Philadelphia, PA Binghamton, NY Reading, PA Overview Although we are considered the fourth tier of professional soccer in the United States our league is very competitive. Liverpool from the English Premier League has a team playing out of Plano, Texas and two MLS teams have their reserve squads entered into the competition. Not only do we have the ambition to grow into a major professional soccer team for Hershey, We can earn the right to compete with the MLS through our venue. Since its inception our league has continually placed one team actively under its banner into the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup competition. The tournament is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and is currently open to all United States Soccer Federation affiliated teams, from amateur adult club teams to the professional clubs of Major League Soccer. Though the showing of the NPSL in US Open Cup play was typically only one or two teams in its first six years, the recent success of the NPSL in USASA qualifying has encouraged a movement by the soccer Federation to give guaranteed automatic berths of our teams to the tournament each year. This means that if we win our division, we will have the chance, in knockout competition, to host a Major League Soccer Team. The overall U.S. Open Cup champion in 2012 earned a total of $250,000 (up from $100,000 in recent years) in prize money. The tournament runner-up receive $60,000 (up from $50,000) and the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will win $15,000 (up from $10,000). THE DEFENDING OPEN CUP CHAMPIONS ARE SPORTING KANSAS CITY, WHO BEAT THE SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC 1-1 ON PENALTY KICKS 2012. Marketing Points We are 100 percent connected and affiliated to Hershey through the soccer community. The owner and president of Hershey FC is the current hired coaching director of the Hershey Soccer Club. → Currently there are more than 600 kids in the Hershey Soccer program → HersheySoccer.com contains more than 2400 registered members that keep up and check in with the events taking place Financially, our parents are committed to the Hershey Soccer club, therefore our vision is to build upon the program so that our youth players can be developed into viable players for our team. We are rooted into the Hershey community and we plan to continue to grow that way. Our home field is at Hershey High School and we have already opened the door to stand outs from the high school to participate on our team. We want the high school involved and will be fielding at least one high school player each year. We hope to have its alumni attend our matches and through the concessions we will be putting money into its booster clubs. • Transportation Trips, Excursions, Special Journeys, Outings, Tours, and Milestones In, To, from Or Through New Jersey
TRANSPORTATION TRIPS, EXCURSIONS, SPECIAL JOURNEYS, OUTINGS, TOURS, AND MILESTONES IN, TO, FROM OR THROUGH NEW JERSEY Bill McKelvey, Editor, Updated to Mon., Mar. 8, 2021 INTRODUCTION This is a reference work which we hope will be useful to historians and researchers. For those researchers wanting to do a deeper dive into the history of a particular event or series of events, copious resources are given for most of the fantrips, excursions, special moves, etc. in this compilation. You may find it much easier to search for the RR, event, city, etc. you are interested in than to read the entire document. We also think it will provide interesting, educational, and sometimes entertaining reading. Perhaps it will give ideas to future fantrip or excursion leaders for trips which may still be possible. In any such work like this there is always the question of what to include or exclude or where to draw the line. Our first thought was to limit this work to railfan excursions, but that soon got broadened to include rail specials for the general public and officials, special moves, trolley trips, bus outings, waterway and canal journeys, etc. The focus has been on such trips which operated within NJ; from NJ; into NJ from other states; or, passed through NJ. We have excluded regularly scheduled tourist type rides, automobile journeys, air trips, amusement park rides, etc. NOTE: Since many of the following items were taken from promotional literature we can not guarantee that each and every trip was actually operated. Early on the railways explored and promoted special journeys for the public as a way to improve their bottom line.
