News Round-Up - Germany FRENCH RAIDER LANDS HISTORIC DRESDEN RACE The English import BRIAN RYAN, a winner for trainer Ruth Carr at Newcastle in March last year, but now trained in France by Italian-born trainer Andrea Marcialis, won the Group 3 Grosser Preis der Landeshauptstadt Dresden on Sunday, the first ever Group race to be held at Dresden racecourse. Already a winner of four races this year, Brian Ryan, sent off a 13.7-1 chance on the local Tote, held off the challenge of Waldpfad by a neck, with another French raider, Broderie, representing Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation, a further 1¾ lengths back in third. However, Brian Ryan’s victory owed much to an inspired ride from jockey Max Pecheur. Currently leading the German Jockey’s championship with 37 victories, Pecheur kept the four year old Finjaan gelding away from the near side rails in the early stages of the race, electing to race alone in the centre of the course, a move which was to ultimately prove decisive. With Thursday being a bank holiday in southern Germany due to Fronleichnam (Corpus Christi), a decent turnout of spectators descended on the course to enjoy the raceday, which, after a round of the Junior Cup for young riders aboard a mix of retired racehorses and half-breeds, got under way when the Klein-trained FLIGHT TO HONGKONG, second at Mannheim over 1900 metres in April handled the step up in trip to 2500 metres when holding off the Henk Grewe-trained Burning Rose by a neck in the Preis des Busenbender Dental Studios conditions race, In the richest race of the day, the 7,000 Euro Preis der m:con GmbH class 3 Handicap, Klein saddled the first two home when BERGPFAD led home stablemate Smentana, a feat the trainer repeated in the next race when WÜSTENLADY proved her victory over Thursday’s course and distance back in April was no fluke when winning another class 3 handicap, the Engelhorn Sports- Rennen, with another Klein runner, Exclusive Potion, three lengths back in second. The trainer completed his four timer when the Equiano filly MASHIANA landed the Preis der Wall GmbH conditions race, with the odds on favourite Kauttio, a rare runner at Mannheim for top trainer Andreas Wöhler, back in third. News Round-Up - Germany VETERAN POTEMKIN SET FOR WIRTSCHAFT WIN Se ven runners are set to line up in the big race in Germany this weekend, the Group 3 Grosser Preis der Wirtschaft at Dortmund on Sunday. The first two home from last year’s corresponding race, DEGAS and PALACE PRINCE, do battle again, however both have been somewhat disappointing since. Havin g been well beaten in two races at Meydan in Dubai earlier in the year Degas looked to be returning to form when third in a Group 3 race at Dortmund in April. However, Degas was bitterly disappointing last time out when last of nine in last month ’s Badener Meile at Baden-Baden. Palace Prince, who finished just behind Degas in Dortmund when coming home fourth, reversed the form in the Badener Meile when finish fifth. However, like Degas, Place Prince had a rather fruitless winter, finishing unplaced in three races at the winter festival at Cagnes-sur-Mer. KRONPRINZ , sixth in the Badener Meile, is yet another runner who raced overseas in th e winter, finishing fifth in two of his three races in Meydan before finishing fourth in the Group 3 Abu Dhabi Championship. Eighth in the Badener Meile was MELODINO, who won a small race on Dortmund’s all weather surface back in December, but who wi ll probably find this task beyond him. Out of all the horses that run on Sunday, the best place in the Badener Meile was VOLFANGO, who once again travels over to Germany from the stables of trainer Fabrice Vermuelen, based at Chantilly in France. Winner of the Listed Prix Saonois at Cagnes sur Mer back in February (PALACE PRINCE back in eleventh), Volfango, who wasn’t beaten too far by some very useful types when fifth in the Group 2 Prix d’ Harcourt at Longchamp in April, looks set to be there or thereabouts here. However, the eight year old POTEMKIN, who makes his seasonal debut here, has won first time out in three of the last four seasons, including when winning this very race back in 2016. A regular performer at Group level over the last couple of years which saw victories in one of Italy’s biggest races, the Group 1 Premio Roma and the Group 2 Prix Dollar at Chantilly, Potemkin, who represents the powerful trainer / jockey combination of Andres Wöhler and Eddie Pedroza, won three of his last races of last year including a Group 3 contest at Baden-Baden, and looks to be the one to beat here. The field is completed by FOLIE DE LOUISE, the only mare in the race. Fifth last time out at Dortmund when having to concede lumps of weight all round in a Listed contest, Folie de Louise, a Listed winner at Saint Cloud in November, gets weight from all her rivals here, and could go well here. PREDICTION: POTEMKIN - VOLFANGO - FOLIE DE LOUISE News Round-Up - Europe SWEDEN: NATIONAL GLORY FOR GERMAN RAIDER SERIENLOHN SERIENLOHN, trained in Bremen by Pavel Vovcenko, became the eighth German- trained winner of the Swedish Grand National since 2009 when winning this year’s renewal of Scandinavia’s biggest jumps race, sponsored this year by G Construct, at Strömsholm on Saturday. Winner of a Strasbourg steeplechase in March before finishing sixth in a hurdle race at Auteuil last time out, Serienlohn, who narrowly avoided being brought down when the favourite Ajas fell four fences from home, still had three horses in front of his as the field turned for home with just one to jump. However, under an excellent ride from Czech jockey Jan Faltejsek, the nine year old Lomitas gelding landed the 280,000 SEK (approx.26,180 EUR) contest by two lengths from the Anders Herlin-trained Truckers Glory, who became the first home winner of the race since 2010 when winning last year’s renewal. German raider Wutzelmann, whose trainer Anna Schleusner-Fruhriep won the Swedish Grand National with Ländler back in 2015, was third. Saturday’s victory completed a big race double for trainer Vovcenko and jockey Faltejsek , who earlier in the day won the Easyfix Swedish Champion Hurdle with LEIERSPIELERIN, who prevailed by the tightest of short head margins against the Norwegian-trained Somerville.
