerais, Brasil, com uma nova espécie, Unonopsis bauxitae) São apresentadas as espécies de Annonaceae da Reserva Biológica da Represa do Grama. A Reserva está localizada em Descoberto, Minas Gerais, e abrange uma área de 263,8 hectares de floresta estacional semidecidual. São encontrados cinco gêneros e sete espécies: Annona cacans, Guatteria nigrescens, G. sellowiana, Rollinia dolabripetala, Unonopsis bauxitae, Xylopia brasiliensis, X. sericea e a nova espécie Unonopsis bauxitae, aqui descrita. São apresentadas chave de identificação das espécies, descrições, ilustrações, e informações sobre floração, frutificação, distribuição geográfica e hábitats. ABSTRACT (Annonaceae of the Reserva Biológica da Represa do Grama, Descoberto, Minas Gerais, Brazil, with a new species, Unonopsis bauxitae) The Reserva Biológica da Represa do Grama is situated in Descoberto, Minas Gerais, and consists of 263.8 hectares of semideciduous forest. Chemical Composition and Biological Activities of the Essential Oils of Genus Xylopia L
Chemical composition and biological activities of the essential oils of genus Xylopia L. (Annonaceae). A review Xylopia L. includes approximately 180 species and is an important genus of the Natasa Mohd SHAKRI a Annonaceae family due to its production of secondary compounds. It comprises several Wan Mohd Nuzul Hakimi Wan SALLEH a* species that are native to the African region and can serve as valuable medicinal plants Nor Azah Mohamad ALI b thanks to their biological and pharmacological properties. In fact, the local populations often use it for different medicinal purposes, such as for malaria, cough, stomachache, rheumatism, and inflammation. The objective of this study was to carry out a review of a essential oils of the genus Xylopia and their biological activities. The data were collected Department of Chemistry, from the scientific electronic databases including SciFinder, Scopus, Elsevier, PubMed, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, and Google Scholar. A total of thirty-seven Xylopia species have been reported for their Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, essential oils and biological activities. It can be observed that the major components were Tanjong Malim, Perak, Malaysia germacrene D, bicyclogermacrene, (E)-caryophyllene, limonene, α-pinene, and β-pinene. As a result, considerable production losses are caused by these arthropods. Thus, in order to aid in the development of new products for the control of Tetranychus tumidus Banks and Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), the initial objective of this study was to select Annonaceae derived fractions that were soluble in dichloromethane and have acaricidal activity. Then, an exploratory analysis of the metabolite profile of the most successful fraction was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Among the dichloromethane soluble fractions derived from Annona cacans Warm., Annona coriacea Mart., Annona neolaurifolia H. Rainer, Annona sylvatica A.St.-Hil., Duguetia lanceolata A.St.-Hil., Guatteria australis A.St.-Hil., Xylopia brasiliensis Spreng., Xylopia emarginata Mart. and Xylopia sericea A.St.-Hil., only the fraction from D. lanceolata stem bark reduced the survival of T. tumidus females. E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT. Serpentine soils are those holding at least of 70% iron-magnesium compounds, which make life intolerable for many species. Although plant's adaptation to environmental toughness is widely studied in tropics, virtually nothing is known about Brazilian serpentine flora. Our aim was to bring up and characterize the serpentine flora in Bom Sucesso, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. We performed expeditions utilizing rapid survey sampling method to identify the arboreal compound in the area. Plants within circumference at breast high (CBH) up to 15,7 cm were included in our study. A specialist identified all the individuals to species level. We found 246 species located in 59 botanical families. Fabaceae, Myrtaceae and Melastomataceae were the most representative families in the area. Serpentine areas usually present a few species capable to survive to adverse conditions, contrasting the high number found in our study. -

The QF region has high biodiversity and is being highly impacted, mainly by mining activities. Aiming to organize the available floristic information and to support related research, this study presents the list of phanerogamic species of the ISP and the major vegetation types. This survey was carried out from October/1992 to July/2006, by monthly field trips. Besides authors´ personal collections, other records were assembled from herbarium databank. -
